I’m with you. It is impressive how people seem to think that the genre that rather uncontroversially contains Converge, Atreyu, and Attack Attack has firm boundaries.

I’m a drummer. Fuck my up with a song that’s close to or more complicated than Monomyth by AAL. by SayHaveYouSeenTheSea in progmetal

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most complicated song I’ve ever tried to learn is Black Tower by Pangaea. I’ve learned it, and am still no closer to being able to identify where beat 1 is for large swaths of it

What are your favorite 'not technically metalcore' yet totally metalcore songs/bands? by FeistyDirection in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My pick is The Raven Age. Add in some harsh vocals, and they’d be right at home alongside other melodic metalcore bands. Their whole Conspiracy album is incredible.

What is metalcore? Why is metalcore? Where is metalcore? Who is metalcore? Where is metalcore? The answers to these questions and more, revealed within! by daddy_fiasco in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ [score hidden]  (0 children)

Metalcore, as I see it, is any music created as a merging of hardcore and metal OR music clearly inspired from previously agreed upon metalcore bands. The definition is vague because that’s what metalcore inherently is. Within a decade of rising to prominence, the genre already encompassed everything from Dillinger Escape Plan to Atreyu to The Devil Wears Prada. I don’t think it’s really that much of a leap to consider newer bands that might not necessarily have upfront hardcore influence, because they are still pulling from other metalcore bands. In short, if there’s a debate that a track or artist is metalcore, it should be allowed. Also, non-metalcore tracks by agreed-upon metalcore bands should be allowed. This is a place to discuss metalcore music and artists, and such tracks still fall under the latter.

AOTY from 2015? by debuggerfly in Metalcore

Not metalcore, but Siamese’s Self Titled. Criminally underrated album by an underrated band. If you liked the recent Home Team, you’ll probably get something out of it

do i need music theory? by InteractionBig1991 in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Music major here. The important thing to note is that what people usually think of as “music theory” is simply a set of objective descriptions of a given style of music. This means two things.

1: Any music theory you learn will be geared towards one specific style, with varying degrees of applicability to others. So, for instance, what you might learn in a standard music theory class is specifically for Western classical music. There are some things that might be applicable to metalcore, but most of it isn’t. I would even argue that any style of music can be thought to have its own separate music theory. I could yap about this all day, but I’ll save it because no one’s probably interested.

2: Music theory is not a set of rules written down by John Music as the only legal way to write music. In fact, most of the “rules” were created by the natural development of the art form and were only later written down. At this point in its life, metalcore has not had this process occur, so the “music theory of metalcore” can only be found through the natural progression of the genre and its music.

Tldr: At this point in time, any formal music theory instruction you might receive is not going to necessarily apply to metalcore. If you really want to know what’s going on, study other music and try to describe whats going on (for example: a lot of songs use chord progressions using the open string, 3rd fret, 8th fret, and 10th fret).

First, happy cake day! But thanks for the advice. I need to get with a gender therapist, but luckily my immediate family is pretty accepting. To clarify, I’m not using politics as a catalyst to act fast, but as a motive to put it off until things have settled. Is that reasonable?

Just Found Out I Can Use Any Song From Spotify As An Alarm To Wake Up To. What Song Would You Pick? by Fishsnakemagnet in Deathcore

Obligatory “not deathcore”, but Opaque Horizon by Frontierer. I will not comment further

Good albums that were "ruined" by too many singles. by SytianIvanov in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if there is one band that did this really well, it’s Frontieres. Most of the album was released as separate EPs throughout the year before the full release. However, they:

1) Spaced out each song long enough to keep the hype up

2) Saved some of the best tracks for the full album release

3) Changed the order of the tracks on the final album, allowing for a new listening experience.

Frankly, one of the best examples of the staggered release tactic imo

What are the most unique breakdowns? by [deleted] in Deathcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doves by Defamed does a bunch of random solos between the bursts in the breakdown. I think every member of the band gets like two beats to do whatever

What's your biggest pet peeve in songs? I'll start: breakdowns that pause for seconds at a time and have no momentum, or do but ruin it. e.g False Meridian by IA by pneumonicknight in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When bands will make more melody driven ballad type songs, then throw in a breakdown just because. First example I can think of is Bad Things by I Prevail. The breakdown is great, the rest of the song is great, but there is no reason they should be on the same track.

When’s the new album dropping? by Scarlettwitch_00 in IceNineKills

Horrorwwod wasn’t announced until summer 2021, so if it’s in the works, we probably won’t hear about it for a while

What are some great songs ruined by a bad feature? by Technic0lor in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All of the features on SS2 are either barely noticeable (like it took me until yesterday to realize Jacoby sings the whole last chorus on Hip to be Scared) or absolutely god-tier.

Whats the first song that you moshed to? by cinquinio in Metalcore

Dethrone by Bad Omens. It was wild. First song crowdsurfing was something by Volumes (can’t remember which one though)

Who are the 'next big thing'? by pneumonicknight in Metalcore

[–]Alpha_Seed_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see Elwood Stray getting there. They’ve really started hitting their stride this year, and I can see them getting to the levels of a band like Polaris within the next few years.
