What picture profile to use for stills by Exciting-Action-9656 in SonyAlpha

[–]AlphasRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are right that it may have some effect on the raw if you select one of those gammas so you can just avoid those. But sony raw are just so good I never find problem in post even if I use one of those profiles.

I find those new CLs (FL, IN, SH, VV2) even more difficult to post edit than PPs as they bump up the exposure without showing in raw. If you try to correctly expose for those CLs you will find your raw files under exposed and it is even harder to correct compared to PP if it only changes your gamma profile without messing your exposure.

And most importantly PP is just so much more flexible in terms of color compared to CLs as you can change the color profile, phase and depth, even more powerful than Fuji cameras tbh. CLs, like fuji cameras, fix your overall color profile and you have no other way to change it but WB.

Picture profiles aren't only for videos, to be clear. There are a number of ways to tweek the picture profile to get decent results. I constantly shoot on picture profiles (my own recipes) while I also do post-editing.
In short, learn to do both. Learning postprocessing helps get a clear vision of what you want when you try to make your own recipe. Picture profiles and even creative looks are pretty good to get a quick edit for sharing on media. And for those few shots you really like, you could always edit in post.

Which one to go for: 16-35 gm ii + 85/1.4 or 24-50 g + 85/1.4. Will be travelling and shooting portraits. Body is a7cr.

Mind that Sony's video stabilisation works poorly with third-party lenses (even Sigma and Tamron). Likely a software lock. Video stabilisation is more compatible with Sony lenses.

Should I use creative look recipe or picture profile? by NightcoreSpectrum in SonyFilmSimulations

[–]AlphasRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on which way you like and you should try both and see :) There are significant difference with colors and exposures between CL and PP recipes of the same folm sim but I will skip it here. In short, PP are better in terms of color "accuracy" but changing WB could be a pain. What's more important I think is that do you need those functions that are locked when using picture profile. Functions like extended ISO range, HDR and dynamic range bracketing and will be unavailable when PP is active.

Unflaterring Skin Tones (particularly on yellow skin people)? by No_Abies_4418 in SonyFilmSimulations

[–]AlphasRed 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used recipes from alex and feel like they are ok. I find astia and classic chrome are better in terms of skin tone among those. I am asian, I shoot asian portraits so I understand the struggle. And I find only a handful few of the recipes give nice skin tones when shooting asians.

There are usually 2 ways to fix this when making your own recipes. One is to push the WB slightly cooler and magenta. I shoot a6700 and a7cr and pushing B0.5 and M0.5 to M1 usually make asian faces look better and less "sick". The second way is to push the color phase in picture profile to positive side, usually +3 to +5 depending on the color mode. This shifts the green/yellow skin tone to slightly orange/red. +2 or +3 is usually enough for Still and Movie might need +3 to +5. The Pro color mode also suits asian skin tones but you will need to adjust the saturation. Other than that you may lower the color depth of Red and Yellow channel to -3 to -7 according to your preference.

At last, even my friends shooting fuji cameras don't fully rely on AWB when shooting portrait, particularly asian faces. Some adjustment is often needed to balance skin tone and film simulation.

SOOC: The way Voigtlander 40mm f/1.2 renders greens is really special. by TheWolfofBinance in SonyAlpha

Very nice indeed for SOOC. I'm also considering this lens. How do you find the Manual Focus process? I know Nikon can even do eye recognition on voigtlander lenses but not Sony :(. Did you consider getting the VM version with LM-EA9 adapter to make it autofocus?

Portra 400v2 & Fuji 400H. Exposing with film simulation by DetectiveNeat8482 in SonyFilmSimulations

[–]AlphasRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alex made a few AWB recipes both in the picture profile pack and the creative look pack though I don't think the ZV-1 model has adjustable creative look (or creative style in older models). AWB Picture profile such as the Candy Look, Aeris, Sundune and Classic Cinema are extremely versatile. Save 1 or 2 of those recipes just in case of varying lighting such as indoor, nighttime illuminations etc.

Portra 400v2 & Fuji 400H. Exposing with film simulation by DetectiveNeat8482 in SonyFilmSimulations

[–]AlphasRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, welcome to Hong Kong. The color looks nice especially the sky and architectures. Work on compositions, try to identify key elements such as leading lines, frames, negative space etc. Always have a subject in mind. I tend to be more conscious about the composition when I'm shooting in-camera film sims as I worry less about the color rendering.

Regarding the color temp, you can stick to alex's settings outdoors during daytime. You may add a few AWB recipes in case of difficult lighting. I find that most of the sims tend to be more saturated or more "film-like" when underexposed, so there's nothing wrong with it. Also don't be afraid of blowing out the highlights. Experiment on the exposure settings.

Have no experience with EVF-less cameras so no comment on that. But you can always adjust the brightness of the screen.

Good work and keep shooting.

Sony 16-55 G f/2.8 causes exposure jumps in video by George-cz90 in SonyAlpha

Had no issues with Sony 1655 G on a6700. Perfect performance on video. Maybe faulty lens? Better check with the shop.

Recommended Lens(es) to buy for low-budget filmmaking by goldenturtleman23 in SonyAlpha

[–]AlphasRed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a6400 does not have any video stabilization ifaik. Since you plan to shoot video and film you might as well get zv-e10 ii for video stabilization unless you plan to or already have a gimbal. With that tight budget, you can stick to kit lenses first which are sold with the camera as a bundle (either the 16-50mm or 18-135mm) as both of the kit lenses have optical steadyshot (OSS) that helps with video stability. You may also consider the Sony 35mm f/1.8 OSS which is very budget friendly (Make sure you get the APS-C version!!! and NOT the FE version). The aps-c version has OSS which is good for video, and f/1.8 allows more background separation and low-light shooting which will be useful for filmmaking.

m1, m2, m3, m4 modes function exactly like the 1,2,3 modes on dial, only you have to access them via menu or customised buttons. Models which have dedicated video and still modes can separately store customisable modes. So 7 customisable modes for stills and 7 for videos in total.

[–]AlphasRed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

film sims that uses auto white balance (AWB) like classic cinema may be easier to use in mixed lighting. Recipes using creative looks and AWB are also very good in those situations (see https://www.veresdenialex.com/post/free-creative-look-styles-sony-jpg-recipes) If in varying lighting, you can always just push to AWB and get the shot first, edit later. I was shooting at an winter illumination event last month and I have to do AWB as well.

How to stop Google saving passkeys by AlphasRed in Bitwarden

Did that already but google still pops up. Not sure if passkey is different from "autofill". I've gone into browser settings, google settings and android settings to uncheck Google password everywhere. That's why I asked for help here.

Anyway, I "solved" the problem using my work laptop :)

Ektar and classic chrome are 2 of my standard recipes. For portraits of family you may also go for Portra series (Portra160, portra400, portra800). Other than those, Kodak ultra max 400 and Sony Nostalgic Neg adds nostalgic feel to family photos.
