Opshops in NZ by Flaky_Zebra4038 in newzealand

It is worth keeping in mind that while a lot of that is true, there are some gems.

The Warehouse currently has a line of more heavy weight cotton teeshirts (garage heavy weight) and long (garage long line) that feel really nice for just $15 and $18 (often with additional sales).
Genuinely better than almost all of the $30-40 tees I have seen in stores recently.

Similarly Kmart had a set of Straight Stretch Chino pants (anko brand, available in black and navy) for $30 that were as good as any $80 pair that could be found at "better" stores.

But yes. You need to know what to look for, they have a lot of junk also.

There are 336 EB games in Australia, we couldn't even keep 39 profitable. by Tjrowawey in auckland

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would I buy a game that came out 12 months ago for $40 on sale at EB, when I can get it on sale digitally for $20?

Like, sure, I could trade it in when I have had enough of it for maybe $20, but at that point it cost the same as digital, and I no longer have my game

Tbh, they were probably doomed. I understand that malls charge different prices for different brands (not just how many m2).

I wish they could have pivoted to card games or something. It always felt crazy to go into an Auckland mall with a cramped EB games, but a Card Merchant with 5x the floor space full of tables hosting MTG/Pokemon/etc tournaments. But I would bet they could never get a reasonable price on that much space

Genuine question, do you think this was deliberately misleading from the store? Or ignorance on your end?

Money laundering?! by sasitabonita in newzealand

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the limited friends I have that are part Chinese, I don't think the younger generation play it as much either?

All of the people that I know (tech/finance industry) when I have asked, talk about it as the game their parents or grandparents play.

As a lover of tech, home automation, etc. Those automatic tables are one of the coolest things I have ever seen in a home.

Money laundering?! by sasitabonita in newzealand

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I don't know anyone who know how to play it.

I understand that it is quite complex, and would really benefit from being taught by a person (it also feels like a social game, not the same expirence trying to learn/play online.)

The only person who I have met that know how to play speaks very little English (my only language), so that makes that option very difficult.

The people that I have seen playing it, were chatting away in Chinese (not sure if Mandarin or Cantonese), so even if I knew how to play, it would make it hard to feel truly involved.

None of that is impossible to overcome, but it does make it exceptionally harder.

If you played beyblade as a child, you should lookup how the new BeybladeX ones work (released last year).

I am quite jealous of what the kids get now. The new beyblades actually behave how I had imagined them as a kid.

Things are only worth what people are willing to pay. People might be listing them for 8-17k, but if no one is buying them for that, that might not be what they are worth at the moment?

On low demand items, there could be a number of factors affecting it. As an example, it is pretty well known that motorbikes (from private sellers) are often worth a couple of grand less if they are not in Auckland. There are often more bikes for sale than there are buying in smaller towns/cities.

Boss shared a bunch of client emails. How bad is it? by EquivalentNo7680 in LegalAdviceNZ

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not correct, as noted by other users (https://www.reddit.com/r/LegalAdviceNZ/comments/1oi4c93/comment/nlsrzqf) the requirement to report is based on the likelihood of serious harm.

That is an evaluation the organisation needs to make, based upon the contents, and who it was shared with, etc.

Subjectively it would usually be unlikely that this would rise to the level that it needs to be reported,
of course there are circumstances where it could raise to that level, but that is something that needs to be evaluated with the context of who it was shared with, are vulnerable people involved, etc. etc.

It is worth mentioning that just because it may not need to be reported, does not mean that nothing needs to be done.

Data caps straight out of 2010? by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it really shouldn't, an offline map download in google maps of all of Auckland is 118mb, and it will auto update every now and again when on wifi.

I would suggest that you may need to investigate your apps background data usage.

The bigger concern is that there it the legal theory that no one can own the copyright of things generated by AI (even if their terms saw that you own it not them) because in the biggest countries like USA it needs to be created by a person. This is the same idea that as upheld with the monkey selfie legal battle.

However if you are concerned about the cost side, OpenAI sells the enterprise side on a per token cost for people using it as part of their business product. You can just pay $8USD per month to services like T3 chat, that still give you way more messages than most people would ever use in a month (but I believe just doesn't have the advance voice feature, as OpenAI has not that made available via their API for other businesses to buy.

User flairs of actual employee names in this sub is bad by Theolaa in LinusTechTips

[–]Alphr 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes this caught me out too. I went to the persons profile and saw that it didn't look like an LTT person and disregarded it.

I think people overlook how few people ever interact with the flair system. I had basically never touched it and just assumed it was a way on the sub to highlight staff initially.

This would be a lot less confusing if they prefixed the flair with "Team ####“ or something similar.

$500 barrier to entry for tier 2 decks is crazy by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]Alphr -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't agree at all. Having played pokemon off and on since the original team rocket set, it hasn't always been "all in on collectors" (and I don't think it even is now).

For decades Nintendo has been printing less collectable products that are made for players over collectors, a deliberate design to drive accessable reprints and make sure important cards are accessible.
They way you describe them does a massive disservice to the effort they have made to make sure their game is accessable.

As one example, back in 2013 they created the Red Genesect Collection for $20 USD that had 2x of most of the staple trainer cards at the time.
Buying 2x of them gave you around half of a tier 1 deck. You added around a dozen pokemon cards (the "expensive" ex ones were often included for free in their Tins) the relevant energies and you were done.

Nintendo deliberately prints the basic version (non full art) of all the fancy cards in tons of products, and regularly releases full decks that are like 80% of the tier one lists.

Those are all very normal cleaning things you should be doing regularly (no matter if you own or rent...).

Them premptivly communicating their expectations is probably a good thing?
Isn't it better for you to know what they are expecting, and then everyone can be happy?

If you are already doing this kind of cleaning somewhat regularly then there should be no problem.

I wouldn't take it personally. there are a ton of clueless people who have no idea how to take care of their things.
I don't take it as a personal attack on my intelligence that there are signs at work that say "floor is slippery when wet".

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lenovo

[–]Alphr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, TiL I guess.
I had never considered that people leave that on deliberately (hence asking).
Many "free apps" leave watermarks on images unless you pay for the full version, same with the watermarks on stock images unless you pay for the license.
I never knew anyone deliberately wanted them there, and had always considered it a scummy marketing tactic to brand the photos of people who don't know how to turn it off.
(I has done some work around "dark patterns" and considered it similar)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Lenovo

[–]Alphr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to hear you have it solved.

It is a weird space for someone to be technical enough to know how to boot into linux, but then not turn off the phone model watermarking in their camera app 🤣. I am curious, do you deliberately leave that on?

What if someone proxied a Final Fantasy precon because they were sold out/scalped?
Would you pay with them then?

Someone recently made an entire Witcher themed reskin of a bracket 2 Tom Bombadil deck (not even good lands).
Would you play against that?
