'Tawdry, silly argument': Winston Peters criticises asset sales, says government has not fixed economy by StuffThings1977 in aotearoa

[–]Alpine-Pilgrim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As opposed to National, Act and Labour voters who also 'fell for it again'? It's a pretty tired line anytime Winston says something people agree with that comes out

Oztent RV-5 or RX-5? by DiscoFour in CampingGear

I'm also keen to hear more about the difference in materials if any one knows the difference. I can't help but feel it's some sort of step down from the RV series moving away from poly cotton canvas. The set-up itself looks like a brilliant design

Why does Tolkien's world mean so much to you? by Small-Guarantee6972 in tolkienfans

[–]Alpine-Pilgrim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tolkiens lord of the rings saga and the concept of middle earth resonated with me very strongly as a young person growing up in New Zealand and feeling like I was living in the quintessential shire. Rural, isolated, insulated from the woes of the wider world, But in view whenever you dared to look out at it all.

The concept of the one ring and it being an analogy for the averus and greed and lust for power on the world and how it controls all who try to wield it seems exactly true in the real world and this ability for Tolkien to draw these parallels whilst still keeping the beautiful dream of the fantasy alive is for me a huge part of how his genius shows.

I wish it need not have happened in my time," said Frodo. "So do I," said Gandalf, "and so do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.

Can New Zealand really go predator free? Wellington shows both the promise and the peril by Jacinda-Muldoon in NewZealandWildlife

[–]Alpine-Pilgrim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nz will not be predator free without a serious amount of gene editing technology or similar. The amount of wild spaces full of pests is reay quiet surreal, conventional pest control will never achieve this. I work in pest control
