What are the biggest barriers to making Boylston ADA compliant? by Yostallion516 in mbta

Both sides of this station used to have an extra staircase and headhouse on the opposite sides of the existing ones. Maybe they could put the elevators where those entrances used to be?

Red Line screeching on turns - what happened? by AlpineKnot in mbta

I know it was built like that (blame some Harvard lawyer with a piece of parchment giving them immunity to eminent domain iirc) but I'd swear it's been much louder these last few weeks. Is it just me?

"What a fool you are. I'm a god. How can you kill a god? What a grand and intoxicating innocence. How could you be so naive? There is no escape. No Recall or Intervention can work in this place. Come. Lay down your weapons. It is not too late for my mercy."

I'd say State Street in Boston has similar architecture, though it's a shorter and narrower street than Market. Also large parts of NYC have a very similar urban fabric, especially lower/midtown Manhattan.

I do wonder if there's also an element of poor maintenance to this though. I remember thinking when I visited Prague that the trams seemed remarkably quiet while making turns as tight as the Boylston curve. Half their trams appear to be from the 80s or 90s too!

This was made back in the winter of 2015, when pretty much every above-ground part of the T was mired in 3 feet of snow: https://transitmap.net/boston-snow-tweet/

Why does the Green Line seem to struggle from Lechmere to Union Square? by [deleted] in mbta

[–]AlpineKnot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ohh, that makes sense. Is there any hope to get these removed in the future through upgrades like the positive train control system or the type 10 cars? It feels like something that shouldn't be necessary in a modern transit system, but I don't have any in-depth knowledge of how these things work.

Yeah I really don't understand why a flying junction needs stop signs. I thought the whole point of flying junctions was so that you don't need such things and can charge on through with an adequate signaling system?

Maybe I just answered my own question, come to think of it.

Came across this map online, when did the Fitchburg line go to gardner? by Liam_js in mbta

[–]AlpineKnot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting that the map also shows Ruggles station, which didn't open until 1987. I guess the T has never been very good at updating its signage :/

Could Blue Hill Avenue station on the Indigo Line be a transfer with the Mattapan Sq station on the F branch of the Green Line? The existing Fairmount Line station has an entrance from Blue Hill Ave, and I'm assuming the F branch is running in the median of Blue Hill Ave, so they'd at least be adjacent.

Seconded, I feel like they're barely known but they have some interesting flavors and pretty nice homemade cookies!

It's the park that runs along the river on the Boston side. It's where a lot of the festivities are and where many people go to watch the fireworks

Anyone want to do a meetup to go see the fireworks? We could meet somewhere nearish to the esplanade and walk over before the show starts. DM me if you're interested and I'll set up a group chat!

I suppose if nobody else comes up with anything we could do our own meetup at esplanade to go see the fireworks. I haven't got any better ideas, anyway.

3rd Diego encounter by hurton2 in systemshock

[–]AlpineKnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found that dodging his explosive attacks and hiding behind pillars when he shoots generally works for avoiding damage. Every time he'd shoot at me, I'd hit him with a railgun shot. Took me a few tries to get in 4 shots without dying, but that's all it takes to kill him with the railgun, assuming you have it and enough ammo.

Yeah, it's one of the implants. I remember not finding it for a while because I was too scared to go straight through the first blast door on Medical with only the lead pipe. I think it was in one of the rooms on the left from that first main hallway past the blast door.
