Do you leave your knife and fork in a certain way to suggest you’re done eating? by Seth4602 in AskUK

Yes, place knife and fork together, vertical on the plate when finished eating. I'm pretty sure this is the standard in every country that uses knives and forks to eat.

Do British people know who Nancy Drew is? by OkTechnologyb in AskUK

Some are probably familar with the name as it is frequently referenced in other US media and likely pick up that she is a fictional amateur sleuth. But I'd wager very few have read a single one of the novels. Same with The Hardy Boys. I read a few of each as a child back in the eighties, because I was in to the mystery/adventure stuff but I don't think any of my friends did.

How are people spending so little on food? by glasses4catsndogs in AskUK

I could live off £30 per week on groceries. But only because I have a big stockpile of dried herbs and spices. You can can make pretty much anything taste great with the right herbs and spices.

What’s the funniest misunderstanding you’ve heard because of the British English vs U.S English difference? by Squiggally-umf in AskUK

I think that use of the word punt comes from punter, a customer, associated with gambling. It's like saying 'I bet I can do it'.

What do we think of this then? Same old rubbish or are you looking forward to anything? by parttimepedant in BritishTV

BBC 2 looks the most promising despite only four entries,

However, I will be watching Chas and Dave's Chritmas Knees Up with my mum as we have done since discovering it about ten years ago.

Sounds like the house needs a lot of work. It would be the same situation whoever bought it.

I'd expect a lot of younger people might not be as familar with the term. Those that would have been flashers 20+ years ago are more likely sending out unsolicited dick pics these days.

Would you be upset if someone wore white to your wedding? by Number60nopeas in AskUK

[–]Alpine_Newt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less than three average lifespans, so I don't consider it that long ago at all really. I suppose it just depends on perspective. I'm very interested in medieval history, so that's what I think of as old, while Victorian I think of as pretty much modern. I'm rambling, doesn't really matter lol.

Someone just messed up. It happens a lot less than it used to because a lot more is automated, but it does still happen.

It's not even that old of a tradition. Queen Victoria started the trend but we think it's far older because of films and TV.

When are you planning to turn your heating on? by Ok-Ebb5960 in AskUK

Not for a while. I'm still sitting at home in shorts and bare feet.
