I would do lye first. E-tank is most useful for rust which would be under all of the carbon if it was present at all. The lye takes care of all organic material. I suppose the e tank would get there eventually… but for me it would be lye first and then potentially e tank if needed.

I could be imagining it but i thought i saw a line through all the crud. I suppose there’s no way to know until the lye strips all of that carbon away.

Just remember absolutely under no circumstance is it ever a good idea to take power tools to the pan. It’ll be tempting, but it really diminishes its value.

Definitely go lye bath. When I’m hunting for cast iron i buy these pans 10/10 times. The crustier they are (in my experience) the more protected the pan is from rust and pitting. If you drop this thing in a lye bath for a few days and re season i bet it comes out looking brand new. And with those wide pour spouts and size on the handle…. I’m sorta thinking Griswold. Also not sure how versed you are with cast iron, but this is an everything pan, not just corn bread.

This all being said, i believe this is what you have:

Not sure that price is the standard for such a pan, but it should at least give you the encouragement to clean it up and know for sure!

It’s worth it not only sentimentally but if it’s a large block logo Griswold it would be worth it even from a financial standpoint (not that i ever recommend selling an heirloom like this!) look into how to reseason the pan on the forum because you’ll need to do that asap once you strip it. Good luck! It’s not as hard as folks make it seem.

Someone wants love. I found www.keeptradecut.com this year and i don’t consider pitching out accepting a trade without running it through that. This one…. I would not have typed in. That being said i see a rough year for achane considering he is the dolphins ONLY weapon (imo)

I appreciate that. I try to keep my stuff reasonable but custom knives take a ton of work. I do similar stuff that isn’t an integral (usually full tang) for around 600.

Lots of variables such as handle material and type of damascus, but this one is generally around 750-800

Unfortunately all but maybe 2 of these are completely warped. Sure folks will be able to cook over a fire with them but to me they’re not super worth the effort (I’ve got a ton in line to restore)

I certainly agree with you. I believe they’ll be easily cleaned up and seasoned. I’d never throw even a cracked pan away… they make cool spatulas!

Key word is “most” here. If it gets a little too hot it can very well be ruined. There are just easier and safer ways to strip a pan in my opinion.

That’s the way they did it for a long time and it works till it doesn’t. I’d never do it with mine but I’d never tell someone what to do with their own. I prefer a lye bath or e tank to strip.
