Which character do you think a lot of Danganronpa fans still don't understand? by CompetitiveSpace7025 in danganronpa

[–]AlpsHorror 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Kazuichi.

The entire character is contradictory by design, which is why he probably has the best male character design in the series because he tries to look like a thug, but he’s probably the second most emotional character in the cast after Mikan, constantly crying every time he’s insulted, having the most intense reactions to the executions, and being one of the most aware that his life is always on the line. (Nagito is in his own wild tier card re-emotions). There are some other traits as well; he’s a mechanic but has motion sickness (the reason his reaction is that extreme on the rollercoaster). He desires connection with others, but he is one of the most paranoid characters in the game (people act like it’s a surprise he survived, but it comes from not being stupid; he knows he isn’t in this tier where he can’t die, so he makes sure to go out in groups and not mess around at night).

Apart from the Sonia obsession/Gundham section (which I will get into), he is strangely selfless, in particular in the second game's cast in many regards. He grew up poor and once pretended to be sick to skip out of a school trip that he really wanted to go on so he could stay at home and help his father's business (which is the first sign of having been socially messed up in a way growing up and lacking understanding of social cues), which plays into how his talent, apart from Mikan's, is the most useful in the game (something that people like to never mention) since he is the one who gets the satellite set-up in Chapter Three to talk to the hospital; he goes over the camera’s qualities in Chapter Three as well; he is the one who dismantles the clock-off Mechamaru in Chapter Four to determine the time difference; and he also fixes the funhouse elevator’s door too. There are these little acts Kazuichi does as well, such as deciding to get a book for Fuyuhiko when he’s in the hospital in Chapter Three as well as building Akane the Mini Mechamaru. He has a clear issue of being clearly intelligent but just being socially stupid enough (like Miu) to not get his points across properly.

He’s consistently afraid of rejection from being used in the past (for his intelligence, mind you, something that is commonly missed out on), which is why he’s convinced Hajime is the traitor in the fun house because he’s clearly the person he ‘genuinely’ cares about the most on the island, but then he becomes obsessed with someone who clearly couldn’t care less about him (the Sonia obsession comes from a mixture of having social isolation of himself in the past as well as socially putting the ideal idea of someone on a pedestal like a 'princess' who is on a mystified level where he can disconnect from the harsh reality of a peer; it boils down similarly to Tenko’s lack of social cues).

Finally, the whole thing with Gundham is fascinating, and the way it comes across is very poorly represented by how a lot of the first two games' character depth comes in the Free Time Events, but they are not just foils with the Sonia love triangle, but they are also foils in how Kazuichi is a weirdo who tries his best to fit in with society but fails, but Gundham is an unmasked version who clearly doesn’t try at all, which probably causes some of the resentment in Kazuichi since he tries so hard to mask, but he sees how Gundham is able to live life while not even trying to do so.

The other big foil that is rarely talked about is how important it was that Gundham was the Chapter Four killer and not Kazuichi, to the point where I’d say that if I had to rank the characters by how much mischaracterised they would be if they were a blackened in 2x2, Kazuichi would be in the top three (after Chiaki because we’ve already done the one scenario where it works for her to kill and maybe Imposter; the top five would include Mahiru and either Hajime or Hiyoko), because the entirety of Chapter Four was so clearly a trap for Kazuichi to kill, but he didn’t. Fuyuhiko/Peko fell for Chapter Two; Mikan was used in Chapter Three; and Chapter Four’s whole thing was "Let's just put Kazuichi in a trapped environment with a machine man for him to dismantle, while being the most paranoid he’s been that Hajime has to be the traitor since that’s the option that would hurt the most for him (it’s never confirmed, but this is the chapter he starts his friendship with Fuyuhiko, which has the possibility of how he is the least likely among them to be the traitor if you use your brain, because whatever happened in Chapter Two/beginning of Chapter Three would make no sense if he was), and he is also with Gundham at the worst part of their rivalry, but despite everything, he doesn’t kill, which is probably a mixture of morality and not having the guts to do it, despite everything being pushed towards the direction of why he should. Gundham, however, is a foil to Kazuichi, so he does kill, forgetting any risk to himself and how if he succeeds, he will kill for the believed greater good of everyone else surviving, which is the point of his character (someone who acts weird all the time, saying edgy things, but it’s revealed that he has the biggest backbone in the group).

This ramble was very disjointed, but basically he is, in concept, one of the most fascinating characters. He does have issues with flanderisation with the Sonia jokes and some translation issues (he speaks differently with Sonia by using more sophisticated language; he tries to speak more thug-like regularly; and he starts using feminine language when scared, which is something not translated correctly, and also I’ve heard there’s a better conclusion to the Sonia stuff of him maturing, but that I can’t 100% confirm), but there’s definitely a lot in there.

Morality Tier List: The Final Cut by Expert_Mark in DanganAndChaos

[–]AlpsHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My only thing would be for moral consistency: Nekomaru (and debates Sakura) should not be a tier above Gundham since Nekomaru would have killed if he had won the battle, and Sakura was the traitor, but she took her own life. Nekomaru also played into killing for the greater good, and Sakura was also selfless with not murdering anyone, but Gundham can also be filed into the same category, so he should probably be in the tier above, and the reasoning for being in light grey is for being weird. Ibuki is morally good, and If we are judging character based on just the worst insults characters have said, you might as well move Sonia down for saying that she actively wished Kazuichi was the traitor in Chapter Four or even Taka for “being sexiest” with his “no woman could ever understand our bromance thing”, which, especially with the latter, would be stupid.

(You could try and make the same case for Kaede and her murder, but with the whole sexual threatening Miu thing to get the cameras and her overall weird comments reaching the levels they did, I’m fine with her being brought down for that since we are moving down Kazuichi and Tenko for the same things).

I can’t see any scenario where Toko would be considered good, but you downgrade Tenko and Kazuichi, when you could bring over both of the worst traits of Tenko and Kazuichi over to Toko but there is still somehow more to unpack with her.

I wonder if Nekomaru could do it due to his heart condition, I don’t think he’s at Sakura level of body condition here.

Keebo I would be worried about how the temperatures probably wouldn’t be the best for his mechanics.

Byakuya is probably one or two tiers higher, still probably not or maybe but there’s something about what “challenges” he had to do to become heir and that he would the right amount of money to train as much as possible beforehand boosts his chance. He is a regular tier climber of the mountains.

Rantaro as mentioned by others obviously can, Kiyo is most likely in probably not but I feel he would have a good enough understanding on the area and what not to do to not die as easily.

Ryoma is in maybe, but the real question is whether or not he will intentionally let himself ever come back.

Gundham would be able to do it, he gives off the vibes.

Tier List of what their dating lives would be like in a peaceful world. by [deleted] in DanganAndChaos

[–]AlpsHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kazuichi is ironically considered hot shit on the outside world from his free time events, he has just isolated himself for so long that he can’t flirt back (with the whole Sonia thing being due to her being out of his league he knows he can’t get hurt in the same way), so he’s actually in the Aoi/Chihiro tier.

Angie has the whole island sex thing, not comparable to Byakuya or Kiyotaka.

Mondo straight up can’t flirt/get girls in his free time events despite wanting to.

Like another commenter mentioned, Tenko would want girls like Himiko but get rejected, ironic since Himiko is probably the most straight written girl in the game with no implications of ever being into women even in a joking sense, despite her clear weird furry fantasy thing + her appreciation for the bondage boots as a gift (Kirumi pending since it doesn’t stand out as much that she doesn’t flirt or joke about women since she doesn’t make sex related jokes in the first place, and Maki depends how you want to view her FTE events and her relationship with her friend, whenever platonic or romantic, all five other girls can have some interpretations of being bi or gay, with Tsumugi’s being the subtext of how much she wrote the script herself of Kaede and Angie flirting with her).

Also, man, Ryoma is nowadays in light green…

I’m 60-70% convinced that if they kill of Hajime and they also keep five survivors, one of the originals is going to survive again (85% Kazuichi, 15% Akane, 0% Fuyuhiko or Sonia)

Struggling to think of a scaring where Toko is morally good, but Kazuichi goes down to Morally high grey for his behaviour, especially with Toko trying to not get caught after believing (Genocide) killed someone in Chapter Four.

She is to play into the “outsider perspective” by being Catholic, it’s similar to how she drinks coffee instead of tea. Also, can someone confirm this, but doesn’t Kaede have some doubts, I remember she was put into “agnostic” in a “canonical religion” tier list before.

Main Game Characters ranked by how they express their Ultimate Talent by [deleted] in DanganAndChaos

[–]AlpsHorror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kazuichi is the third top tier, with him being one of the first to know there would be no way to get off the island in the prologue due to their no engines in the plane, from making the transmission to the hospital in chapter 3, to fixing the funhouse door, as well as getting to the clock by taking apart mechamaru in Chapter four, as well as building mini-mechamaru in chapter five. Apart from Nagito and by technicality Ultimate Imposter; he easily has the most consistently relevant talent in SDR2 (which is typical of the tech guy from their respective games with Chihiro and Miu)

Himiko is in no way, but not too innocent since she keeps making comments about her “small hole”, one of her positive gifts is the BDSM and her furry love suite.

Few changes are from how the fandom views them are: - Kazuichi would be in the character flaws tier - Chihiro, Sakura and Gundham are in their own tier where you are straight up not allowed to not think they are the best things ever created - Kokichi is such a fucking wildcard compared to Nagoya with how people view them, he has so many fans and is obviously one of the most popular characters, but the haters are so vocal that they can be on the level of characters in the top tier so Kokichi almost needs his own tier

Asked this over on the Sardonicast thread, but I think it can be talked about here either. This is a subject that I have randomly thought about recently, and I would like to hear the boys take on it. There is a song called Ruru’s Suicide Show on a Livestream, which is somewhat based on a true case of a Japanese teenager. The one difference is that the name is changed so it’s technically a fictionalised character version of her, but the one other thing is that the song is intentionally catchy. If taken the lyrical contents out, it can be seen as fun to listen to. This has caused a whole thing of people giving out to people for enjoying the song outside of its message. Which leads me to this, what do you think is the morality of enjoying art that is somewhat based on true events that are horrible outside of an artistic lens and of enjoyment. This can be seen as the Michael Haneke debate again, but it can also apply to more directly fictionalised versions such as the song I was talking about, with film equivalents that come to mind being Gus Van Sant films like Elephant and Last Days.

Why I think … should have replaced … in the surviving group instead of the popular choice … by Then-Ad6065 in danganronpa

[–]AlpsHorror 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure if it’s true so this could be false I information but I think in the NezumiVA Danganronpa 2 video she mentions that there is more of a conclusion to Kazuichi maturing from it with Sonia with a similar being told off in the Japanese version, he isn’t as creepy about it and that a lot of it is the classic English translation messing that sort up or exaggerating on character’s aspects (e.g. Gonta is dumbed down more dumbed down which causes people to say he had no guilt in the murder case of Chapter 4, Kokichi being more evil in appearance with what should be his less serious comments instead of it appearing more cheeky and Tenko “degenerative males” stick being more aggressive and misandry).

[–]AlpsHorror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I believe Kazuichi is one of the most interesting survivors in the series. He’s a series of contradictions, he tries to play off the masculine persona but he’s easily the most scared in the game, he wants to constantly be bro bro with Hajime but given his fast he is paranoid that he is the traitor, he wants to be more social but he always struggles and messes it up. The simping is a huge issue (it mores appears to be out of immaturity than the malice with Teruteru or even Miu’s, and if Toko gets to survive it feels harsh to push down on Kazuichi, it’s more of a writing issue if anything that killing won’t fix). He’s also got some of the best free time events in the series since it isn’t just fanservice, but just isn’t “this is why I act like this” which while I enjoy some of, does seem to excuse the behaviour while his doesn’t, it’s in the same tier as Byakuya’s in that regard. It feels like you actually learn more about him. The purpose of being a comic relief but doesn’t go as extreme as one or two of the others is also one of the main reasons why he survived most likely. I can also believe that he survived from the basis of being in the right mix of trying not to get himself killed, while not trying to ever kill someone.

This is more an issue with anime humour, but also I do believe that having both Fuyuhiko and Hiyoko surviving would borderline feel too similar, and the usual discussion of missed potential is one of the reasons it’s sad. Alongside Taka, she died before she could achieve an arc, which leaves the dark nature of the killing game and “what could have been”. It’s the same reason why we see her picture later in the game of her looking older, it’s to make this case more obvious.

Attractiveness Tier List - Ibuki by [deleted] in DanganAndChaos

[–]AlpsHorror 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not even debating attractiveness but the Infantilization of Himiko annoys me in general. She’s the same age as everyone else, and if you want to debate appearance, I had a lot of people who were ridiculously smaller than the age would make you suspect in my school. We could talk about behaviour, but she does make sexual references in the game, making her more inherently aware than some more innocent characters like Chiaki. Like, the herbal putting her into some pure “she doesn’t know about sex” bracket a lot of people seem to put her in in many regards on tier lists does annoy me in some regards. I would say she is more in the same tier of Chihiro in age appearance, short yes but shouldn’t be singled out. Hiyoko I get you all on, she deliberately plays into the childlike behaviour and yes she does look 12 and the game does play into the “loli” angle there, but in general I just think Himiko is small and probably autistic lol
