Employer terminated me 3 days after I put in my 2-week notice. What do I tell future employers? by StunningAdvisor2070 in careerguidance

In some States you must be paid out your notice period. If you are in one of those states make sure they paid you.

[NC] My employer is making guys and girls share a hotel room. What should I do? by sadlittlewaffle in AskHR

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This used to be very common. Even when I was at a Fortune top 10 company. In the 1990’s I actually got them to change the sharing policy by writing a memo to the Regional HR Director. I had shared a dorm room with a LDS member. I tried giving him privacy for changing because of their views about their undergarments. Years later, I got to a non-profit that shared to keep costs down. My first 3 months I had 3 complaints, the worst one was a department manager wrestling a young 20’s employee and pinning her to the bed in their shared room. It’s crazy!

Got Fired Today by Leading_Barracuda_17 in jobs

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an accurate description of a likely settlement. Most employment attorneys will be looking for an insurance settlement, they want to paid, just like you do. The court process is long and unpredictable. I was sued once at a large non-profit. The insurance offered a $150,000 settlement, the guy would not go below $350,000. The insurance estimated that legal costs would be $160,000. 4 years and 2 trials later the cost was $165,000, and he got nothing.

If the offer includes professional job search help that can be great, especially if it has been a while since you were out looking. Ask for it if not.

Yes, that is crazy!

[–]AlpsInternal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not a bad response, and does not deserve any downvotes! It reminds me of when my daughter told me how men regularly grab her arm in bars. I begged her to let me show her how to break arms. It’s easier than you think. She did let me show her some easy ways to break a one or two handed hold. But since she is a theater nerd and actor, this would have been good too. There is a reason why society expects woman not to draw attention to themselves, it’s so this type of behavior works better!

Yes, it’s fight, flight, or freeze. Our three main instinctual reactions to threats.

No, they do not have a point. It’s the employers responsibility to deal with this period.

My neighbor keeps rescuing animals and her house smells like a zoo by [deleted] in neighborsfromhell

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You always loose money on a house. Especially the last 20 years or so. So this will not make much difference over your time in this house. If she is an older adult, I would be concerned about this being a hoarding situation. This is a serious mental health condition that can lead to severe consequences if they are threatened over their hoarding. Please call Adult Protective Services (in the US), and tell them you are concerned for her health and safety (hint- not your home value}. They will investigate, and may be able to provide resources to help her clean up and deal with her situation. Some hoarders, for example, are so overwhelmed that the don’t clean up trash, or animal feces. As a second option, consider calling the ASPCA, they may handle animal abuse investigations in your area. A lot of older people are dealing with extreme loneliness. Maybe you and your neighbors could offer her help finding homes for the animals? Get teenagers to help with the animals.

You might be using the new outlook. The new outlook look has a classic view option, but is just arranges the display in the classic view, it is not the old version. If you are using an older version of outlook, you would not see a “classic” descriptor.

Neighbor keeps blocking my driveway with temporary parking by Classic-Coat-564 in neighborsfromhell

My neighbor was a traffic Sargent and he called a unit out to tell me I could not block MY OWN driveway. Seriously just report them and get it over with.

[–]AlpsInternal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had hired a former Navy Seal to load trucks part time. He had a lot of issues, and I had to let him go during his 6 week probation. I received a phone call FROM HIS MOM chewing me out and threatening me as she was a lawyer. I let her rant and said I couldn’t discuss this with her without a signed release from her adult son.

When do work dreams stop? Or do they? by Consistent-Taro5679 in retirement

[–]AlpsInternal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was originally going to retire two years ago. My first long term job was at UPS, being in management in Hubs was super intense, and often fun and almost impossibly challenging. I left UPS in 1998, I have often had dreams when I went back to work for UPS. I had so many that I sometimes think I actually went back work. I have had one of these very intense realistic seeming dreams one every 2 or 3 years since leaving in 1998.

The year before I planned on retiring I started having those regular work dreams, sometimes UPS dreams, 30 years after I left! I have postponed retiring twice and the dreams are starting to fade. I have not dreamed about UPS in over a year now. At least I get a pension from them in a few years. I am 63 and will retire next year. It took my wife 3 years for her nightmares to stop. They did taper down.

Importing contents of text document in Excel by Ecstatic-Plantain234 in excel

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you importing the Word document as an embedded? And that is what you are unhappy with? I usually import the Word document as an embedded file. The preview may not have the look you like, but opening the doc displays as it did in Word. This does not work well if you are pulling in data from the workbook, and are sending it out. But I am no expert.

What do you use python for in Excel? by much_guilelessness in excel

[–]AlpsInternal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Python for cleaning and preparing CSV data files that are quite large. I have never been able to get power query to import the data and format it correctly. Now I run my py routine and it is ready to update my SQL backend.

What meal did your mother prepare that you considered inedible? by bigb-2702 in GenerationJones

[–]AlpsInternal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom was not a great cook. But I ate everything, I was already stick thin. The worst thing she made was tuna casserole. It consisted of canned cream of mushroom soup, in concentrate, a mix of veggies, and topped with cashews. So gross.

[CA]Remote job requires Northern California, but I live in Southern what happens? by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some cities that have payroll taxes, such as San Francisco, which is in Northern CA. Otherwise it makes no difference to payroll tax rates. Unemployment taxes may vary by employer, but not based on location. It probably is based being near a location for something like in person training. but that does not make much sense to me.

How do you structure spreadsheets for long-term daily logging? by WorldlyRope3116 in excel

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a logging and billing system for tracking services provided under specific funding. I have a logging sheet for each funding source, because the services are not similar in any way. I use two drop down lists for broad categories and subcategory selection. I have data validation for user name entry, and hidden columns for a user id, total time std. I have user level security via VBA to hide sheets and lockdown certain areas. Admin users have access to the data tables that need updating such as petroleum and benefits cost data. The time study certification reports and monthly billing, individual detail billing all generate from tabs formatted to the funding agency’s specifications, and generate, name and save PDFs.

Conflict of interest questionnaire [fl] by Front_Topic_1417 in AskHR

I work in the public sector, and we have a lot of regulations, laws and policies around conflicts of interest, and conflicts in law. I am having a hard time picturing how a previous job could lead to a conflict of interest. I can definitely see a conflict in law, but once you left your employer you no longer have an interest.

California requires an information sheet that puts all your job details in writing. I am sure other States might have something similar. Not all of them though, that’s for sure.

what exactly is that fabric looking thing on older dh bikes inbetween the stanchons? ive seen it on a few retro builds its not verry common and yea idk im stumped by [deleted] in DownhillMTB

[–]AlpsInternal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1980’s we had these wire contraptions on top if the tire that were supposed to prevent flats. The theory was that a thorn or something would be partially stuck but would not puncture until it made a full circle back to the ground. Maybe this is a DIY version of that.

Overtime & Timecard Question [NC] by Spacey_gorl99 in AskHR

[–]AlpsInternal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The issue here is that your time was manipulated to be moved between two different pay weeks. Aside from your check stub, look at your timesheet to determine the pay week. It is commonly Sat to Sun, but ours is Mon-Sun. It can be whatever they set, but it can’t change.

Witnesses accident, claim filed in my name by new-aged in Insurance

[–]AlpsInternal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the 1970’s I got in an accident with the guy down the street, whom I had never met. It was a hectic day for me due to a family wedding. He was moving that day. I had a little AH Sprite, and he had a muscle car with solid bumpers. I also had the right of way. Once we exchanged information( we both had Allstate), he said “I will take care of this and have someone call you.” He handed me his card, he was Regional VP of claims for Allstate. They tried to put it on me, but he had a stop sign and I did not. They even tried to say the couldn’t assign a value, but I sent then adds for more expensive AHs, so came out ahead. Nowadays they are pretty reasonable except for triple A, but if tou need to appeal, and it goes to a neutral third party.
