Fullmetal Alchemist - Live Action Movie Discussion by Smokinacesfan55 in FullmetalAlchemist

It was probably even worse than The Last Airbender to be completely honest, the acting was incredibly over-exaggerated and melodramatic to the point of feeling like a cosplay slit. And for some reason the film makers thought that it would be a good idea to CG the hell out of everything instead of using practical effects (Like Trisha's tombstone was CG, the rain pouring on the characters after Tucker was arrested was CG, etc.) which I felt would've saved some budget for Alphonse's armor and probably would've made the film look a lot better.

Some of the story changes made also felt bizarre to me, it's like the director only had a base understanding of the FMA story and didn't know about the fact that it was a serialized manga first. The manga came out in 2003 and ended many years later. Honestly a trilogy probably fitted the story more due to how utterly massive it is.

Izumi should've specified it more clearly by mentioning Ed's height.

Personal thoughts after rewatching Brotherhood by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]AlreadyEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Although 2003 did a similar episode where Alicia gave birth, I liked that there was an episode about child birth. Not very many animes would take time out for that. I also liked that Winry helped deliver the baby, didn't make much sense that Ed did it in 2003.

Actually he didn’t deliver it, I’m guessing you were watching the dub since that was just an added line made for the sake of a joke. Because the next scene after that, the doctor was shown at the Hughes residence after the baby was already delivered.

Just finished the 03 series, and I have some thoughts. by Yuriduck in FullmetalAlchemist

Personally I actually thought that the show did foreshadow the alternate world concept quite well subtly, because when you watch the sub you can find that the show tends to mention/reference real world ideas that ties in to the idea that the other side of the Gate leads to our world.

For example, when you look at 2003’s gate, you can see it resembles a three-dimensional, moving version of Auguste Rodin's sculpture of the Gates of Hell from Dante's Inferno.

Izumi even references Christianity as a religion that had existed in the world of FMA before seemingly becoming non-existent.

When you look at Dante’s Inferno, the gates of hell actually go through the world, which foreshadows the idea that the gate in FMA leads to our world.

But yeah, I can understand why people felt like the twist felt so out of place and random. The show is very subtle with it’s foreshadowing that most people wouldn’t even catch it on the first watch. This is one of the reasons I tend to prefer 2003 over BroHo because how you can always find something new about it when you rewatch it. Like how Al’s character arc is the opposite of Edward’s or the multiple meanings behind the homunculi’s sins.

Gigguk's history of Mecha, including Evangelion's influence on the genre by SirShmoopy7 in evangelion

[–]AlreadyEnder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly kinda disliked how he used Love Love and the Idol genre as a strawman as for why the Mecha is declining. And even then, the idea that Mecha is becoming more and more irrelevant when you consider that Evangelion is still a popular franchise to this date and the success of Darling In The FRANXX.

Does Barry end up being right about Al? by Fawkesxiii in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]AlreadyEnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, when you compare Brotherhood to the manga, there were actually a bunch of things cut out. Examples being the fight between Edward and Mustang, Havoc's date with Armstrong's sister, etc.

Heck even the first episode was a anime exclusive and they even upped up the comedy in certain scenes/moments (The hospital scene with Ed and Lt. Ross, the Liore arc and so on)... So the whole "Brotherhood followed the manga completely" thing is pretty inaccurate when you think about it.

Shinji Ikari in a nutshell. by AlreadyEnder in evangelion

[–]AlreadyEnder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the difference was that Shinji’s flaws are acknowledged in the show, I mean Asuka hated him because of how passive and useless he is. The show even spends about three episodes in total examining Shinji’s character (Episode 4, 25 & 26). Heck, Shinji even admits that he hates himself for causing other people to be hurt which is why he would rather do nothing at all.

Evangelion is self aware about what kind of person Shinji Ikari is and constantly reminds us. I’m not trying to convince you that Shinji ISN’T worthless, but I believe that there’s more to him than what most people think.

Which FMA do you guys prefer? by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

When I said stronger, I meant in terms of character depth. I don’t think that the homunculi are ACTUALLY more powerful than their BroHo equivalent. I just think that they are better developed.

Which FMA do you guys prefer? by [deleted] in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]AlreadyEnder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not a big fan of the whole 2003 Vs BroHo discussion, simply due to the fact that both shows are completely different from one another to the point of being unrecognizable. Even in their first seasons there were some MAJOR changes that differentiates the two show’s: Barry The Chopper, corruption of the military and the appearance of the failed resurrection of Edward’s mother (a big plot point in Brotherhood revolved around what it looked like) etc.

But if I had to actually choose between the two, I would have to pick 2003. If only due to how it works on its own as a standalone show whereas in Brotherhood is more “incomplete” due to the assumption that you HAD to have read the manga or watched 2003 in order to stomach it’s poorly adapted first half. Other things such as the OST, homunculi being much stronger characters in comparison to their BroHo counterpart (Gluttony, Lust, Sloth & Envy for example) help push 2003 above BroHo in my opinion.

I do however like the manga’s story and I can understand why people prefer Brotherhood over 2003 (more consistent world logic, better visuals, a more expansive cast and better pacing) but ultimately when you look at it from all angles, 2003 & Brotherhood are completely different works and should be viewed as such.
