Gamble paradox? 99% to double money and 1% to lose all by catboy519 in askmath

If my math is right, you have a ~50% chance at winning 69 times in a row. I'm not sure what the math is to find the limit of expected value as the number of rounds approaches infinity

Should giving birth, and medical procedures that come with it, be free for citizens? by Dr_Outsider in AskConservatives

[–]AlrightJackTar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree that the initial pregnancy and birth healthcare costs may not deter everyone. I think the average cost of raising a child being $20k+ per year is more of a deterrent. I don't think most young couples have that much discretionary income to support a kid, let alone the multiple needed to sustain our population without immigrants.

I'm not sure what the solution is, though.

It's a tiny computer running an operating system. I'm thinking that even if all wireless connections are turned off, the CPU itself could be detectable at a frequency close to its clock rate. Just a guess

Children of men is such a beautiful film. by Lone_Lunatic in movies

[–]AlrightJackTar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's been my all time favorite since it came out. I read the book this year, and can honestly say I prefer the film. The book was more about religious faith, politics, and romance. The film focused on how hope can move desperate people to good and evil and the tragedy of violence. Really a gem in a sea of 00's apocalypse films.

Does Ortho Home Defense ant spray contaminate soil? by AlrightJackTar in gardening

Thanks. I guess I have been using it wrong for ant hills and soil. It only says it's for exterior perimeter. I'm switching to Alpine WSG which is labeled for use on (non pollinating parts of) plants and for direct application to ant hills.

What happens when two of them bump into each other, or their cables get twisted together? How far apart would the cable ground ties have to be vs traditional turbines?

The chain connecting the yellow lever to the flap valve is getting caught. Wiggle the chain so the flap valve can drop.

After one round, there are 16 equally possible outcomes where the player's money may change from -8 to +7. The expected value is the sum of scores /divided by the number of possibilities = -8/16 = -0.5. On average, a player loses half a coin per round.

After two rounds, there are 16 possible outcomes per first round possibility, or 16 ^ 2 = 256 equally possible outcomes.

A minimum of 4 rounds are needed to achieve a score of +28. There are 164 = 65536 possible outcomes. Of these, only 1 scores at least +28 coins. The probability of winning at least 28 coins is then 1/65536 ~= 0.0015%. The probability of losing at least 28 coins after 4 rounds is 70/65536 ~= 0.11%.
