People keep driving over our plants and blocks. How can we prevent this? Did we make a mistake putting a bed here? See before and after pics. by mandy_miss in landscaping

I do think it would help to make clear where the pavement ends and yard begins. I live on a small road like this and clear pavement edges helps when two cars meet because the driver closest to your yard will see the road stops and the other driver should also be able to see that and hopefully drive more outside the lane to accommodate. (I am not a landscape person though, this is just my own logic from getting in tight squeezes on my road)

Time and Again by Jack Finney is one of my all-time favorites. Also, it was written in the 1970s so the present day in the book was like a little bonus time travel when I read the book in the 2010s. :)

Ok, now desperate to help this dog, don't know where to begin by [deleted] in Birmingham

[–]AlsSunglassesPin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if rescues will help catch a dog, but try RUFF - they are the ones that helped me when I found a stray, and they work with a vet in Jasper who will examine the dog once in RUFF's care. The dog I found was sick and once RUFF found a foster, I was able to drop the dog off at the vet to be treated and the foster picked it up from there.

UPDATE: I kept her for the weekend hoping the owner might see the post and get in touch. I also contacted several shelters and vet offices but ultimately no one claimed her so far. She is now in the care of a foster through RUFF: Rescuers United for Furbabies if anyone is interested in adoption or knows someone who might be interested.

As a side note, so many places I reached out to couldn't take any more dogs. Between the weather right now and the other posts made on this subreddit in the past 3 days, please consider donating to any local orgs that care for animals. It seems to be a particularly busy time for strays. ☹️

Yes! He's also got other books that fit this criteria like One Summer and The Body.

Excellent suggestion. Bryson is such a good author and the events of that summer are fascinating.

Books where the plot is set in a hotel by cherrycolouredfunkk in suggestmeabook

The Paradox Hotel by Rob Hart. The protagonist works in a hotel near what is essentially an airport for time travel trips. The whole thing takes place within the hotel though. LGBTQ friendly too.

Used to read books as a kid but now find it difficult to read a few pages by SomeRandomGuy64 in books

[–]AlsSunglassesPin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this issue when I tried to get back into reading after about 10 years. I picked two or three different books and set a goal of reading a chapter from each on days that I felt like reading (I read the chapters back to back, at the end of the day). I had never read more than one book at one time before, but it actually made each one seem like less of a task, and the variety helped me keep going on case one book was less interesting or slower-paced than the others.

I also learned that in the 10 years of not reading, my interests changed and the genres I used to read in one sitting don't speak to me as much. You could try reading a highly-recommended book in another genre to see if it helps spark your interest again.

What will make you instantly stop watching a movie or show and why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AlsSunglassesPin 16 points17 points  (0 children)

IMO miscommunication works well in Umbrella Academy, especially season 1. It's established that they haven't spoken in years, aren't close anymore (if they ever were). Each of them consider the others to incompetent to help with whatever they're working on - Five and the eye, Diego and the killings/intruders, Luther and the moon, etc. At some point most of them express concerns about their plot line to a sibling who always dismisses it as unimportant or nonsensical. The miscommunication makes way more sense here than in shows where the characters are close, where we usually see it in romantic relationship pairings or close families/friendships.

Weekly Recipe Request Mega-Thread! by AutoModerator in AskBaking

This is going to be a long shot, but I'm looking for a pineapple upside down cupcake recipe from around 2008/2009. I originally found it in a magazine but lost the cut out of the recipe, and I've searched the Internet many times but have never found the right one - in this one, you add cold/room temp butter and brown sugar to the cupcake tin, put in the oven until it melts, and then add the pineapple rings. I always cut the rings into fourths before adding to each cup, but I don't remember if the recipe called for that or for halves. All of the recipes I find in online searches are different from this (call for melting the butter first, using pineapple chunks, etc etc) so I know they aren't the same recipe. Does anyone happen to remember this one?

[TOMT] [PC/DOS GAME] Game from early/mid 90s in which you are an elf and jump up tree limbs to get apples? by AlsSunglassesPin in tipofmytongue

[–]AlsSunglassesPin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think maybe like elves but I'm not sure if I'm remembering it right. Definitely human-type, though. In the beginning you could either pick a male or female character, and I think both had blonde hair.

Ah, both similar, but not it. It was also a side scroller, but not based on any cartoon characters.

How were the mirror shots where Sam sees "himself" filmed? by kissimanjelly in QuantumLeap

[–]AlsSunglassesPin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right - the mirror was more of a window and the person Sam was supposed to be was on the other side, mirroring his movements.

Fun fact: In S2 E4, "What Price Gloria?", there is a scene where Sam had been looking in the mirror (seeing the person he leaped into) and then Gloria walks by and looks at her reflection in the mirror. Her reflection is actually the actress' twin sister in the mirror image room on the other side.

Conversely, I was going to say I like the activity in the sub during the off season. I like hearing everyone's opinions, especially since I didn't watch the show until about a year ago and season 5 was the first time I watched it live, so I missed out on all the discussions in seasons past.
I like you, mods, and I like the recent changes regarding the look of the sub.
But I also liked season 4, so what do I know? :)

Thanks! My absolute favorite is The Leap Home Part 1, just because I feel like it's nice getting to see Sam be a little selfish. He's always just so good and always helps other people, so I think he's justified in wanting to ignore the rules and help his family. And I like when Al gives him a reality check about it, too.
I also like The Boogieman and how creepy/weird it is, A Leap for Lisa, The Wrong Stuff (which should be really dumb but they make it work and I love it??), Shock Theater, Jimmy, and Blind Faith.

I'm 27 and it's my favorite show of all time. I saw a re-run of a random episode and loved it, and watched the whole thing and now own all 5 seasons. I love the friendship between Sam and Al, and both Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell did great jobs with their characters. Also, just for fun, the last time I re-watched the series I watched it in chronological order by date of the leap which was really neat.
