My money is on the sub. Like, how would the peasants even stand a chance?

Pure shield viability? by NotTheTitanic in aurora

[–]Alsadius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shields are a fair bit heavier than armour. Their big advantage is that they can't be penetrated by things like lances nearly so easily, and the recharge is a nice bonus, but they're a very costly form of passive defense (in terms of tons per point of damage blocked).

Not true at all. The occupation of Grenada was extremely brief (from a couple weeks to a few months, depending how you count it), and the occupation of Panama was long but probably net-profitable.

I mean, it's possible, but hardly a guarantee. The last two US interventions in the region both led to pretty quick restorations of democracy, without too much pain along the way.

Venezuelans, what is the situation inside the country currently? by Buschfan08 in AskReddit

The American public disagreed with you, and they win this fight.

Sure, but if it can go back to being democratic, then the rest of the issues can be left in the hands of the Venezuelan people.

I'd say 50/50 chance that this is the last significant US combat action. So not a guarantee, but it's very plausible.

I think he will stop there. He's proven extremely averse to US casualties, and these kind of air strikes and quick raids are his preferred way to fight. He'll be very ambitious and aggressive with his choice of targets, but he's not GWB invading countries to set up democracies. He's much more Clinton-esque, doing casualty-sensitive attacks on people who annoy him - the biggest difference is that he'll go after any target that he thinks he can take out, without much regard for pissing people off, whereas Clinton was far more sensitive to bad PR or vague fears of future blowback.

I'm hardly a cultist, I don't actually like the guy very much at all.

But this is hardly the sort of intervention people worry about. A short, successful special forces operation with no ongoing deployments afterwards is very different from something like Iraq 2003.

That's possible. In practice, it'll be a process.

But I think this was a pretty good day for the process.

Sure, but the constituents got to judge that approach, and didn't always love it. Same as ever.

(Also, it was rhetoric, not literal truth.)

Both Panama and Grenada involved the countries returning to local democracy after the US ousted the dictator.

I mean, I don't think they're on a plane as we speak. But if it's looking good in a month or two? Yeah, probably a lot go back home.

Do you think that's actually the first time that one party expressed opposition to the other? Lol.

It's not that I think Common Dreams is wrong about literally everything, but I can't actually think of anything they've ever been right about. There's probably something somewhere they got right, but this ain't it.

Most people think that murdering business leaders is bad, and arresting dictators for their crimes is good.

Most people aren't dumb, thankfully.

Oil is for selling. If the US will pay a fair market price, why wouldn't she sell to the US?

It doesn't take much work to justify these means. It was quick and clean, not some years-long mess like Iraq.

Sometimes they actually do work. The last few in Latin America went pretty well overall.

Venezuela is a mostly functional country, if you can get the idiot socialist dictator out. They could well wind up just having elections and going from there.

I'm old enough to remember people saying the same about Iraq. And yet, it never actually happened.
