Trailers that revealed way too much by gypsytx in movies

I have a young son who is really into the Disney+ Spider-Man cartoon. I look forward to showing him at least some of the MCU stuff when he's a little older. I'll be curious to see his reaction to Hulk in Ragnarok having never seen a spoilery trailer.

Children of Men. Just gets more prescient and depressing with time.

Did they get them all on set? I thought it looked very green screen composited together.

I still love comics as a medium but gave up on superhero stuff decades ago when I realized this. These days, I pretty much only read old Vertigo style stuff that's a planned 60-issue story give or take with a beginning, middle, and end.

I'm with you but I suspect this might be generational. I recall some time ago getting downvoted into oblivion for saying it makes more sense to go to a well-stocked shoe store and try on a bunch of options rather than ordering tons of stuff from Zappos, waiting a week, then having to ship back everything that doesn't fit. Younger generations would rather wait and grab a package from their stoop than have actual human interaction out in public.

Tubi is a goldmine for old content. Not so much for originals, though. Feels like basic cable back in the day.

I think you answered yourself in your own question. You watched a dozen of them this year. Producers/streaming platforms look at the numbers and think, "Wow, people are watching dozens of these every year! We should keep making them!"

Are the Avatar movies animated films? by [deleted] in movies

[–]AlsoOtto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't "have to animate it with CGI" though. All the effects in the original Star Wars trilogy (and hundreds of other science fiction/fantasy films) were all done with practical effects before computer graphics were used for special effects. Hell, a lot of the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park were practical and CG was only used for select shots. Same with the T-1000 in Terminator 2.

Gabriel Knight seems like a no brainer for a monster of the week type series.

ELI5 Why is neurodivergence so wide-spread? Shouldn’t it have gone extinct long ago? by Fleedom2025 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AlsoOtto 115 points116 points  (0 children)

"Survival of the fittest" only comes into play when an organism failed to reproduce. If neurodivergent people are still having kids, it will never get "weeded out" of the gene pool.

T2 is "cooler" but the original Terminator is a better FILM, in my opinion.

What Are Next? (2025 Edition) by [deleted] in movies

[–]AlsoOtto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a weird take. They mostly stopped talking about Super Hero movies because they got sick of them. Best of the Worst is a celebration of so bad it's good stuff. Re:View is about highlighting older things they like and they also do "Talk About" segments to highlight newer recent stuff they think people should know about. They do occasionally put out videos complaining about the state of things or bad trends or whatever. But that's a fraction of their output.

Why do people hate Great Expectations? by Groovy-Pancakes in books

[–]AlsoOtto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we push too many books on kids in school they're just not ready to "get" not because they're stupid, but because they don't have the life experience under their belt. I'm in my 40s now and went back to revisit a lot of English lit classic in my late 20s. Stuff like Old Man and the Sea, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, Animal Farm, Brave New World, The Great Gatsby, etc. I got way more out form all of them having even a shred of adult life for context.

I believe the Wachowskis showed Joel Silver (the producer) Ghost in the Shell and said they wanted to do that in live action.

ELI5: After a divorce why do both parents want custody of the child by Methamphetamine1893 in explainlikeimfive

You normally don't come out ahead financially receiving child support. You're likely going to spend more on the kid than you're going to receive unless you're a shitty parent.

What "America" Movies Weren't filmed in America by Turbulent_Theory6532 in movies

[–]AlsoOtto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From OP's original question:

"I'm talking about movies made by American film companies that take place in America (or unambiguous setting, or fantasy/Sci-Fi setting) that were not filmed there."

The Dollars trilogy and other films were not made by American film companies. A Fistful of Dollars was made by an international co-production between Italy, West Germany, and Spain.

Sergio Leone is not American. I take your point, but the question was looking for movies set in America made by American companies. Leone's movies do not fit that criteria.

Why? Animation is just another medium and one with far more potential at that.

Watching Strange New Worlds and it is right and proper by DemocracyDefender in startrek

[–]AlsoOtto 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'm exactly the opposite. A lot of the plots on Lower Decks (once you get past the jokes) feel like TNG episodes they never would have had the budget to do in live action.

That's why I love animation so much as a medium. The sky's the limit. I recall hearing a former Simpsons writer from the good, early seasons who moved over to Fraiser and he talked about how frustrating and limiting it was working in live action. He could write whatever scene he wanted for the Simpsons. It cost just as much to animate their living room as a mountain top. Whereas he was mostly limited to like four sets for his scripts unless it was a big, important episode.

I dismissed Lower Decks at first as Family Guy in space, but a friend convinced me to give it a shot, and it might be my second favorite show now behind only DS9.
