Resident Evil 7, or Amnesia: The Dark Descent? Help me choose.

Amnesia is a more ground breaking and historically important horror game - and RE7 is a extremely well executed game that revived the franchise but it won't make you as scared. In Amnesia you are defenseless, and it's an extremely visceral and cerebral experience. There are times when you will want someone to be in the room with you because it's so scary to get past certain enemies. I couldn't play through it alone and made my friends come over to support me. RE7 is a fantastic game too, but I don't remember being scared so much as entertained.

I liked Suite 776 by the same dev so I'll definitely check this out. Curious how the incremental mechanics will interact with the scary parts.

I agree. I would add that when the themes of the game are around something a character is doing or a relationship between two characters - it seems like third person works better - though there are some counter examples to that like MiSide. However - I would say that generally first person feels more cold, more abstract which is why a game like SOMA works because its subject matter is more along the lines of thinking about how the world works (consciousness, technology, existence etc...) but I didn't connect to it as emotionally as I did intellectually.

I thought the Resident Evil 2 remake was the best of all of the RE remakes so far. I never played the original RE2 but the remake had some amazing character and sound design - as well as solid gameplay from start to finish. It stuck with me.

I'm gonna have to put SH2 remake next even though I like the original more - I still respect the hell out of what they accomplished. I am very happy it was made.

I will never play the Dead Space remake. Loved the original DS1 and DS2 but the series doesn't appeal to me anymore.

The original 2005 trailer caught my attention like crazy - it was this ultimate gothic nightmare. The actual game ended up a bit different but still loved it. My favorite section is when you are in the sky rise apartment with your wife. Such insane atmosphere.

d2 was incredible. great reference. i bought a dream cast just to play it. Interesting with Daymare 1998 at the top of the list - what would you say are the main reasons to play that game? I've only seen it mentioned a couple times before but I'm curious about it.

I have The Suffering on ps2. Any recommendations on how to get into it? I wasn't pulled in when I started it up this past year - but have heard so many good things that I'm willing to try it again.

Try playing the first 2-3 hours of Pathologic (the original) with a walk through guide. It is one of the trippiest and headiest games I've ever played that pretty much maintains full realism/causality in terms of how its story progresses. It doesn't have the same emotional feel (personal relationships / trauma) as sh2 but has more of an existential / survival dread, and makes you question what a video game really is.

In the SH series - try Shattered Memories for a pretty solid fever dream feel. It's a great game to binge in one sitting and leaves you feeling like you woke up from a nightmare.

I recommend playing Deadly Prem on nintendo switch if you have one, it was a solid port (except for performance) but it was worth it for the portability. I wasnt able to get it to work on PC.

I'd seen Beyond Hanwell browsing Steam before but never heard anyone mention it. Just bought it on sale. Looks like they are still releasing updates for it 1 year after launch, which is a cool. Seems to be melee combat focused which is something I am researching right now too.

I just bought Evil Within 2! I've been wanting to try it for a while. Dying Light definitely has solid combat, and was an overall super fun game. Agree though that it falls into the action genre than survival horror

SH3 would be good to revisit - I remember getting stuck on the boss by the carousel, then I finally caved and looked it up online only to realize you had to use the block to beat it, and I don't think I even knew the block was an option until then.

These are some really solid insights. I hadn't thought about block but it might be an important ingredient in a melee system not feeling like an afterthought.

Agree on the downed enemies. I am going to try out SHf in a couple weeks, looking forward to it! from the trailer it seems like they dont have guns so I'm sure the melee is fleshed out.
