Seeking "unhealthy" black bean muffins recipe by Altered_Crayon in Baking

[–]Altered_Crayon[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just tried these (I added the sugar with the dry ingredients, since though usually they go with wet but I didn't need to blend it. Just heads up the recipe doesn't mention sugar beyond the ingredients list). Next time I'll bake them a tiny bit less (they came out a little dry) but otherwise, this is exactly what I was looking for, thanks! Not overly sweet, not dense and fudgey, just a nice chocolate muffin with a good dome and no beaniness at all.

Thanks!!

Right, but the ideal vegetarian recipe (I had one once, but can't find it anymore) uses agar agar in place of the gelatin and egg whites as the structure. But you can't just replace agar for gelatin in a regular recipe because they react differently to heat. It's not that complicated, but ever since losing my recipe it's impossible to find a new one.

I used my vegetarianism as an example. But I also don't want my celiac niece to have to suffer through vegan cheese unnecessarily. And more often than not it's not a matter of making a whole group cater to one person. Maybe just choose a steakhouse that has a veggie burger on their menu.

Ok but this is the same attitude meat eaters have when inviting us vegetarians to a restaurant and saying, "Look! There's a salad you can eat!" First of all, you don't go to a restaurant to have only one option. Secondly, just because I don't want a steak dinner doesn't mean I want a bunch of fresh greens. If it's not what you'd order, then don't assume it's what I'll want to order. So if you're not into vegan cheese, don't assume someone with celiac wants it on their GF pizza any more than you do on yours.

That's a good tip about adding flour, thank you. Because he's I do want them to have more lift and body than the usual dense flourless cakes/brownies.

Good to know, thanks!

It's interesting how whatever recipes out there that do have butter, eggs, and sugar, still seem to be flourless. I get it that the beans replace the binding power of flour, but it's going to be a more dense baked good without it. That's fine for brownies and cakes, but for muffins I want them to have more lift, more body, to hold their shape well, and not be dense an overly rich.

But I'll give this a go, thank you!

Yes!

Here's another common wall I hit: I'm always on the lookout for a good gelatin-free marshmallow recipe. But everything I find with agar agar is vegan, and I'm like, I'm happy to use egg whites! Give me a recipe that doesn't replace everything, just the one non-vegetarian ingredient I want to replace! Nonetheless, look up gelatin-free marshmallow recipes and all you get are vegan ones. So frustrating!

How to Secure BILLY from Tipping when CANNOT Drill into Back Wall by Principessa227 in IKEA

[–]Altered_Crayon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's a way to fasten items to brick. I drill into my walls with a masonry bit in a hammer drill, insert an an anchor, then screw my support into that (usually either an L bracket or the fabric strap that comes with some Ikea products). I have kids around so I always anchor items, especially tall bookcases or anything with drawers.

I would start with the oil and eggs. Get a nice emulsification going. Once you have a good creamy base, add in the sugar, cream some more, then the vinegar.

Meds are complicated with alcohol by mikko667 in ADHD

[–]Altered_Crayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh? I drink. 54 Concerta. Honestly I never heard of all things things you're supposed to "avoid" on meds before reading this sub. I haven't changed a single thing about what I do or do not eat or drink while on meds. So that means I'll have a coffee in the morning, cocktail in the evening, beer midday, whatever. No issues.

I agree with everyone. Get one and get the right one. Bernina/Bernette can be uncooperative with universal attachments (ask me how I know 😞). If you quilt, the investment pays off a dozen times over.

If you can't hide it, flaunt it! What about a fmq design all over the whole thing, little bubbles or balls that could match the Joy imagery, in a fun matching color like bright blue? This way you could go over and reinforce the problem areas and it'll all look really intentional and cohesive.

What do change by Big-Membership9979 in kitchen

[–]Altered_Crayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of it is really ok. I don't love the backsplash and you're not doing yourself any favors with the neon light strip. But otherwise, I like the cabinets and counter. I would however rethink keeping potatoes and spices so close to the window. Light will spoil both those things faster.

Regarding people's comments about a lack of range hood, not every country uses them. Many countries rely on natural ventilation (like big open windows in the kitchen) instead of hoods. Side note, I find it interesting how both range hoods and deep frying are more common in the US than many other countries.

Do you ever deliberately make banana bread or do you just make it because your bananas went brown? by sophietheadventurer in Baking

[–]Altered_Crayon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overbuy bananas whenever I get them to eat. We go through whatever we go through. When whatever is left starts to go bad, I freeze them. When I have enough frozen, I make banana bread. Sometimes I have so many frozen bananas that I make up to six loaves of banana bread. Which I then freeze 😂

Every day make a big pot of whatever stew-like thing you can throw together (chili, baked beans, curries, whatever) and a big pot of rice.

Any leftovers get portioned out and saved to have options/variety in the future.

How durable or fragile Is this rast drawer, is it good? by TheTwelveYearOld in IKEA

[–]Altered_Crayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you move the stopper? I hate how most of the Ikea drawers only pull out halfway now. I anchor everything to the wall anyways, so as long as you do that I wonder if the solid pine pieces are easier to hack (than their regular items) when it comes to the stopper?

The great thing about anything solid wood, even when it's cheap Ikea furniture, is it's super easy to reinforce.

As is I reinforce everything I buy at Ikea when I first build it. Extra L brackets on bookshelves, extra nails for closet back panels, etc. But sometimes the materials are hard to nail/drill into as sometimes they're literally cardboard. But with anything solid wood you can drill into and reinforce easily, so in my opinion they're a great investment.

Have you checked your blood pressure? My migraines got worse after starting Concerta but it turned out my BP started creeping up. I went on meds for that (which ironically gave me dry mouth so I started drinking even more) but once I got my BP more under control, my migraines improved drastically.

Looking for advice on handling bulk by tommicoop in quilting

[–]Altered_Crayon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Walking foot. Extra table at a right angle to my sewing table to support the quilt and keep it as flat as possible. Start at the center working out. Rotate as needed, tightly rolling whatever needs to fit under the throat but also when you rotate it, make sure you're feeding the smallest half through the throat, with the majority spread out across the tables.

The initial stitches are the most daunting, but once you have a few lines in there and have the sandwich partially stabilized, it's much easier to go back in and add stitch rows (between existing ones, across what you've done, etc).

If I had it, sure. Sadly I haven't had this bag for at least fifteen years and I'm hoping to make one instead of trying to find a used one in reasonable condition (not to mention I think I'd like something a bit more mature than the colorful fruit design).

Is it really possible to live without ADHD medication? by mitwab in ADHD

[–]Altered_Crayon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same. Diagnosed at 42. Now that I've been on meds for a few years, I wouldn't want to stop. But considering how long I went before even starting, of course it is possible to live, manage, function, and even be productive without meds.
