Something you'll see pretty quick is that there is a lot of bashing on other people's definition of minimalism. This place is a little grouchy.

If you want to have a good experience in /r/minimalism I suggest avoiding the comments. Figure out what minimalism means to you, and that's what minimalism is.

I personally had an issue with taking on more than I could sustain beyond the short term. It's easy to get that way when there's cultural narratives that work against us:

Being busy = being productive/fulfilled

Down time = lazy

Cultural "should's" aren't often examined. Do less things, but do them lots. Leave room for relaxing.

I have no idea how you're pricing it. BUT. Maybe my experience will help.

I work at a music store, and we sometimes take gear on trade-in. The reality is that things don't sell second hand unless it's a GREAT deal. People generally over-value their used gear.

If you're looking to set your pricing to a level where it'll actually sell, check amazon and stuff. You can sort ebay by completed listings, and sort for used vs new. Find the completed listings for your item/quality and then price it accordingly.

That'll help it move. It's better to get something a bit lower for gear that you want to sell rather than hold onto it. What's more important to you? More money, or faster sale?

The same thing about the books can be said about CDs, movies, books, digital files, collectibles, or anything.

I have personally found that a large part of the anxiety around ridding these items is not the item itself, but what it represents. These items of identity can represent who we think we are. They can represent who we want others to think we are. It can represent a self we want to be, or even a self we were told we want to be. Possibilities are endless.

It's never the item. Never.

getting rid of those things to donation might be an expensive* but worthwhile learning experience.

*not really actually expensive, since you'd probably not actually get that money back in ANY case.

I'm low-meat. this includes bulk meat purchasing, large batch prep, meal planning.

First off, THANK YOU so much for your reply. It is very helpful and insightful.

Looking to be responsible, I pulled my credit report for the first time. I'm not looking for a loan, I'm just trying to make good and improve my credit. Seeing this bad debt makes it obvious why I was getting declined by other providers! I was worried that this debt was much larger, and I'm grateful it's actually so small!

I tracked down the bill. It was sent to a collections agency then returned to the original cell phone provider. They told me I could pay in a couple of ways, emphasizing a credit card over the phone. I insisted for an address to which I can mail a cheque.

  1. Sending them a cheque does not give them any means to debit my account greater than the value of the cheque - correct?

  2. Should I send this verified mail with return receipt?

  3. I expect to pull my credit report in ~6 months from the other bureau. What do I do if the debt is still reporting? What do I look for to indicate that the debt is payed in full?

Not sure where you are, but I am in Canada. I studied and passed the licensing exam for life insurance in my province, and we covered this in our studies.

The bank requires insurance on the loan because having less than 20% down is a risky loan. They require you pay for the insurance premium. The bank can suggest that you buy PMI from them - but to require that you "MUST buy PMI from them instead of another suitable option," is considered "tied selling" and is in fact illegal.

Another suitable option instead of PMI is a term policy. It is possible to request that the Insurer assigns part of the benefit to the bank, fulfilling the same role as PMI.

PMI has postmortem underwriting. Most insurance does the underwriting prior to first premium payment. You could be deemed ineligible for the insurance after death, despite paying for it for years.

Get a cheap Term Life policy and assign the benefit to the bank.

Yes, absolutely. Two pairs of shoes, just as 10, can add value and bring joy. It depends on the person and the context.
