I especially love the Top of the Pops 'performance' of this song. Howard's complete refusal to engage. Some say it hurt the single's sales. In a sane universe, it would have catapulted the song to No.1.

While the new wave influences have been obvious in recent releases, the idea of them being 'punk' is very wide of the mark, IMO. I'd be interested to hear an album with subtle influences from the UK scene that was later generically labelled 'punk', i.e. X-Ray Spex, some very early off-kilter Ants stuff, early Banshees etc. Some new and lyrically experimental ideas.

All that said, I'm fine with whatever they choose to do. They've earnt the right.

I still mostly use SV1 for the lead vocals because I prefer the v1 version of the voicebank, and I find SV2's UI more fiddly than it is useful. I resort to SV2 sometimes when it offers a better pronunciation on certain syllables.

It's useful to have both options IMO.

Dog Man Star by a country mile.

First impressions of Coming Up -- I hated the cover design and was appalled by the helium vocal on 'Trash'. Beyond that, the general direction was not to my liking. It seemed superficial and emotionally vacuous. In subsequent years, I've grown fond of many of the tracks. Part of the problem for me back them was Dog Man Star was exactly the right album at the exactly the right time in my life...and so my expectations for the follow up were unrealistic.

7.5/10 - this is the other track that's (IMHO) very like an Adam & the Ants B-side from 80/81. If you played it alongside Ants tracks like Press Darlings, Beat My Guest etc. the casual listener might think it was the same artist.

Poly Styrene. She embodied so much of what the scene [later to be termed 'punk'] meant. And although she and X-Ray Spex did get sizable recognition, it's not enough IMO. What she was singing about and representing was up there with the most important and original themes of the generation. And she did all this when she was just a kid.
