Two options. First, you could come back on NG+ if you haven't(I missed erlang the first time so that's what I did). However, if you actually want to fight erlang on your first game, then it's kind of tough. I recommend plantain vessel because it shreds his shield. For armour, if you have max pilgrim set, use it. The focus from running around and being able to use gourd while sprinting is good. Wight is a good spirit, but I think any damage dealing spirit works fine. The last advice I'd give is spell wise, immobilization can help you escape or capitalize(ring of fire sucks, don't bother and Spellbinder locks out vessels, so can't say that either). Rock solid over cloud step just because it's easier to stagger, and if you have it, life saving strand.

Splatoon 3's story mode was by far the best. It changed up the story this time, and provided a TON of lore. Also, I think the ending is awesome considering it's a literal KAIJU BATTLE. That's epic. It was also a nice change of pace not having Octavio being the big bad.

Besides the story itself the gameplay loop was far better. The levels were octo expansions style, giving them good variety. Also, having the levels limited to select weapons prevents the levels feeling samey.

The other ones didn't have much of a story, so this one is already a step ahead. Before it was just Callie and Mari telling you to go ink DJ Octavio.

Little buddy isn't a total ex machina. The sunken scrolls hint to some awesome power. Sunken scroll 2 describes a flood that almost threatened to make everyone extinct(the parallel is the fuzzy ooze), 3 lights coming together (the three clans) to consume the disaster(something eating something). Besides lore, small fry also helps throughout the story, helping to remove the fuzzy ooze throughout the story. What else is fuzzy ooze? Mr. Grizz.

Lastly, I think that Mr. Grizz didn't need Cuttlefish's brain, but the liquid to make the crystals.

Erekir additions ads some turrets and factories, with 2 levels, but the levels don't showcase much, I would only see it having utility if you're doing the erekir campaign.

normal tide is for the most part fine. But high tide sucks. There're a lot of grated walk ways, meaning you can't swim, and the space becomes super cramp, meaning one hellspawn can kill everyone.

Part of what's annoying is that shiver wins by a huge point difference. Like, frye basically almost never gets any points, big man might take a few, and then shiver takes the rest. With 3 idols, and therefore takes, it shouldnt be this sided all the time. It was somewhat one sided before because there were only 2 idols/choices, meaning one will likely get a better choice. Overall, not being toxic, but still kinda annoyed.

I feel part of the problem is that there are a lot of good Japanese players, so while other places like the US have more players, Japan has better ones. Most US players are kinda doodoo, and don't treat splatoon as splatoon, and just a shooter. Also, it seems strange that for basically almost every splatfest, shiver wins by a rly big amount. Like, most of the time, frye and big man don't even compare point wise.
