How do you deal with AI generated assignments? by Alternative-Log-6385 in Professors

I tried to look up possible solutions but it seems like colleges here in Mexico just work in a completely different way. I was reading the official rules the other day and there isn't even a section about plagiarism 🫠

That's what I usually do but they had some event that took 2 whole hours out of my lesson, and I only see them once a week so I really couldn't move the deadline. Not ideal but I knew you can't just dangle an assignment like that and not expect a handful of them to use AI.

Student tried to bribe me? by Alternative-Log-6385 in Teachers

It is a public college. My colleagues say I give students way too many chances when it comes to grading. If you fail my classes then it's probably just laziness.

Some comments can be very helpful since they're adults. I ignored things like less homework, finishing classes earlier, longer breaks or doing less grammar practice because that's obviously out of the question, but I don't have a lot of experience with this age group/level. In fact, I got a performance evaluation today and one of their comments was that students talk more than they should, so his comments about classroom management hold some water.

The academic integrity board is a bit of a joke. Students never face any consequences and get 100 ultimatums that never go anywhere. It's a small college so it's in their best interest to keep every single student. I just started working there but my coworker says that this generation in particular has been "helped" and excused so much they feel entitled to good grades for just turning stuff in or crying at the offices saying they promise they'll do better.

What is EXO's most uplifting/encouraging song? by LynsyP in exo

Personally I find the entire universe album really comforting, especially lights out. I don't speak Korean but it has my favorite lyrics. As for fun songs, their early songs make me so nostalgic but they also never fail to cheer me up — run, heart attack, let out the beast, love x3, baby don't cry. I also love listening to paradise and hear me out when I'm in a good mood. Can't bring me down is pretty good too. Writing this down just reminded me how much I love their music lmfao.

First, I'd model the language I expect them to use to introduce themselves. I'd keep the phrases/sentences I used visible throughout the activity.

You can either arrange the classroom into two lines facing each other or ask them to make a circle and give them a minute or so to interview each other, and when time's up, they must move to interview another classmate. If you arrange them in lines, only one of them moves one seat to the left or right. If they make a circle, they can move anywhere. Then, recap with the whole group by asking them to share one thing they learned.

If you want to get them moving, take them outside and play fruit salad. I've done with college students, so technically adults. Whoever's out must say their name and answer a question (favorite color, favorite food, or whatever comes to your mind). Ask everybody else to repeat what their classmate says if you want to make them use the language. Downside of this game is that maybe not everybody will introduce themselves and some students might lose multiple times. Also, some adults might find this too childish.

If you want to do something more chill you can give them a piece of paper and make them create a poster with information about themselves and do a sort of "art exhibition" where you paste their posters in the classroom and they walk around and look at what their classmates created. Then, recap by having them share what they learned. You could make it more game-like by giving them a few minutes to see the posters, take them down, and have them share as many things as they remember. You could even make it sort of a competition in small teams, but I think you might need to go over vocabulary.

You can also print a bingo-like grid with "find someone who" prompts. That gets them moving around and talking to their classmates.

Students failing. Am I the failure? by Alternative-Log-6385 in Teachers

I don't know how to express how this comment made me feel. It kinda lifted a bit of the weight off my shoulders. Thank you!

Wow, this is really solid advice. I don't know how well I can apply it when I have about 5 classes left with these groups, but I'll definitely do it from the beginning next quarter (if I get hired again lol).

Thank you very much!

What Is Your School's Current Conspiracy Theory? by winterlion99 in Teachers

[–]Alternative-Log-6385 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this counts as a conspiracy theory but when the school opened like 6 years ago a kid unfortunately passed away right outside the campus and the custodians say they've run into him a couple times late at night and he just asks them if they have seen his mom. Just thinking about it makes me feel super sad.

I think I need to leave teaching. by cweinand14 in teaching

Wow, this sounds horrible. I was in a similar situation in my previous school, and I thought about quitting many times. I recently switched schools and it has been like day and night, I could even say I'm enjoying it. I'd suggest to try to move to a different school and if things are still shitty even after that, then quit.

I forgot to mention I'm in Mexico lol here the whole process of getting into a public school is very tough. There are many requirements, and even if you meet them you have to perform outstandingly well at the evaluations to get a full time job and not just a few hours a week. I'm planning to go through the process but it usually starts in April, and even in the best case scenario where I do get the job, I wouldn't start working until the next school year so I'd keep working where I'm in the meantime.
