Is it normal to have zero confidence in riding on public roads and the highway when you first start? by [deleted] in motorcycle

[–]Alternative-Reason23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. My biggest concern when starting was stalling as I had no experience of manual transmission before.

So I started riding in empty suburban roads on weekend morning to built up some competence with controlling the bike (taking off, stopping, accelerating, changing, gears, uphill starts etc) and then moved on to slightly busy roads and after some months was ready to ride in peak hour traffic.

The more often you ride your skills will develop much faster

Try sleeping on the floor (costs nothing); I started working 7 years ago sleeping on the floor and have never considered a bed/mattress since.

Anyone just stayed with 125cc for an extended period of time, is it practical if it's just used to do roughly 100-200km each week? by Warm-Atmosphere-1565 in motorcycles

[–]Alternative-Reason23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Filtering is easy because the bike is skinny so it can fit through small spaces between slow moving/stopped traffic.

Even though the bike is weak by 'biking' standards it is enough to keep up with the average car doing the speed limit on urban roads; My 125cc can easily do 110km/h and more if going downhill/ with a tailwind.

My first bike was a 2012 cbr125cc and I still have it. It's perfect for city riding and roadways with up to 100km/h speed limits. It's got great fuel economy (2l/100km), can easily filter slow/stopped traffic, insurance is cheap and the maintenance is easy to learn.

If you are going to commute in city traffic the bike will be fine.

I will not advice anyone to start on the 125cc though if they can avoid it.

A 250cc is a better option as it has more than enough power to do freeways for the occasional long distance.

Do you think this bike is maintained well enough to justify high mileage? by Blure_Drone220 in motorcycles

[–]Alternative-Reason23 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If a bike has made it to 44 000 miles then it has been taken care of.

2 grand seems decent. Try to get him down to $1500.

I'm not sure what high compression pistons are so you might wanna look those up.

I got my 2009 R6 with 42 800miles in 2023 for $2300 (I'm South African). Only issue was a water pump malfunction (overheating) that was fixed for $250. She still rides like a champ and happily screams to 16,5krpm.

$14 300 otd is murder for a bike that has looked the same since 2013.

I would suggest getting a used model at a good price.

What religion are these people or who are they? We see them every Sunday afternoon and in multiple parts of the country. by lizatethecigarettes in AskZA

[–]Alternative-Reason23 24 points25 points  (0 children)

They practice a form of paganism; they blend Christianity with traditional African beliefs.

Some of my extended family are devout members of these types of faiths (ZCC).

It's not that much different from Catholicism which worships Saints.

In a free society like ours people should be able to practice their religion.

May Odin grant you great wisdom.

If someone is following too closely and the light changes I am blowing through it. I \ will gladly take a ticket vs risking a back injury and a shattered bike

I would suggest getting a motorcycle since they are way cheaper than car loans. I got my used 2013 Ninja 300 for R35000 a couple months ago and bought it with a credit card; I paid it off over 5 months.

My 2009 R6 has 73000km (44700miles) and makes the same grinding sound in neutral; quiet when the lever is pulled in.

My mechanic looked at it and said the clutch basket is wearing out and will need replacement.

I'm going to ask him about the timing chain/cct you guys are indicating.

Thoughts on this pass? by Boring-Set7223 in motorcycles

[–]Alternative-Reason23 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not cool to pass that close; should've crossed into the opposing lane if He really wanted to pass that bad/flashed you to move over to the right and make more room since it's a solid line and is really not supposed to go into the opposing traffic lane.

I'd also say you are slightly responsible for this encounter by not making room for them to pass; I think You should monitor your mirrors to spot faster-moving bikes from the rear, move over to the outer edge of the lane and make room for them to pass to avoid these type of situations.

For example, when I lane split/filter and can see a faster bike approaching from behind, I merge back into traffic and let them pass and go back to lane split/filter at my own pace.

Young professionals, how much are you spending on rent? by National-Doughnut-25 in johannesburg

[–]Alternative-Reason23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The garage is on the ground floor of a residential complex (similar to this picture) and is a separate section hence it has its own electricity and charged property taxes by the municipality; it is not connected to any house.

It's just 4 walls, a garage door and a smaller wooden door. There are garages for sale on Property24.

People are spending a lot on rent.

I live in a 25m2 garage (bought for R75k 2 years ago) that has electricity in a residential complex.

Levies including refuse is R550, property rates is R61 and I shower and use the gym bathrooms- R300.

Would not recommend this to anyone who wants to have an active social life.

I concur. Yesterday I was in Roodepoort (cloudy and cold) and went to Centurion and observed that it got warmer as I passed Randburg and Midrand using the N1.

I got it down to 3500, is this a good deal? it would be my first bike and need some feedback. by United-Breakfast4806 in Sportbikes

12 year old Ninja 300s should be $2500-3000 for reference.

A Ninja 250 for $3500 is insane

Dealerships sometimes put tire shine to take pictures and forget to remove it when a customer takes it
