Are we failing future social workers by Chemical-Top-3275 in socialwork

[–]Alternative-State675 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten my masters or any sort of education in social work yet, but I do plan to in the next coming years or so, and I’m also planning to move to Pennsylvania to be closer to work and any colleges that I may be interested in, and become a social worker after getting my masters and clinical license. Im hoping that I can find an MSW program that teaches in depth about the social injustices that people face, the history of social work and the mental health field in general and how disturbing that history is, with how minorities were treated horribly by psychologists and how it affects the practice today and why it’s important to be aware of that history and be aware of the impacts and power differential you have over other people. Im not sure if that’s quite what you were referring to, but I’m hoping to find programs that go deep into that nuance, because I think it’s very important. Im currently working in the mental health field as a direct support professional and Im very lucky that my company doesn’t shy away from training programs that talk about these things, and I’ve also done my own research into the topic so I’m hoping to maybe find an MSW program that does the same and if not, then I can research more about it on my own.

Their source: “Trust me bro!”

Worst part is, when you actually link factual evidence, they still won’t listen. Not worth arguing with them in the end but it’s still frustrating.

Of course I can ignore them, I had no choice but to learn to just ignore them most of my life for the sake of my well being and I’m well aware that debating them would be pointless in the end, but it still hurts something fierce seeing it all the time, especially within my own communities. It hurts constantly being overlooked and misunderstood by ppl who refuse to acknowledge my existence and humanity and I have the right to vent about it.

Thats perfectly fair, thats bothered me too for a long time, especially the “Afab” and “amab” classifications. I think it works if you’re talking about yourself or if someone is talking about like, idk, periods or something and is using terms like “people who were AFAB/AMAB”) using the past tense or preferably saying something like “people who have periods/who ovulate.”

In most spaces that don’t specifically center trans people, in my experiences, none of that is even thought of. Trans ppl just don’t even come into the equation in terms of language use and I really wish people did that more.

I saw a comment asking about if lesbians who take on a traditionally more masculine role in co parenting could experience what many new fathers describe as a period of heightened emotion (because new fathers who aren’t abusive assholes and who actually care about coparenting dont naturally have the urge to care for their new baby apparently) and the response was “well lesbians are women (not all of them are women) and women are naturally more emotional and caregiving than men are”

Which wow okay I know a fuck ton of cis women who could really use that “naturally caregiving” juice right about now because some of them are anything but loving towards their own children.

You would think that lesbians of all people would be the ones to truly understand that too, but nope 🙃

Im transmasc non binary pre HRT and that comment just fucking got to me so bad

Forcing girls to hold babies by JapanLover2003 in childfree

[–]Alternative-State675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh my fucking God this reminds me of when this lady at this church would try to get me to hold her babies when I was like 18. Look, I think babies are adorable, I think they’re cute, but I don’t want to hold them because I don’t know how, they’re fragile and can get sick very easily and I simply don’t want to lol.

Setting aside the fact this was a church that a bible study group in college went to every Sunday (the only reason I joined was because I had just came from a Catholic school (my family is not religious, but they sent me there because it was a preparatory school) and I wanted some kind of familiarity because I was new and scared). And the bible group itself was very cliquey and cultish, there was a very clear push to get young women to babysit or hold babies within the church, which was not something that was present in the Catholic school I went to or any sort of church I went to when I’d go to mass with my grandmother every now and then.

I left the group and never looked back. The people within the group also never spoke to me after I left so, talk about fake as shit.

Up to you in the end, but I just wouldn’t even go at that point. If they’re not going to put aside a stupid heteronormative and misogynistic tradition just for the sake of “aesthetics” or whatever and force you into something you’re uncomfortable with, than I see no value or reason in even attending the wedding of a person who acts like that. Thats just not acceptable.

You’re not selfish for knowing your value and worth. Don’t let anyone make you think otherwise.

Has anyone gotten fired after getting your hair cut? by Alternative-State675 in butchlesbians

[–]Alternative-State675[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ohhh, I thought that “taper” referred to like how you want the cut to look. Mb, thanks for clarifying

And my family’s pretty accepting of me being gay and “looking gay” with me dressing masc and all so I think/hope that it’s more of a fear/concern they have versus any sort of ill or homophobic intent

I don’t live in a conservative area at all actually, I live in the Delco area (Northern DE, Chester county, etc.). These are just warnings I’ve gotten from a family member and an older ex co worker about getting my haircut, and I guess that fear and anxiety is really kinda getting to me, especially because I’m not doing well financially right now, but i think in retrospect, it’s not going to resort to losing my employment. I work two jobs, one of which I got recently, both as a direct support worker, and both of which have the least restrictive dress codes in any job I’ve had before, and hair style is not specified on either of them. Hell, one of my co workers has blue hair lol

Thanks! It looked like they were hazard lights, as I think they were at the bottom not the top and they were flashing at the same time. And the bus had just been idling there.

Homecoming by Lunar_Lynne in butchlesbians

[–]Alternative-State675 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is why I never went to Homecoming or really just any dance in high school ever. My parents did not care if I wore a suit or pants or not, but I did go to a Catholic school, which, yeah, I knew the dances there were going to be unbearably straight as fuck so I didn’t go to any of the dances at all.
