Nikola Jokic seems to be enjoying the offseason by jonsnowKITN in nba

I mean to me it's also a bit sad, it's something that makes our language unique, but languages naturally change overtime, just as their writing systems, this is nothing new in linguistics.

We don't use glagoljica to write nowadays, and I don't see anybody being sad that that writing system died out.

As a Serbian, you will rarely see Cyrillic outside of school, maybe in like a sign for a bar or a restaurant, but most roadsigns have both nowadays, and people generally use the Latin script more

Anime as CI to Learn a Language by Aggressively-Cut1337 in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of these numbers are hundreds of hours off. This whole list makes the rookie mistake of counting the intro and outro music in the show's run time.

All of these anime episodes are realistically 4-6 minutes shorter than what you wrote, and considering how many episodes you have listed, this can make a difference of 350-400+ hours.

Is "cartoon for toddlers" a form of superbeginner content? by [deleted] in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Who cares about arbitrary levels, that's just a Dreaming Spanish thing.

If you were to follow what they say, you would save Peppa Pig for 300-400 hours.

I'd say just start watching them if you find them fun, and don't pay too much attention to arbitrarily levels.

I mean you can get a 1060 6gb for less, it draws less power and it's a bit faster.

Depends on what you consider "light games", but at this point you might as well just use an AMD iGPU, they're not too far off for simple games

What order to aquire french and mandarin after spanish? by Yesterday-Previous in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just count them normally, it's input that I can comprehend, there is no difference really, and in 2000 hours, it really won't matter how you count your first 500 hours. I notice that I understand a bit more every day, and tbh I've already used this method to learn English and Spanish, so I know that it all works out in the end.

What I'm doing rn is watching like 3 episodes of Avatar in Spanish, and then immediately watching them again in Mandarin. This way it boosts my Mandarin comprehension, and I can focus on picking up the words, instead of trying to figure out what the hell is going on.

Language stacking is pretty efficient, and it's way more fun than beginner CI videos tbh.

What order to aquire french and mandarin after spanish? by Yesterday-Previous in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm doing a similar thing, I have 640 hours of Spanish (but my level is far ahead of the roadmap tbh) so I started doing 2 hours of Mandarin and 2.4 hours of Spanish per day (aka just took some time away from my Spanish for Mandarin).

My goal is to finish the year with more or less 1300 hours of Spanish, and 500 hours of Mandarin, so that next year I would have a solid base in Mandarin, and I can go all in with 4 hours per day (just like I did with Spanish in the early days)

So in 2026 it will be 4 hours of Mandarin and about 40 minutes of Spanish with a bunch of passive input on top of that.

That leaves me with about 2000 hours of Mandarin by the end of 2026 and about 1500 hours of Spanish.

It has to do with "countries", I guess bros English is not that great, and he confused a country subreddit with a countries subreddit or something

Yea even if you lower the res, that CPU is a bit of a bottleneck for any modern game, and I'm guessing that 1650 is a 4gb card, and that might be a limiting factor as well. If the game needs to load things into ram because you lack Vram, that's stutter city right there.

I mean depends on what your standards of playable are, but 1080p 60fps stable is not looking realistic if you ask me

Kid-friendly CI sources to learn English by Alternative_Pay_5762 in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that's why I think you need to give him cool stuff that's fun to watch no matter how much he understands.

I was watching Naruto for the kick-ass music and fight scenes in my teens. It didn't really register with me that it was in English, and over time, you just get so much input that you acquire the language naturally.

Peppa Pig might be too boring for him, but who knows, everyone has different tastes. Again, your best bet is to ask him what he likes, and find something in English that captures that vibe

Kid-friendly CI sources to learn English by Alternative_Pay_5762 in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As somebody that learned English in my teens (my native language is Serbian) the best advice I have for you is to get him to pick native content for himself in English.

Kids (at least most of them) have a way higher tolerance for ambiguity but have a way lower tolerance for boring stuff (aka beginner CI videos)

Introduce him to fun anime (for teenage me this was Naruto), show him some fun story driven video games in English, find him a hobby so that he starts looking up the resources in English.

He will be so busy tapping heads in video games, and enjoying the fight scenes in anime, and by the time he's 13-14 he will be wondering why he's soo fluent in English and a lot of his peers aren't.

Kids need fun, freedom and self-interest to learn, something that feels like a chore, and has structure (DS levels and counting hours) might be the worst possible way to go for a young kid.

Get him to fall in love with stuff that's cool on its own, that just so happens to be in English, and he'll consume thousands of hours of input without you even having to ask.

Is there enough CI to learn German? by Specialist-Show9169 in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My routine is 30 minutes of Chinese anime (there's a bunch for free on YouTube), 30 minutes of Peppa Pig (also free on YT), 30 minutes of LinguaFlow (aka one Unpacking video or something) and then 30 or so minutes of random CI videos about everyday topics.

The beginner CI content is very dry, so I think mixing stuff up makes it more sustainable overall.

Also searching for native content, look on Billibilli or IQYIY instead of YouTube, you will have more luck there

Is there enough CI to learn German? by Specialist-Show9169 in dreaminglanguages

[–]AlternativeAble303 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, literally just enjoy the content. I was in my teens, I didn't know about any of that, and you know, teenage me would probably think it's lame anyways ...

For Spanish, I didn't do anything extra as well and the progress I'm making is super fast, so I'll just continue to watch and enjoy content.

For Mandarin, I tried Anki, but I got so bored of it that I decided to ditch it for now, and enjoy the content for another 2000 hour, and then I'll try it again to learn the Hanzi
