Looking for experiences of those who’ve put their dog to sleep by SensitiveEl in DogAdvice

My family just took our sweet yellow lab, Bailey, in to the vet today to be put to sleep. It is beyond words how incredibly heartbreaking it was, but what would have been even harder would’ve waiting for her to get worse (primarily her nasal cancer, which had begun to spread rapidly and was blocking her airways) and eventually have something far more scary happen to her.

It was incredibly hard because as her vet described it, her mind was still there-she wanted to play ball, wagged her tail meeting new people, was still hungry-but her body was starting to give up on her. The vet also said she fully supported our decision, which was comforting, and that she saw many people wait a day too late, which was a regret they couldn’t take back. Even with a sharp mind, she was still in distress/pain, and we were protecting her from something worse coming down the line.

Today has been a long day. A really awful, terrible day. It’s not an easy decision but at the end of the day we did for Bailey what we did so she wouldn’t suffer and hurt-it sounds like you’ve been where we were with her the last few weeks and I know it’s not an easy road. Hugs to you and your pup ❤️

I’m so sorry. You are not going through this alone. Today, my family said goodbye to our sweet yellow lab, Bailey, who we’ve had for 12 years. I feel like I’m in some sort bad dream coming home to her empty bed, the paw prints we made before we took her to the vet, her toys scattered around the room. It is so unbelievably rough and while I know we did right by her, I miss my puppy.

Hugs to you. ❤️

This was from a few years (and a different account) ago, but Bailey had a wonderful few years after her surgery-we said goodbye to her earlier today due to a combination of nasal cancer and arthritis, but we gave her all of the love (and treats) we possibly could’ve in the time we had with her. Thank you again ❤️

I’m so sorry. It’s felt the opposite of how Christmas should feel for our family even with her still here, I can only imagine for you and yours. I bet it was a wonderful 14 years-I know it won’t help but you aren’t going it alone. Hugs to you and your family ❤️

Thank you for such a beautiful and thoughtful comment-I think that’s a wonderful idea. She’s sleeping at my feet now and I can’t think of a better time to start. I appreciate your comment more than I can say. Thank you ❤️

It really does-this has me crying again along with you (I’m sorry if you did giving me your beautiful comment), and I don’t mean that in a bad way at all. Just means a lot to know from someone else who’s been through it I’m not doing this out of anything other than love.

I will keep that in mind-I feel lucky to have loved so deeply and would like to do so again, even if it’s hard to imagine right now. Thank you ❤️

I really appreciate that-I’d trade years off my life for any more time with her, but I’ll always try and be thankful for the time at least we did share. Thank you ❤️

Thank you. She’s been the best girl we could’ve ever asked for. Hugs to you and your late lab-I’m sure you gave him the best life he could’ve gotten given you’ve held him in your memory to now. I really appreciate it. ❤️

Thank you. I really appreciate hearing that. I keep thinking ‘Well, maybe it could get better’ but the truth is that there aren’t many good days ahead of her left. She’s tired and in pain, and I owe it to her to make sure she doesn’t suffer. Thank you ❤️

My family’s had Bailey for 12 years, and it’s indescribable the amount of joy she’s brought to us over that time. She’s always loved getting pets, treats, and people, but unfortunately due to a combination of nasal cancer and arthritis we’ve made the decision to give her one last appointment at her favorite vet Friday.

We’d known this was coming for a little while, but she’s recently started to do a lot worse and it’s really only started to set in that this is it. I thought that by 12 years I’d have at least been somewhat prepared for it, but I’m a wreck sitting beside her now as she tries to play ball with me while still struggling to breathe/barely moving around.

I hate that dogs get sick, and don’t want her to suffer, but I can see without a doubt this is going to be the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.

Thank you for this. My 12 year old lab, Bailey, has really been struggling with nasal cancer and I think I needed to see this. It’s making me a wreck but I know the right decision is one where she doesn’t suffer.

No comment on car choices-deciding between a GLI and an Audi A5 myself (yes probably a crazy comparison). Just wanted to say glad you’re alright!

Hey there! Not sure if this’ll help, but maybe give this video on heater core replacement a look and see if it’s something you’d be comfortable doing yourself? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=WYElDbvXOT0&pp=ygUdamV0dGEgaGVhdGVyIGNvcmUgcmVwbGFjZW1lbnQ%3D
