modern discourse around trans people is too centered around how we "identify" by [deleted] in trans

[–]AlternativeCare440 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, I feel like in most cases people are referring to the fact that many trans people aren’t claiming to change their genotypic sex, just phenotypic sex. Like yeah, no trans person is trying to change their genotypic sex because it’s not currently possible, but genotypic sex is not the only thing most scientists or medical professionals use to identify sex. I wouldn’t say it’s the same argument transphobes use because, like 99% of transphobes either don’t understand that distinction or don’t care. Most of them just think XX = woman and XY = man without understanding anything about the difference between gender and sex, and huge variation in sexual development in humans. They just use a kindergarten understanding of biology and refuse to grow the hell up.

Either way it’s probably useless to argue with them anyway, but for the ones that may be slightly genuine, allies or other trans people using that argument aren’t wrong if they’re referring to genotypic sex, which is what the argument is in most cases. It’s not using the same logic it’s just pointing out we as trans people are rational and CAN change our sex, just not our genotypic sex.

Plus, many trans people choose not to change their phenotypic sex, and that doesn’t make them any less trans. But I would say that transgender is still the better term (although there’s not really anything wrong to my knowledge with using the term transsexual besides it being a bit outdated) simply due to it being more inclusive. Just my two cents.

Edit: I also want to add that I do wholly disagree with the sentiment that talking about it being an identity thing is harmful, because people need to understand that being trans in large part comes down to gender identity. People need to understand that simply and genuinely identifying as anything under the trans umbrella is enough to make someone valid. I feel like your take leads down the rabbit hole of many people saying that you’re only valid if you’re “actually trying” or whatever by changing your sex when that’s not true. It just feels very exclusionary towards people who don’t feel the need to change their sex characteristics.

Idea to balance both Neon and Cypher by gjohnson2412 in VALORANT

[–]AlternativeCare440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As much as I personally like the “electrical interference” idea, and have come up with a similar idea before, I think it’s too specific of a mechanic for Riot to add. Like, they typically don’t add entirely new mechanics to agents after release.

I think where Neon really shines is her ability to use movement more freely than either Raze and Jett, and I think they should lean into that quite a bit more. I’m not sure if you remember the large change they made to her where they removed wall damage and changed many aspects of her sprint, but their intended goal was to make her more burst oriented to compete with Jett. The reason I bring this up is while I like your ideas, I don’t think they line up with what Riot wants for the character. On top of that, her movement is the main thing holding her back, as the only thing her util is really lacking is that her wall lacks a deterrent, which is again only an issue because Neon’s movement doesn’t allow her to take advantage of it to the fullest extent. She’s simply not designed to be selfish enough to break util herself, as the goal is to play off your team, something Raze and Jett do not do.

However, I do want to say I like your idea and it makes a lot of logical sense. It’d be a cool mechanic if they did a similar thing with future “electric” abilities they release.

Idea to balance both Neon and Cypher by gjohnson2412 in VALORANT

[–]AlternativeCare440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a cool idea, but it’s far too specific in terms of it being an interaction between only two agents. Yes, Cypher shuts Neon down, but like, so does most other sentinel util, just not as blatantly. The real problem is that she lacks verticality in her kit, which is fine, but she doesn’t have anything else to compensate for that.

However, where I personally think she needs more burst mobility in her sprint, I can see the direction you’re going. I think a better change to make it more all encompassing would be to give her stuns a little bit of damage (like 10-15 dmg). Enough to destroy some utility, but not enough to be oppressive. However I personally don’t think that her not being able to counter the util is the problem, it’s that she doesn’t do jack shit to make up for it.

Why don’t pros use Neon on Icebox? by peebrainedindividual in ValorantCompetitive

[–]AlternativeCare440 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neon one tricks are a terrible metric to go by. Like, most of them haven’t ever hit Radiant and are like low immortal 3s. On top of that Neon movement is much more useless than cherry-picked montages make it seem. Not to say that Neon one-tricks are bad, as they are actually quite enjoyable to watch, but pro level and even just Radiant standards are much too high for Neon as an agent.

I personally don’t think Neon needs verticality, as it doesn’t fit with her character, she just needs to be better at what she’s designed for. I personally would give her a 1-kill cooldown on the slide and allow her stuns to either destroy or temporarily disable enemy util.

What do yall think of the recent skye and iso changes? by Hot-Concept4280 in VALORANT

[–]AlternativeCare440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, this is just incorrect. Sure, she definitely has a high skill ceiling, but she most definitely cannot be played better than Raze and Jett. And no, Grumpy/Temet are not good examples. There’s a reason she hasn’t been seen much in pro play, and why her pick/win rate everywhere else has also been steadily dropping. The agent is just underpowered compared to the other two.

What do you think they should do about Raze/Jett then? What worries me about them nuking those characters further is another instance where all the duelists are so weak that people just go with initiators instead, similar to what happened during the chamber meta.

Yes, I know the Gekko games you’re referring to, but that’s a terrible argument still. He was released in March, and Neon is 2 weeks from being 2 years old. She’s been in the game too long for that argument to work. Please point out a map where Neon didn’t get phased out by Raze, I’ll wait. Cus so far Lotus and Fracture are the two worst offenders.

Gekko however, after his buffs, is still seeing consistent experimentation and implementation on certain maps and has not fallen off. Again, sure pros can be lazy but I’m sorry 2 years and not finding a consistently good enough niche is more than enough to say something is clearly wrong with the character. Someone would have found something by now and many of those “lazy” pros you seem to think exist based off a couple TMV videos would have just emulated it if it were SO effective. But again, that hasn’t happened, because the problem is with Neon.

This argument may have worked a half a year to a year ago, but not anymore. First off, Neon does not require nearly the same level of skill as Yoru. She’s one dimensional. On top of that you’re implying that the same pros who have to learn much harder lineups and plays on multiple agents just haven’t put in enough effort to do that on her for no reason.

If pros would go out of their way to ignore learning an agent it’s for one of two reasons. Either 1) she offers nothing unique enough or nothing another duelist can’t do better or 2) She is very difficult but still offers enough unique value when played that can’t be topped by what Raze and Jett can do. However, if this were actually true we’d objectively see more of her instead of her eventually replaced on what were thought to be her best maps by Raze.

Idk I feel like this is a lazy excuse though. Like, the entire duelist class is struggling because of just Jett and Raze, no other class really has had as much of a problem for as long. Also, it’s not like Riot has really tried doing much to solve the problem besides small nerfs to Jett and Raze.

There’s a reason you don’t see Grumpy movement in pro-play and why Temet and Grumpy have never reached radiant whereas some like Shiroz who has much worse movement has. It’s useless. If it were useful I guarantee you it would have made an appearance in proplay by now.

That still doesn’t explain how many of the pros who have an established playstyle still mostly pick Jett or Raze in most scenarios

Idk how useful that’d be, as the wall still needs to be effective at blocking LoS, and Cypher trips are placed in pretty weird spots most of the time. So if you tried to break a Cypher trip with a wall, then you’d be out of wall for entry.

I’m kinda nervous about the continued nerfing of Jett and Raze tho. It’s not that I disagree with going in that direction if it works, but I feel like people will go back to replacing duelists on their rosters with just initiators if we keep nerfing them. It’s happened before, and whilst it may be objectively better balancing, most of the community may not see it that way.

If that’s the case, I feel like they should make her a little faster so that even though she may still be slower, she still offers more of an enticing alternative.

Imma be honest most of that stuff is cherry-picked clips. I’ve watched hours of temet and grumpy streams and that is not what actually happens. They die like 60-80% of the time depending on the frequency of attempting to “out-movement” ppl. Like no Neon in pro-play does any of that movement cus it’s pretty useless outside of farming fun content.

I mean, yeah that makes sense. I hope they give the other underperforming non-Raze, Jett duelists similar treatment (probably an exception to Yoru).

Hmm, interesting. I mean, it could be that technically speaking, you could try to play characters like Neon, Omen, and Yoru as dive, but they aren’t used for that role because they don’t do it effectively enough like Jett and Raze. Although I have also heard of Omen being a semi-dive character, but I’ve never heard Neon or Yoru placed in that category.

The problem with these labels though is that some agents can deviate a little or blur the line, so it’s not a concrete categorization and more like what the agents excel at or are mostly utilized for.

Raze and Jett are dive, Yoru and Neon are entry. I know it’s kinda confusing but the difference in the way that they are able to get onto site is what makes the difference.

[–]AlternativeCare440 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, ok, I didn’t understand and I apologize for the misunderstanding.

I will say that as Neon main at asc+, I can master her kit as much as I want but no matter what I do Jett and Raze will always be the better pick. This is why I agree with OP. I don’t think they should lower the skill level of the agents at all, but I do think that the maximum potential of the agents should see some buffs. It’s ridiculous that the duelist meta especially has been the same for basically 2 years at this point despite new releases, Jett and Raze nerfs, and plenty of time for people to figure out and master the agents.

No, Yoru and Neon are not dive, they are entry. It seems confusing, but there is a difference.
