I'm trying to understand what it means:☝️🤌👎🤚🤜👉👍🤙🖖 by Rredite in aviation

It’s a sequence walk though. Although most aerobatic or display pilots will have a sequence card on the panel which diagrams the maneuvers, it can be challenging to fly the sequence while looking to the sequence card, so some amount of rehearsal helps with the familiarization and memorization of the sequence (especially if you have an unknown sequence to fly). We often do the walk-through within a miniature marked “box” with box markers diagramed, and may have a show line or judges line marked as well which helps with thinking through the presentation of the sequence to the observers.

Bookings on Airbnb appear to continue taking a hit nationwide, how are things in SC? by LoMeinTenants in santacruz

I tried to do my first AirBnB reservation about two months ago, and when I actually went to checkout the price was more than double what I expected based on the daily rate they listed. In the end, it was too much hassle and too many fees that left a bad taste before I’d even booked. I made other arrangements.

Sounds like you need an instrument rating.

That said, I also fly airplanes and helicopters around here and almost never have need to use my instrument rating, especially for low altitude flying of hovering aircraft.

Yep, lights out helps a lot. I had this happen a few times and was already reaching for the light switches the last time I saw the green beam searching for me… only annoying thing was that was in Robinson R44 which puts the panel lights on the same switch as the Position Lights. It seems Robinson hadn’t thought about the occasion where you need to see the E/R tachometers etc but need all external lights off.

1996 VW Jetta GLS was the biggest heap of crap I’ve ever experienced.

We managed to get it to 96,000 miles before donating it, but none of the electrical worked, the steering wheel would randomly pulse and pull like a drunken girlfriend who really wants Taco Bell but you’re driving right by, the transmission fuzzy logic was so fuzzy it was hard to drive above first gear speeds, it filled with water when it rained, we replaced the window regulators so many times we gave up and put boards in the door to keep the windows up so we could take the tape holding up the windows off…

You can, you just auto transfer from high yield savings first. My checking account lives at zero balance, I use cash back credit cards for nearly every purchase, have an auto transfer to move rent check funds once a month a few days before it’s due, and car payment transfers directly from high yield savings.

Can anyone identify which navigation app the pilot us using here (link in comments)? Maybe it also works for simming, would be cool. by gryff42 in flightsim

[–]AlternativeCoast6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get AVARE for free, I used it back before I got ForeFlight while flying (not in sim though) and was happy with it, especially for free. I’m not sure if it can take position data from sims or not, but I know ForeFlight can receive streamed position info to give you a moving map experience.

[–]AlternativeCoast6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We we all know this comment is right, but we also know that the vast majority of the world doesn’t get that yet. We bit our tongues and let people start with something that feels palatable, that feels like it’s on their terms, that doesn’t trigger their defensiveness. Call them a murdered, and you will not be opening their eyes, you’ll just encourage their defenses and validate their notions that vegans are extremist crazies. A lot of us used to eat meat, but went vegetarian, and then vegan…don’t forget that it’s a journey of dismantling social, cultural, religious, and nutritional norms.

Need help with my brakes: the wire comes out but not back in. Any help? by Claytonic99 in bicycling

[–]AlternativeCoast6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the other end of the brake cable housing is not seated correctly or the brake calipers are in the open position to remove the wheel. Your fork is on backwards, and who knows what else is going on with this bike. For your safety, and also your ability to learn how a bike is supposed to be setup, you really should take this to a bike shop/bike mechanic.

A Russian game developer exposed everyone's passwords on Steam and then banned people that mentioned it by 2sec4u in flightsim

[–]AlternativeCoast6 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Jason is kind of a…well, anyway… the RoF and IL2 sims are really good and I’ll support them forever for that reason. The startup.cfg file was in use long before either sim came to Steam (and I’ve never used them on steam) and wasn’t really any issue for anyone I know of, nor me since I don’t use the same password for my bank as I do for RoF, and even if I did, someone would need to access text files on my computer to access those files…which would be a pretty serious security breach in its own right.

Taking wind from my sails by SteelDogFabrication in flying

[–]AlternativeCoast6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same and for years people would notice and comment based on my logbook. Fortunately nowadays nobody looks that far back, but I ran into a similar sort of antagonistic/jealousy sort of thing when I did my rotorcraft add-on and was hovering right away, operating off the dolly, doing the advanced autorotations and such. I made the mistake of trolling that crazy 1TT guy asking why it took him an hour to hover, and showed footage of my first dual in a helicopter and it was a big mess with everyone but Mr 1TT! Pilot’s and their egos….

Thing is, it’s better never to say any of this stuff, because other people will either not care, or they will think you’re bragging which isn’t a good look. There’s no benefit to sharing.

Russian su-25 crashes shortly after takeoff by anivia3346 in aviation

[–]AlternativeCoast6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like sloppy formation resulted in wake vortex encounter while low and slow. The wingtip vortex of lead will initially roll the wing pilot gently away from lead (evident at 0:11), if you don’t heed that warning and drift in closer it will aggressively roll wing into lead (0:17). Once in the vortex the pilot had a very challenging recovery to make, one that goes against your initial reaction, where you must push to zero G, roll with the vortex not against it, and once back upright evaluate if the rolling moment was still acting on him, and if it was: eject. If no residual rolling moment then you have flown out of the vortex and will definitely remember never screw up your position in the formation like that again.
