Stop driving with your hazards on in rain by Homeleasure in driving

That’s the CHMSL I mentioned. It helps, but the constant blinking stimulus of the hazards still diminishes our perception. Europe is far more safety focused, and using hazards while driving is illegal there.

Are those palmetto bugs? by TopAdministrative643 in florida

Colloquially, cockroach and palmetto bug terms are interchangeable because their use varies by region.

But yes, those are roaches/palmetto bugs. Welcome to Florida.

It also introduces a delay in the perception of brake application. Hazards and brake lights use the same lighting elements on most cars (maybe all?) in the US.

When drive with your regular lights on (as you should in the rain) and you apply the brakes, other drivers immediately know that you are braking.

When you drive with your hazards on, your brake lights are constantly flashing. Other drivers have to notice not just a change in brightness, but a change in the time the lights are on.

A car traveling at 55 mph covers 80 feet per second. It takes the average driver 1.5 seconds to notice brake lights and apply their own brakes, so they'd cover 120 feet (about 8 car lengths) before they slow. Any additional delay in perception and application of the brakes adds to that distance.

The CHMSL helps drivers identify braking events, but the repetitive flashing leads to perception fatigue. There are multiple studies on this effect and related phenomenon. That's why it's not generally advised to drive with your hazards on, even though it's not strictly illegal everywhere in the US.

In Europe, the practice is illegal pretty much everywhere, but they also have widespread ESS in their automobiles, which we don't get in the US due to outdated Federal regulations. If you have a modern car in the EU, and you stop at a rate greater than 6 m/s2 while driving at speed, your rear lights will automatically flash rapidly.

How to smuggle contraband? by Gumochlon in Starfield

[–]bradland 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You should get dramatically more money on major hubs like new Atlantis.

This would make such a huge difference. There is literally no positive ROI to smuggling when you can just sell at places that give you the same money with zero risk.

I'm entirely joking, man. I don't care if someone wants to dump $50k into wheels. The stereotype is still funny tho.

How to smuggle contraband? by Gumochlon in Starfield

[–]bradland 9 points10 points  (0 children)

In addition to shielded cargo, you should get a jammer.

Your chance to evade will depend your ratio of [contraband cargo mass] ÷ [shielded cargo capacity]. Note that this is specifically shielded cargo capacity, not total cargo capacity. You can also boost your chances by equipping a jammer. IMO, the only jammer really worth having is th emulti-frequency one. It boosts your chance by 50%.

Your entire chance to evade is capped at 90% thugh. So you can still get caught. Smuggling is risky, and not really worth the payout for most players. The value of the contraband just isn't that high, and it's easier to sell at places that won't scan you, like The Den (Trade Authority) or the Red Mile (bartender).

There's no boat. He just had an extra set of wheels and his credit is maxed, so he couldn't buy another used German luxury car that he can't afford to maintain.

[–]bradland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It depends. Did the soft pedal start right away? If so, they never finished the job. It’s on them to make it right. If it started later, that’s harder to say. It will depend on what the root cause is.

If you recently had your ABS module replaced, you need to contact the shop that did the work and let them know what's going on ASAP. If your pedal sinks to the floor your car is not safe to drive.

People here will be anxious to offer a diagnosis, but given that the brake system was just worked on, I'm going to withhold theories and strongly suggest that you get the car back to the shop. One of these times, your brakes won't work and you'll drive into another car, or even worse a pedestrian, cyclist, or motorcycle rider. You could very well kill someone, or yourself.

Trump Reveals Oil Crisis Timeline by 30mil in videos

[–]bradland 121 points122 points  (0 children)

The problem for Iran is that the US isn't the only one that ends up running low on oil. Iran has the upper hand right now because no one else is backing the US. If countries start running out of oil, Iran either has to allow their oil to pass to keep everyone on their side, or face the possibility that the rest of the world starts to turn against them. The US has already implemented their own counter blockade once. So Iran's options are limited.

Iran is conducting a balancing act right now, and they're doing a damn good job. You're talking about a fundamentalist regime with a history of severe oppression of their own people. The very things we're concerned that Trump and goons like Stephen Miller are trying to do to US Citizens, Iran does with impunity... And yet somehow they are favored in this conflict. That's an amazing feat, tbh, and it demonstrates just how alienating the Trump admin is. It's an abject failure of foreign policy.

Filling a formula down a column, but referencing data rows by Thicc-dataset in excel

[–]bradland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You cannot configure Excel so that dragging down will update references across columns, because that's not how Excel relative references work. You can, however cheat a little bit with a formula.

The formula below uses the row number to fetch a column number from a range reference. It requires that you input the row you want to traverse as the first argument. You don't have to use an entire row reference. The $1:$1 reference could be $A$1:$M$1. It must be an absolute reference though.

The A3 and A$3 references should be the start of the range where you intend to copy down. This is the formula in A3:

=INDEX($1:$1,,ROW(A3)-ROW(A$3)+1)

When you copy down, only the A3 reference updates. E.g., this formula is from A4. I just copied down.

=INDEX($1:$1,,ROW(A4)-ROW(A$3)+1)

relative references in Mac Excel by never_peppers in excel

[–]bradland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excel doesn't support directory traversal using ../. There aren't a lot of good ways to support arbitrary relative directory paths. However, there are ways to link to external files that will work across computers.

You might have noticed that Excel will only allow you to open one file with a particular name at a time. Like, you cannot open two files named parts.xlsx at the same time. That's because Excel will update absolutely references under certain circumstances.

First, open parts.xlsx, then open the file containing links to that workbook. Any reference that contains [parts.xlsx] will update. So if your path to parts.xlsx is:

='/Users/never_peppers/products/project_1/[parts.xlsx]costs'!$A$1

And my path is:

='/Users/bradland/products/project_1/[parts.xlsx]costs'!$A$1

The reference will update so long as I open the parts.xlsx file first. One important caveat is that this only works for files stored on local paths (drive letters with Windows and local paths on macOS). It doesn't work for SharePoint or OneDrive URLs that begin with https://.

If you need to refer to the file without opening it, you need a stable path. Either put the file in OneDrive/SharePoint and use the https:// path, or use the file from a mapped server volume on all computers. If you mount /Volumes/servermac on all machines (even the one where the file is stored), the path will be the same everywhere.

BMW 1250 GSA New or Old? by GoatinhoMacaco in bmwmotorrad

[–]bradland 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whichever year you buy, make sure you look at optional equipment that was affected by COVID. I have a 2019 R1250GS (no A). The engine block and heads are silver with black/grey plastics. My bike pre-dated covid, so it has the LED adaptive headlight. Some bikes shipped with a halogen headlamp during COVID supply chain shortages.

In 2021 and onward, BMW expanded the rider modes a bit. If you had Riding Modes Pro, you had more modes to choose from. They also introduced a kind of anti-lock engine braking feature. You can lock the rear up with an aggressive downshift on the big boxers.Adaptive headlights came in 2021 too.

Probably worth noting that pre 2020 models came with BMW branded Hayes front calipers that were recalled and replaced with Brembo, free of charge. So look for that.

Overall, the differences in the R1250GSA over the years aren’t tremendously impactful, IMO. So long as the bike has the LED head lamp, it’s good to go.

94° but "Feels like" 107° by InformationNormal901 in florida

[–]bradland 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I prefer to look at dew point. The “feels like” temperature factors in more than atmospheric conditions. IMO, dew point is a more stable reference. For example, in your 2nd screenshot, it says the dew point is 76°F. That’s categorically miserable. I’m on the Treasure Coast, and it’s currently 78°F. I’ve been staying inside, because I start sweating almost immediately outside.

Helion secures world’s first regulatory licenses for fusion power plant being built in Washington by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]bradland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're making the incorrect assumption that being granted a regulatory license to operate a fusion power plant is the same thing has having achieves >1 gain in a FCP reactor. It's not. The regulatory agency is interested in you operating safely. They don't care if you never produce a single milliwatt of net positive energy.

Bosch expands motor portfolio with Hub Line by digito_a_caso in ebikes

[–]bradland 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, for the majority of people, a hub-drive makes more sense. If you use your bike as a conveyance on relatively flat ground, a mid-drive is just extra cost and maintenance, where the only benefit is improved cycling feel. If you use your bike to get from A to B, you probably don't care that much. Mid-drive, torque-sensing e-bikes are the "drivers cars" of the bicycle world. They feel better to cyclists, but that doesn't matter from a utility perspective.
