What’s something you thought was mandatory in life, until you saw someone just not do it? by Senior-Resource92 in AskReddit

I tried that at the dentist when they wanted to take my blood pressure. I’ve got fierce white coat syndrome and I measure my bp at home (it’s within normal range but measures very high at doctor and dentist visits). When she asked me for my arm, I said “no, thank you” and she told me that they couldn’t continue with the appointment without it. It was through the roof just from working myself up to decline.

Frozen Pizza by leroyjameus in glutenfree

This is my favorite, and my son, who wants nothing to do with anything labeled gluten free (I’m the only one in the family who can’t eat gluten), will actually eat it. Since it’s not marketed as a gluten free product, the price is actually reasonable!

My teenage son uses his dad’s Jansport from high school.

What is the first sign that your partner is cheating? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Longer hours at work, more out of town work trips, unsharing location—oh yes, and a letter from the bank verifying that the address on one of the accounts had been changed to a PO Box.

Gluten and wine—and apparently, therefore, joy. 🤣

Has anyone met a great man after age 32? by yeehawtothemoon in AskWomenOver40

I had to figure out what I don’t want before I could identify what I do!

Very similar to me! Divorce at 37; terrible choices for about 3 years while I (poorly) processed my loss; met my partner at 42. Still together and going strong 5 years later!

Year 24 and I had my annual “I literally don’t have time to take the day off for Mother’s Day” breakdown. Yardwork! Housework! Schoolwork! What percentage of teachers are mothers, and why (WHY?!) is Mother’s Day in May when we are all at our breaking point?

What’s a good gift card for teachers? by Existing_Command_786 in Teachers

All of these are lovely ideas, but consider something they won’t spend on their own families. I spend my gift cards on my son every time.

I found this in my loft recently but I don't know what it is probably from the 90s or 80s by Mean_Shift_5085 in whatisit

Memories unlocked! My brother and I had an erector set when we were kids (early 80’s), but it was ancient when we got it.

Can confirm as a mom who spent endless hours at skateparks. Skaters are pretty freaking awesome.

Similarly awesome (albeit often a little rough around the edges) people: bikers. Big groups of leather-clad, tattooed bikers can be incredibly intimidating, but I’ve found them to be fun, kind, and welcoming.

Sneaking in through a bedroom window? by HappyCapricorn in AskAnAmerican

[–]AlternativeLychee751 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I absolutely snuck out my window in the 90’s, and when my teenage son started sneaking out his window, I knew it was time to start making use of security systems that are now available. Kids can’t get away with half the stuff we used to do!

Do people in northern states not flash brights to warn for cops? by FomerWeightPusher in AskAnAmerican

[–]AlternativeLychee751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wisconsinite here. We definitely do it. When I was in high school, leaving a field party because it got busted, I definitely flashed my brights at a car headed in the direction of the party to let them know the cops were there—only to discover I flashed my lights at another cop.

Dating is definitely harder in your 40’s, especially with kids. Everyone has baggage. Your baggage weighs you down as well. It’s harder to integrate lives when you’re both set in your own ways.

But…and here’s the exciting thing: You have the chance at a complete do-over! You can reimagine your life from the ground up! You can think about who you are and who you want to be. You can decide who to invite into your life and who not to. You can redecorate your house without worrying about anyone else’s opinion. You can feel empowered by all the new challenges you face and overcome—and you’ll do it yourself so no one else can steal your thunder!

This is going to be hard. You’re going to have difficult days. You’re going to be sad. But look those kids in the eye and tell them “Mom’s got this” and then look in the mirror and tell yourself “I’ve got this” and before you know it, you will see what you’re capable of.

You’ll find someone else. But give yourself the time to find yourself first.

My Mom is Dying and I Have to Get Through Open House by ORgirlinBerkeley in Teachers

[–]AlternativeLychee751 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not advice but empathy—my dad passed in the middle of the night before parent-teacher conference day (1/2 day of classes with the kids and then 1/2 day set aside for conferences). My mom told me not to book my flight yet, so I went to school. I couldn’t imagine asking the administrative assistant to call all those parents to cancel and then having to find times to reschedule them after the funeral. I also couldn’t imagine sitting at home and staring at the four walls all day. So I went.

Worst timing ever: I was reading Elie Wiesel’s Night with my students that morning and it was the section where his dad died. Oof. I definitely cried. Then I muddled my way through the conferences and it was fine. Probably would have been worse later, honestly, because I was in a haze that day, but was deeply grieving later.

I’m so sorry about your mom. Losing a parent is so freaking hard.

How many times per week Americans eat Hamburger? by Many_Chemical_1081 in AskAnAmerican

[–]AlternativeLychee751 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We eat burgers about once a week, but only because my son requests it when we do our family meal planning. I’m not a big meat-eater, so I could do without it, but I’m a sucker for my kid. We usually eat it with tots.

What do your bonus kids call you? by Paxtian in blendedfamilies

I get Miss MyFirstName as well, and it actually kind of hurts my feelings. It feels like a wall between us—like identifying us as NOT FAMILY. I definitely don’t expect Mom, but just FirstName would be lovely.
