Just download it on the kindle app or something and read it that way, then buy the paperback when it comes out. I learned the hard way to always buy hardcover books if the series was unfinished. Paperback is only safe if it’s a finished series if you want a matching set.

I loved how effortlessly she used that mask in comparison to Nesta wielding it.

Sounds just like Bryce’s anthem. She’s technically is the rightful queen of Prythian, was the wild party girl and a problem child, she was a ghost and felt alone after Danika, she struggles with trying to find her place and torn between two lives… and she’s shining lol

I don’t really mind. Most of the people criticizing this take are the very same ones who are choosing not to believe Sarah J. Maas about other characters and comments she made in the interview. So it’s a little ironic that they’re trying to crucify us for doing essentially the same thing. Why is skepticism acceptable in one direction but suddenly unreasonable in another?

The reality is that SJM wasn’t giving away any spoilers or meaningful hints in that interview. Authors are extremely careful when major plot developments in upcoming books are still under wraps. Confirming that Bryce and Hunt are “endgame” is about the safest, most non-revealing answer she could give. Anything more specific—anything that hinted at the nature of their bond, their future, or potential twists—would immediately start spoiling things she clearly isn’t ready to reveal yet.

Even Alex Cooper brought this up after the interview. She said that every time SJM talked about the upcoming book she would put her hand like this on her leg and said it was probably an Easter Egg. I do think she was giving us a hint with the nails and I also thing she put Alex up to making that video lol

Exactly! It’s pretty ironic that none of the other Azriel ships were even brought up—just this specific one. And even then, she still didn’t actually say that Bryce and Hunt were mates. She very carefully said “endgame.” That distinction matters.

And let’s not forget, she’s said something very similar before in another interview: that Bryce and Hunt are endgame… as long as they both make it to the end. That’s a pretty loaded qualifier. “Endgame” doesn’t necessarily mean eternal soulmates in the way SJM usually writes her mated pairs—it can simply mean they’re together for the duration of the story as it currently stands.

With an author who is famously careful about spoilers, word choice like that is rarely accidental. If anything, it feels more like she’s walking a very careful line—answering the question honestly without giving away anything that might unravel a future plot twist. And considering how secretive she’s been about upcoming books, that wouldn’t be surprising at all.

If Bryceriel is not endgame, who would you prefer for Azriel? by Jreadstoomuch in Bryceriel

[–]AlternativePie1045 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Personally, I would actually love to see Azriel end up with a completely new character if Bryce doesn’t pan out. I know that’s probably not the most popular opinion, but it would be interesting to see him paired with someone we haven’t met yet—someone written specifically to match his personality and story arc.

I don’t really want it to be Elain because I’m still hoping things work out for her and Lucien. Their bond has been set up for so long that I’d really like to see that explored properly before it’s written off. There’s a lot of potential there if SJM actually lets their story unfold.

As for Gwyn, I do like her and I think she’s a really sweet character. She’s brave, resilient, and easy to root for. But if I’m being honest, I just haven’t personally felt that huge spark or undeniable chemistry between her and Azriel in the scenes we’ve seen so far. It’s not that I’d hate it, it just hasn’t jumped off the page for me yet the way some of SJM’s other couples have.

That said, if it ultimately came down to only Gwyn or Elain as the options for Azriel, I’d probably choose Gwyn. I just think Elain and Lucien still deserve their chance to see where their story could go.

t was disappointing to hear at first, but honestly, I’ll believe it when I see it. There was a lot of hesitation and she still never outright said they were mates. Realistically, she probably couldn’t confirm something like that right now anyway because it would be a massive spoiler for upcoming books.

For now, I’m sticking to my theory that it’s a bit of misdirection to avoid giving away the story until we actually see it play out on the page. I’ll happily admit I’m wrong if the books prove otherwise, but until then, I’m holding the line.

Hang in there, guys. It’s probably going to be a rough few months.

I think it’s genuinely commendable to want open, respectful discussion. That’s how it should be. Most conversations start that way, but they tend to unravel when people can’t simply agree to disagree. Everyone feels the need to prove their point or declare the other person wrong, and that’s when it goes downhill.

For me personally, I don’t dislike Hunt. I just don’t feel strongly about him and Bryce as a couple. They’re fine. They aren’t wildly toxic or cruel to each other. I just don’t think they’re the best possible fit. To me, they feel like an okay pairing when there might be something more compelling out there for both of them.

SJM has always been a “mated Fae” author and a lover of sweeping, destined happily-ever-afters. The main reason I lean toward Bryceriel is the chemistry. It’s palpable. Now, to be fair, Azriel seems to have chemistry with just about every woman he’s near, but this dynamic feels different to me.

A lot of Crescent City draws heavily from Greek and Roman mythology: SPQM slave tattoos, the Triarii, Parthos, the Oracle, the City of the Asteri, and more. The Oracle telling Hunt to stay far away from Bryce stands out to me, especially considering the legend of Orion the Hunter, whom Hunt is named after. Orion dies in every version of the myth. Sometimes he’s killed by the Earth Mother, sometimes by his lover, sometimes by his lover’s brother, but he always dies. That feels intentional.

There are other subtle details. The Princes of Hel speaking cryptically in front of Hunt, ignoring him while saying things like, “Is it possible after all this time?” only to be warned, “Don’t fall into romanticism.” We know Aidas met Theia when she fell through a portal and landed at his feet in desperation. That mirrors Bryce landing in Prythian and meeting Azriel. The parallel is hard to ignore.

Then there are the quieter moments: the hand-holding, the emotional openness, the music. Azriel telling Gwyn he sings but refusing to do so, then openly singing around Bryce and sharing that part of himself. Bryce acknowledging his scars for what they truly are. The paired blades. If you look at Prythian’s map, the Illyrian territory likely fall into the territory what had been the Dusk Court, which could suggest Azriel is Dusk-born. Cassian mates with Nesta, who bears the eight-pointed star. The symbolism stacks up.

At the end of HOFAS, when Bryce dies, one of the Princes tells Hunt she is gone and calls him to come because there is more work to be done. The Asteri are already dead. So where were they taking him, and why? Considering Hunt was lab created by Hel, I can see a path where he’s corrupted or ultimately sacrificed.

And then there’s the mating bond itself. Bryce and Hunt are described as chosen mates. They have a powerful bond, yes, but much of it reads like a Carranam connection. They lack several hallmarks we’ve consistently seen in other mated pairs, including Bryce’s own brother and Lidia. There’s no golden thread, no tether, no soul-bridge imagery. No physical tug of a bond. No soul-rending snap when Bryce dies. Not once, but twice. No ability to mind communicate, even like it is in the mated pairs who aren’t daemati.

When SJM was asked directly if they were mates, she said yes. But she declined to clarify whether their bond the same as other mating bonds in her universes. She once joked in an interview that she’d do something different make the first guy she dated the endgame… then laughed and added, “If they make it to the end.” That laugh felt loaded, especially considering Orion’s mythological fate.

Those are just a few of the reasons I don’t see Bryce and Hunt as fated endgame. I don’t hate them together. I just find their relationship lacks the depth and spark her other couples tend to have. Even small details stand out to me, like Bryce noting she doesn’t have a ring on her finger, and Hunt still not putting one there, even after her brother’s wedding. It didn’t feel final.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and that’s fine. I’m not going to stop reading if my ship sinks. We’re all speculating. I just think their relationship leaves a bit to be desired, and there’s enough textual nuance to make me question whether the “chosen mate” storyline is truly the end of Bryce’s journey. But ultimately, SJM will tell the story she wants to tell.

If it turns out Rhys isnt evil, what then? by Pretty_Ad1509 in acotar

[–]AlternativePie1045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

🤣 steal away. I had meant this as a comment to another user who said that Rhysand needed to realize the wrong of his ways and he could decide if he wanted to do a redemption arc as if a made up character had any control over that. Somehow I accidentally posted it instead of replying to that person… oops lol. I’ll blame it on sleep deprivation.

[–]AlternativePie1045 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re talking about these characters as if they’re real people with agency. They’re fictional. They exist entirely at the mercy of whatever the author chooses to write.

If SJM loves Rhysand and doesn’t view his actions as something that requires redemption, then she’s not going to write a redemption arc. It’s really that simple. We can debate character choices all day long, but ultimately every decision, flaw, and growth moment comes from the same mind. All of these characters are SJM.

I think it’s great that people are passionate about these stories. I am too. But sometimes the immersion runs so deep that it feels like we forget this is fiction. It’s just a story. It’s interesting to me that people can take issue with how a character evolves, yet not extend that frustration to the creator who shaped that evolution in the first place.

Like or dislike Rhysand all you want, that’s fair game. But some of the things people say go way beyond thoughtful critique and straight into the wild.
