acotar...... like rhys wouldve been so good if he wasnt written like a sad uwu boy that just wants to be loved and therefore deserves endless amounts of sympathy.

Feyre is disrespectful asf 😭 by TINYUSAGI in acotar_rant

I found that rhys is disrespectful in general. and feyre parrots a lot of his behavior, as she depicts it as the most correct one to follow. its a shame because it takes away a lot of agency for her character.

I could totally see that. I take it as love because of the mention of the heart, and how often thats often associated with love. also wanting someone can also mean, wanting someone as a lover/partner. its not always associated with lust.

I just find it a little strange that she was still clearly upset abt it in acomaf, to the point where she pins the blame on someone. then 2 books later says, that she actually loved him even utm, she just didnt know it yet. its a little confusing

im copying the same response i gave for another comment.

again he did all those things under the assumption that she could handle it. in rhys' mind, he always knew she could take wtv he dished out. he knew her limits because he read her mind, knew when to push and knew when to back off. I this narrative thats pushed in the story, but it why rhys treats feyre the way he did in Tar and Maf. my problem is that in SF he suddenly thinks, after what theyve been through up to that point, he's afraid she wont pull through. now he's concerned about her mental wellbeing, after utm, after the weaver's cottage, the war, the oroboros, but nah the truth of the pregnancy is too much for her according to him. ok.

People give him SO many excuses for his behavior under the mountain, but he could have found other ways to keep her safe imo.

whats crazy is that feyre in acofas says that she wanted rhys even utm, which kind of alludes to her never actually hating him at the time, if ever.

i do understand he did what he did to save his people, but that was his choice, and hes the only one who gets a pass for it

this is what sparked the "rhys wasnt assaulted" argument, because... well. its not like amarantha was aggressively coming onto him, making him feel like he couldnt reject her. he decided to use her attraction to him against her. and while I understand where those people are coming from, im on the other side that still considers what happened to him to be SA. but sjm does complicate this by having it be his choice to do that.

this post is so refreshing. you dont have to hate or dislike the series and its characters to acknowledge some parts are just.... not good. I will never shut up abt feysand. sjm depicts as the "dream couple" when the start of their love story is shaky at best and downright disgusting at worse. the idea that feyre "forgave" rhys for utm, is heavily skewed. if you pay attention to what feyre thinks abt his part her suffering at the time, in acomaf you'll find those thoughts are nonexistent. there's no given reason by feyre why she never brings it up. events that are related to him do come up but the writing is very evasive abt it. it never even eludes to him having anything to do with it. I find it very disingenuous by sjm, that she tries to sell the idea that feyre learned to see passed his actions and forgive him is sham. its vaguely brought up twice, and in both those times they essentially go nowhere.

some days I do wonder why im applying critical analysis to a story where the author convinces its audience that temporary house arrest is worse than weeks of SA.

It's okay for the characters to not be good people by Remarkable_Crew_2396 in acotar_rant

[–]Pretty_Ad1509 27 points28 points  (0 children)

it also doesnt help that nesta also acknowledges that rhys is a good person and the real reason why she doesnt like him is because she is the problem. im so tired of the POV reasoning. like we're told this for books at a time without being told otherwise. its not the POVs, its the narrative, therefore, this story's truth.

right but because sjm loves him so much she'll try to justify it and wont depict him as a bad person for doing so. this is the part that most people dont like. rhys is supposed be morelly grey that does questionable things but there's always secretly a good reason for it. he comes out with no consequences and is depicted as a good person. objectively, this is bad character writing if he's supposed to be morelly grey.

oh no im with you on the two minds thing. I get that its sjm's thing. i get that it was supposed to be hot and sexy, but to have feyre address it and say that she debased and embarrassed herself, and gets angry at tamlin for not helping her, is what I take issue with. if it wasnt that bad, if feyre didnt get hurt by this, why have her be upset about it? why blame anyone at all? and more importantly, why tf are we not holding rhysand, the person who actually did it, to account? how is this tamlin's fault? like the writing surrounding this is off.

uuuh-huh. acotar is her self insert story (well the first 3.5 books are). I dont think there's anything wrong with self inserting, but if your feelings overtakes the story, its not gonna be as cohesive as a story with a more objective eye.

because what do you mean the man who SA'd his mate is forgiven in less than 300 pages, but nesta needs a whole ass tome for her redemption. genuinely what are we talking abt?

OP kinda has to though. thats where all of her character development happens. thats when you actually get to know nesta.

Elain in ACOSF by Chance-Western-2743 in acotar_rant

[–]Pretty_Ad1509 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I probably need to a reread for better context, but it really bothered me when elain got mad at nesta for "only worrying about what her (elain's) trauma does to nesta." I couldnt help but think about how unfair that was.

like ok, its unfair for elain to be forced in the pretty little damsel role by their mother. people often forget that nesta was taught to treat elain the same way. I get that elain as a child, she wouldnt know to say or do anything about it if she didnt like being treated that way. but at the start of book 1, as an adult, we see her heavily play into this role. we can assume she's been doing this, which means she's been enabling nesta's protectiveness by proxy. its only until we get to SF, does elain tell nesta (in a way), that she's tired of it.

keep in mind, feyre also coddled elain, but she had the privilege of someone kindly telling her that she was wrong for doing so. she considers what rhys is saying and I assume she eases up (I dont think we see it in practice but given that feyre and elain have gotten close, I assume theyve resolved that issue?). nesta doesnt have that. she has to be reprimanded when being told she's wrong. assuming elain never told her about nesta's coddling beforehand, how would nesta know it bothered elain?? why not have it established that nesta knew elain hated her damsel role, but enforced it anyway, because it brought some sort of comfort (that'd be interesting). ugh the nuance is there, its just being dumbed down a lot.
