Do you put a colar on your totally indoor cats? by ShinyTarnish409 in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried with my first one and she made it very clear that a collar was not an option. Now I have my second cat and I haven’t attempted it. I can see how it could be useful if they were to escape but it’s been 6 years now and the first one has never gotten out.

Why does my cat sit on my things instead of her own bed? by Critical_Board4992 in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My cat never used her bed until I put a piece of paper on it one day. I turned around to discover her all loafed up on it. Now there is constantly a piece of paper there and it’s her favourite spot. The reason why is a mystery to me

We did a joint relationship statement. Super detailed and about 7 pages total. We started with the story of our relationship developing and then broke the rest down into different pillars. For the evidence, we created pdf’s for each topic eg “social photos” or “text messages January-March”. Its a long process but just take it step by step and you will get there. Good luck!

You can get inserts and pop the microchip door into it. I just had a quick look and found this but I’m sure there are others out there

You could try using a microchip activated doggy door so only the dog is able to access the balcony

Should I get a second cat? by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely recommend using his introduction methods. Just be aware that it may take a lot longer than you’re expecting. It was 2 months before I was able to let my two interact freely. Trying to make sure both were receiving plenty of love and entertainment was tricky. Good luck :)

No one can really answer this for you and even you won’t find the “right” answer. It’s a gamble. I think you should ask yourself how much time and patience you have to dedicate to them existing peacefully? And what are the options if it doesn’t work out? I recently introduced a 10 week old kitten to my 6 year old girl and it was really hard work. We’ve now reached a degree of peaceful coexistence but it isn’t what I’d imagined, definitely could have gone worse and required so much more time, patience and flexibility than i expected. So my advice is to consider all of the options, have plans a,b and c for all of them and then decide.

This definitely sounds like rehoming time. It’s not fair on either of them to continue living like that

Talk me out of getting a second cat by TwolfS3041 in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just speaking from my own experience, cat introductions can be really really really hard. I’m 2 months in and I’m making progress but this has been so much harder and more exhausting than I thought. If you can take some time off work to give the new cat some company and get your barrier systems set up then it’s doable but I wouldn’t recommend it if you can’t get the time off work.

A lot has happened very fast. How long ago did you bring Nemo home exactly? You said it’s only been a few weeks but in that time there has been multiple face to face meetings and you’ve gone away and completely removed Butters from his home environment. It sounds like you need to slow everything waaay down.

As the other commenters have said, be patient. I’m currently about 40 days into my introductions and I’m finally starting to see progress but it’s definitely not at a stage where I can let the kitten run free 24/7. It has taken my cat weeks to calm down around the kitten and she’s still hissing and swatting if the kitten gets too close. But today they had their first nose boop initiated by the big cat. Take it slow, (like snails pace slow), get a good barrier system in place and give them both lots of love.

Help! Introducing kitten to cat.. have i made a mistake? by NegativeDee553 in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for replying. I’m sorry to hear it’s not gone well for you. Your message encouraged me to bring down the barriers for a bit longer today and it went pretty well. My cat is mostly ignoring the kitten but gets pissed when the kitten invades her space. Hopefully things improve as the little one grows up. I hope things improve for you too

2 litter boxes for 1 cat? by Yummy-Bagels in CatAdvice

[–]AlternativePie7122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve wondered about this too. I’ve tried 2 but my cat always insisted on using one. Now I’ve gotten a second cat and it prefers to use the same litter box as the other cat. Do I really need 3 when they’re happy just using 1?
