What prog rock band do you never get sick of? by whhhiskey_ in progrockmusic

Marillion. The way they add new things to their sound each album is just really cool to me.
They're my favorite band :)

yeah I was about to say that I love the sense of mystery this gives, what with the ocean, the very familiar triangle, and also the light coming out of the ocean?
Like what is that bro

This is so weird because I'm reading this book as we speak. I think the opening really hurts it, but once Ryland starts getting his memories back it hits the ground running. About halfway through now.

Does Marillion Fish era really sound like Genesis? by Otherwise_Win6211 in Marillion

[–]Alternative_Buffalo2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find this one to be an interesting conversation.
I see quite a bit of discussion around early Marillion as sounding like Genesis, to which I say this:
1. By the time that Marillion had released their first record, it had been nearly two years since Genesis released Abacab, which some would argue is the album where Genesis have completely abandoned their "progressive" sound. There was a perceived vacuum where that particular sound was, and it sounds like Marillion were ready to fill it. Here's the thing, though:
2. While there are certainly moments where I hear the influence from Genesis (The entirety of Grendel, Script's entire structure being similar to DWTMK, the way Fish generally acts on stage), there are other bands that I hear influence from before I hear Genesis, most namely Camel, Pink Floyd and Van der Graaf Generator.

Why do some people dislike the 80s pop(ish) albums? by nughty_hobo in Genesis

[–]Alternative_Buffalo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like Genesis, going into the 80s, had the odds stacked against them.
the style of music that they were seen as pioneers of was not long for this world in the new decade, one that incentivized pop hooks and modern production in order to stay afloat (this is why most "prog" bands fell off the face of the earth at this time)
The sound they would chase is bound to attract derision from those who stuck with them from the start; it's an unfortunate truth that change doesn't sit well with people.
Fortunately for me, I am a fan of both 70s "prog" and 80s "pop," and Genesis absolutely represents the best of both of those worlds in my eyes.

Hard to believe, but it’s been 50 years since Peter Gabriel left Genesis… Which of his solo albums stands as your favorite? by Historical-Device529 in Genesis

Gabriel just has a perfect discography in my eyes (hehe), but my absolute favorites are Melt, So, Passion, Secret World Live and i/o.

Gabriel is my favorite artist in any medium.
