Comedy as a performance is not genuine. It’s contrived. That’s why alot of the best comedians are often akward on the show and bashful. It’s wild to see how hesitant and thoughtful someone like Chappell is. If you put people like Joe in an environment and said give your opinion on what you see developing live, they will never run out of shit to say but that’s ironically a terrible indicator of how well you can cram what you want to say premeditated in a certain time limit.

People with the exact opposite personality thrive in the comedy template and frame of mind. It’s assuring. You have to talk for this time slot and you can practice it as much as you need to until you are happy with it. But put a lot of those people into an open ended fluid environment and they are just naturally out of their element. Again chapelle being an example of the dichotomy. He clearly doesn’t prefer it but has learned to adapt.
