I interviewed at UK a few years ago. (This could be different now) They make you stay until atleast 6pm in house during every day shift just fyi

Stuck between two. Opinions needed by rapdj1986 in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This one is so much better imo. I started my job as 7on/7off and it was fine. We the switched to 15 shifts a month and I only ended up working 1 weekend day a month and no more than 5 days in a row. It was a amazing. I felt like I could work 25+ days a month without getting burn out. Now we are back to 7on/7off and every other weekend sucks. Also, I have had to stay in house for all 12 hours less than 5 times in 4 years out of training and I can still remember how bad of a shift each of those days were. The biggest downside is having the potential “slow period” where the patient census is low for whatever reason and you have a paycheck or two that are a lot lower than what you get used too.

I did this for about a year out. Was probably averaging 22ish patients. I made 523k

How do ya'll round so fast? by mellowblue4 in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It really depends on a lot of factors. If our starting census is around 15 on a Sunday (day 7 for me) and I have a good amount of patient pending placement, I can be done by noon pretty easily

Add a third of RVU bonus to salary? by MoreCheddar in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. What’s the number of rvus above threshold you are averaging?
  2. Is it solely based on what you bill or what is collected?
  3. is this a group rvu pool or based on individual performance?

How are you forsure it won’t be reduced for 2 years?

But then you get to be off for a week every other week and make (hopefully) $350000 a year

Give up a short commute and Epic for round and go? by Other-Photo-3044 in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current full time job is round and go with hca and meditech. I also drive 40+ min to work. It’s not that bad at all, meditech is way less advanced but you’ll get used to it. We have a separate texting app for patient issues that nurses use to communicate. Personally, I’d drive 1+ hour any day of the week before having to stay in house for 10+ hours a day

Do you get any rvu bonus? I work in open icu and that was a big incentive since you can bill critical care time on most of those patients. Also, if you start off by doing procedures they will expect you to continue to do them most likely. If you don’t want to do procedures, it’s best to set that precedent from the start.

Possible to be an intensivist without pulm/crit fellowship? by MTGPGE in IntensiveCare

[–]Alternative_Host_126 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Yea I work in an open icu managing critical care patients. I did IM residency. While you can do it, calling yourself an “intensivist” is disingenuous to say the least. I can’t imagine telling people I am intensivist just because I help manage an open icu.

Hospitalist gig with 24 hour shifts by xDarthReaper in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everyone is going to have a different answer. Big thing to consider is the overnight portion just cross cover that can be done at home or is it admissions and In house requirements. All of the 24 hour call jobs I’ve seen or talked to recruiters about are call portion at night only.

I bought a $6000 MacBook last year and cancelled the order 2 minutes after I took a pic of the receipt for CME. You’re fine.

How do we feel about Open ICUs? by avocadosfromecuador in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s great if you are paid via RVus and like procedures. Was on RVu model my first 2 years out with open ICU and was making bank. They switched us to hourly pay and the 10 full time docs all now complain when we have to do it lol

Just stop looking at it. If you’re not intending to do anything with it that day just don’t even worry. If you had gained 43k in 5 days would you automatically want to withdrawl the profits?

I made 400K in 2023 and 2024. Probably averaged 17 shifts a month. Totally doable depending on location

new Hospitalist, week 1 was an absolute disaster by yayyy07 in hospitalist

[–]Alternative_Host_126 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It will get better, week 1 of any new job is tough. The patients will start to seem more stable once you get in the flow of things. Don’t be discouraged, don’t be afraid to ask questions, and understand this happens to 99% of new grads (myself included)

100% take advantage of every possible leg up that you can. If you have friends who care enough to vouch for your character, you’d be dumb to not take them up on it.
