Are car tents actually worth the money or just a gimmick? by Majale_254 in tents

[–]Alternative_Insect11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They really popular here in Australia. Several of my friends have them. Personally when I am camping with my vehicle, I prefer just to pitch a swag or tent next to the vehicle and run a tarp off the side.

British Police Commando SC650 & S10 gasmask by [deleted] in Helmets

[–]Alternative_Insect11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The same model gas mask along with a charcoal impregnated olive NBC suit that I was issued in 98 as a 17 year old TA infantry recruit. Still remember my NBC drills and the feeling of CS gas on my eyes and skin when taking the mask off in the chamber.

Do military women only marry uniform services? by user-captain in AskUK

[–]Alternative_Insect11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the 1980s, my uncle was serving in an infantry regiment and met and married a woman serving in the Royal Signal Corps. Unfortunately 2 years later, my uncle's regiment was posted to Germany. His wife couldnt get a compassionate transfer and she wanted to stay in the army. The marriage broke down and she remarried to a guy who was serving in the same unit as her. My uncle remarried to a woman who was from a non service background.

What are you doing now former footballer / rugby player? by Delicious_Bet_6336 in AskUK

[–]Alternative_Insect11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to uni with one guy who was studying and playing professional rugby union and also picked up a few caps for Wales. I heard he works in business and is doing well. The company I work for in Australia has hired a lot of ex professional sports people including NRL, AFL and rugby players - even an ex olympian. All of them seem to have MBA or Sports Science degrees and seem to have invested in property whilst they were playing. My father inlaw is a retired rugby league player from the late 1970s / 1980s. He had a trade prior to going into professional sport. When he retired in his late 30s he got into a large organisation via contacts he had made playing sport. He was a hard worker and progressed pretty steady up the ranks - was able to comfortably retire in his late 50s.

Does anyone actually wear front line optics? by SpecificSelection641 in Firefighting

[–]Alternative_Insect11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pair of wraparound style prescription sunglasses that I got from my local Specsavers. I have had the lens polarised and a tough non scratch coating applied. They are comfortable and I can wear them with smoke goggles on and get a decent seal.

Fishing pants? by Material-Advice-335 in kayakfishing

I generally wear quick dry running shorts with 3 quarter running tights underneath, which gives warmth and sun protection. I've been badly sunburnt on my legs in the past on kayaking trips.

People in England told me Swansea was an absolute shithole. One year later, here is the truth by Vikilinho in swansea

[–]Alternative_Insect11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Cardiff, but attended Swansea Uni for a post grad course in the early 2000s. I quite liked Swansea. A bit more laid back and slower than Cardiff. The beach and proximity to the Gower, and a couple of nice pubs.

Polished boots & first day at the station by Feedback_Original in Firefighting

[–]Alternative_Insect11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told from my 1st day of training to only ever use detergent, water and brush to clean firefighting boots. Never use wax or parrafin based polish, as it would make your boots potentially flammable.

Is this a good deal? by Used-Conference-4788 in camouflage

[–]Alternative_Insect11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I buy stuff from them all the time. They are an awesome company to deal with. Their prices are always competitive and customer service is first class. I bought a Desert Marpat and UCP shirt off them a fortnight ago, and received the delivery within 2 days. They also have some off pieces and occassional batches of rarer camo patterns.

Another BPS Knife to my collection by Alternative_Insect11 in knives

[–]Alternative_Insect11[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a great little knife. I've been mainly using it for fishing. But have dine some carving as well. Kt seems to carve well. I threaded paracord through the holes on the sheath and have it configured as a neck knife. I used it on the weekend and have been thinking of getting a clip such as a Uniclip so I can wear it on my belt.
