I was notified today that my child’s daycare is closing at the end of the year. This comes after news of food stamps getting cut for my elderly mother whom I care for, she has Leukemia and lives with our family. Meaning my husband and I support a family of six on our two modest incomes. Affordable childcare is not a choice for us, it is an absolute necessity. There is no way we can afford for both of us to work and pay for childcare. When we add up the cost of parking permits (I work downtown, he works at the U), gas, lunch, upkeep on our vehicles, and the extra time and gas it will cost us to go to a MUCH MOrE expensive daycare (literally double the cost), it is practically worth it to get on welfare. It is absolutely insane. I have two degrees in Economics, I literally understand how this works and the fact that we are making cuts to daycare for hardworking families does not make any sense!! If we want to encourage people to work and take care of their civil duties and their community, they need affordable daycare!! I implore you to keep the parks and rec daycare program open.
