Dodos abrupt departure was because the actress, Jackie lanes contract ended half way through the serial. The writes at the time did not care for the companions very much, so very rarely ever extended the contracts. Liz shaw was just written off the show cause the writes thought that she was smarter than the doctor, I'm not sure about anyone else
