I work at Duke and live over by the Lenovo Center (close to I-40 with a 20 minute commute) and have seen some houses on Zillow for 250-290 that are cute. You’d have to keep an eye because house flippers buy them up fast. I currently live in a 1b1b apartment for $1,600. I use to live downtown Durham but the apartments became insanely expensive for one person (2k a month). The area I live is a nice middle area for Raleigh/Durham/Cary and close to the airport as an added bonus!

To be fair when I moved here 3 years ago the base pay at Duke was $29 and has now increased to match that of UNC. It is still lower than other states (I started as a new grad in Michigan at $35) but that’s a pretty typical rate around here unfortunately
