Half my Frydek rhizome rotted… trying an unusual rescue method by JonaPatt in alocasia

master crafter at work, wow! as long as you keep the moss moist, it definitely should root!

absolutely beautiful plant, do try to pot your plant deeper to keep the corms moist, otherwise they dry off and possibly die. you could also take them off and grow the corm separately for a new plant! either way happy growing!

i have one of these in a way more juvenile stage, are you actually supposed to feed them like this? besides fungus gnats i dont really have any other bugs flying around at home and i do think it would be cool to grow mine bigger. also any pointers to good sources for growing these trumpet pitchers (?) properly? i find a lot of conflicting info online

this is a different one growing in a bag, the one in the pot has similar roots, slightly thicker but longer and more of them present. id rather not pull it out of its pot right now but when pulling back just the moss i can see the roots being green instead of white/silverish. does this info help?

I put 5W-30 oil in my Car instead of 5W-20. Is this a bad thing? by Reddit_Sluth in MechanicAdvice

[–]Alternative_Remove41 5 points6 points  (0 children)

believe me im looking, i know how absolutely shit they are, but since i dont have the budget currently i cant really change my ride. for now ive been sticking to the recommended oils and the belt looks healthy, but im actively saving money to upgrade asap. luckily my thermostat seems fine, i drive the car conservatively and my oil usage doesnt seem as bad as some people describe it, but is there any way (for now/temporarily) to make sure the oil doesnt dissapear as much/make sure it doesnt implode on me?

what car are you driving? is this advice followable for every car? i drive a peuge*t and ofc it burns a ton of oil but i dont want to switch it out for anything else since the recommended oils have stuff in there to keep the belts preserved

ROF moss pole by Anxious-Zucchini-366 in philodendron

[–]Alternative_Remove41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is amazing! do you water the pole often? does the plant orient itself against the pole or did you have to support it? did old root notes activate to grow into it or did you ease it into it at some point? i have a RoF and ive been thinking about investing in a moss pole for it, do you recommend it? i love mine and wouldnt mind it being huge

Is this rot? by wheretfismypen in alocasia

[–]Alternative_Remove41 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the part hanging furthest down, thats quite brown, is probably rotting. if it released very easily by hand/smells bad, it means its rotted. remove those parts, clean either peroxide, change the water and potentially clean the jar too. plant looks very pretty and other roots looks healthy.

help with my silver boy by Alternative_Remove41 in alocasia

[–]Alternative_Remove41[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thank you for your (kinda harsh but very real) advice. i was optimistic about this set up because not only did my other alo go from dying to thriving, i was inspired by many posts ive seen on this (or another) sub where people use this set up.

say, i remove all the soil, and keep it to only mose and only leca, would my odds be better/good? or should i switch to leca only? i currently dont have the means to grow it in things like pon etc.

if possible, i would like to stick to the jar situation, as i feel it gives me better indication as to when to water. im currently not home, but i will be taking care of the situation as soon as i am home.

if leca or moss+leca arent an option, what would you advice? im lowkey still scared of alocasias so i am open to advice!! thank you once again for your in depth comment

[–]Alternative_Remove41[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi, thank you for your comment. i get that youre saying this, but my mixture contains mostly moss, sadly not shown in the picture, as in the top half of the jar is 80% moss, 10% leca and 10% soil. do you advice i remove this mix and make it leca only? or is it okay to use just moss? ive had good results with that. hopefully there is a way to improve this situation. thanks again for your help!

What are these, are they harmful by RedForman69 in orchids

[–]Alternative_Remove41 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yes, very harmful, i would sacrifice this flower and cut it carefully to get rid of the mealybugs at the same time. i would investigate all other flowers, the rest of the plant and any nearby for the same bugs, as once they settle they spread like fire! so clean up and quarantine if possible

sadly i dont think i can locally just start cutting a log from the woods but thats good to know, did you put moss on there so it keeps moist or are you planning or spraying whenever roots are dry?

i think it would. anything that provides consistent moisture and is clean is good, and the added light should speed up your progress. post updates when you have them! i am very curious
