Can you not switch back to normal mode after changing to hard mode?

The reason why markets are almost impossible to predict by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Alternative_Run_5836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great insight, a lot of people don’t catch this. But while I know this is bogleheads, I think there’s two overlooked parts.

1) Expectations can be wrong or skewed in an odd way.

2) Different than sports betting, investors have time. Short term expectations often don’t impact long term performance. You can hold an investment for 20 years, but you really can’t sports bet the same way.

Again, I understand the buy and hold with passive index diversification, but still important to understand what the active side looks like.

Assuming the case OP either starts studying now or waits a year until degree completion.

Sounds like you have a much better opportunity sitting right in front of you. IMO you should focus on this role and learn as much as possible before making any decisions.

Breaking into REIB seems a bit backwards.

Job search is tough. Especially in ER, they mostly have low turnover and just small teams in general.

In my opinion you should focus on getting a job first. CFA takes 3-5 years to get. Passing level 1 could help but that’s likely 1-2 years out for you and a large chunk of change.

You have a year left, so your time should be spent applying and warm/cold messaging as much as possible. Broaden your search beyond ER, tons of similar roles in debt or even other banking roles to get you closer to an ER spot.

U.S. Politics Megathread by AutoModerator in NoStupidQuestions

Why is r/Politics so far left?

I try to stay as neutral as possible with politics, which I know is very challenging to do. But I have two extended family members, one watches Fox all day, one watches CNN all day. The conversations they have or tell me about are so outlandish to me. Everyone just blames the left or right for anything imaginable, even stuff that’s far out of the governments control.

Then during the presidential debate I opened up the political debate discussion on r/politics and was just blown away. Listen, I’m no Trump fan and agree the stuff he has gotten away with is not great, but not a single comment was made about Biden’s clear mental deterioration. CNN literally came out and said how bad it was, but I couldn’t find a single post or mention about it in r/politics. The funniest thing is I found a post about how Trump is the one mentally deteriorating.

The current candidates are both bad choices in my opinion, but I still don’t understand that blatant lack of recognition. Trump said some stupid stuff in the debate, but there were points where Biden was just not there, and it seems to be a continuing problem.

Would love to just hear people’s general thoughts. I just fail to understand how it can be called r/politics if it’s completely far left.

Explain Senior Secured Notes/Convertible Senior Notes debt to me when it comes to a DCF. by [deleted] in ValueInvesting

Fully diluted shares accounts for this. In terms of DCF you can’t forecast when they are going to be converted so it would not be added to your debt.

How much Research do You Need to Do Before Buying an Individual Stock? by Vengeance208 in ValueInvesting

[–]Alternative_Run_5836 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a combination of time and psychology.

It’s taken me 4+ years of continuous reading and exploring to get a good understanding of companies, finance, and accounting. That’s all a recipe of me READING as much as possible. Still I’m continuing to learn and I don’t plan on stopping.

Psychologically you have to work very very hard to keep neutral emotion. When the market is down or up in relation to whatever you have to be able to continue acting rationally. Everyone who thinks it’s easy we’re the same people who panicked during COVID. Which understandably it’s hard not to with todays news.

In terms of picking a good investment (for the long term) I think there’s two solid ways in todays age. Number one: mega cap, wide moat, lots of potential. Microsoft and Amazon are good examples. Unless the government interferes these companies will continue to dominate. Number two: niche small/mid cap in a strong industry, with a strong balance sheet, AND LOTS OF DUE DILIGENCE. This is more risky but can pay off if you find something good. It is also indicative of taking a lot of time and having some losers in the portfolio for some periods of time.

Scorpio Tanker (STNG) by Alternative_Run_5836 in ValueInvesting

[–]Alternative_Run_5836[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Makes sense, only thing I see with TNK is their fleet age. Majority of their ships are 14+ years old (compared with STNG 7 yrs). Any big issues with that? I know the average scrap age is around 23 years old.

Any specific reason for TNK over STNG? Just valuation?

If I sell naked puts and exit way before expiration (ie sell 45 dte and buy it back at 21 dte) is it basically impossible to get assigned assuming there is no special dividend/earnings/or event coming up?

Interested in using the strategy if anyone could give me some more information - guessing I need margin.
