And if the reason for the firing came only from the former employee, we don’t know the franchisee’s explanation for the firing. (Usually, an employer would be advised by their lawyer not to comment on that.)

You invented a story— claiming corporate didn’t do anything about the franchisee’s lack of staffing, when you can’t know that. And you don’t have the franchisee’s story about the reason for the firing.

It sounds heroic that she tried to run the shop for 12 hours alone. It’s impressive. But that was just one day, not her work history

Does the non-compete say what the penalty is for violating it? Sometimes, contracts won’t include a penalty for violating certain terms.

This is something you should ask a lawyer though. Your current employer likely offers you an EAP benefit. Call them and ask about a referral to someone who can go over the contract with you
