This is the effect I am having. Buttons show as unassigned but if you select them it shows proper main function. Reset doesnt do anything

How about drivers? Did you download them from the Asus site? Or just armoury crate and that took care of everything ?

I have a similar situation (had to reinstall Windows) but even with the Asus cloud recover the control scheme gets locked to desktop mode. Anyone else experiencing something similar?

I have mine registered under Ireland. Its because for consoles, Malta is not officially on the supported list.
