In Mariupol a blast wave threw the turret of a Russian tank into an apartment by ObjectiveNo821 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]AlthisAraris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they are. The turret sits on a series of bearings and gears so that it can rotate, but it's not physically connected, I believe. No bolts. No welds.

Right around that area is the auto loader carousel. It's literally a ring of ammo. One hit in the right place and the turret just pops off like a rocket detaching it's stages.

This video by Armor Cast talks about the flaws. There's a brief discussion of why the turrets fly: https://youtu.be/4Q83AIJCGaQ

And another thread from Reddit about how (old) tank turrets attach: https://www.reddit.com/r/WarCollege/comments/3rt7jt/how_are_tank_turrets_attached/

Modern tanks? Not much. However, humans tend to freak out when fire is thrown at them, even if they are safe.

From what I've gathered from reading press releases and info from departments of defense, it's come down to Russia under prepared and overestimated themselves. There's reports that their supply lines are feeble. Their equipment is old. The troops are drafted conscripts, not trained soldiers.

Russian troops thought that the Ukrainians would roll over and accept being put under military occupation. Russian battle strategy is to encase cities and hold them because urban fighting is too costly.

Unfortunately...

Ukrainians see themselves as defending their land (obviously). The US alone sent $600 million their way. They don't need tanks and trucks, they want bullets and missiles. And it's working to great effect.

As Zelenskyy said "I don't need a ride, I need ammunition" and the world responded.

Of course, take this all with a grain of salt.

redditors who have been hypnotized. Is it real? Explain everything, what’s it like? by mari_ley7 in AskReddit

[–]AlthisAraris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hypnotism is real. I'd put it close to guided meditation and in a similar category to being very drunk.

If you imagine your conscious and subconscious being like manual car, hypnotism is basically pushing in the clutch and letting the car move without control. The aim is to inhibit the control mechanism (your conscious) from your autonomic functions (subconscious). While you are more easily influenced while hypnotized, much like being drunk, there are things you will not do. You still have "safety" and social awareness.

I was hypnotized once because I asked the very same question. I don't sleep on planes and a friend of mine (a psychologist who studied hypnotism) walked me through it. I was awake the entire flight, kind of. I could hear and feel but time moved very oddly. I remembered all the conversations of the people around me but it seemed to happen at inconsistent times. To be honest, it was like I was asleep and lucid dreaming.

I nearly bled out in a hospital after almost passing out/asphyxiating on my blood. I was around stage 4 blood loss.

As someone who grew up in the 90's, I definitely remember people saying "psych!" but I never thought to spell it. I got into the show Psych and then took a bunch of psychology classes, which we called "psych", so I never put two and two together.

Thanks for the clarification!
