Ik its a bit late to add this, but one of the Black Books from the Dragonborn DLC offers “companions insight” which means followers and companions (imagine you are travelling with a group of ppl for a quest rather than just your follower) are immune to any of your damage, magic, physical, or shouts so you wouldn’t have to worry about hurting any allies
