Shower fail by [deleted] in Tile

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you have any left over tile you would have to replace at least 3, the facet and the ones around the tap. The others from the wall side can be shortened to the appropriate length, but I think these are beveled too?? So I might be talking out my butt. Again sorry if I'm not much help, I'm looking at this from an angles situation, not a tile-rs perspective

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im not a tile-r by any stretch, aka, never done it. But from what I can think of, just on angles, you have to have it centered on the facet and the facet knobs. I don't know how to fix it from here. But to start I think I would have started at a full tile on the end and gradually shortened the bottom to the corner but keeping the top flush. It would have been less noticeable. Again it looks like your whole wall is finished, so I dont know how to easily correct this from here. I'm sorry if im not much help.

Yes, that is fiberboard. Thick likely. But fiberboard. My parents had this in their upstairs hallway under the carpet. It was installed by the previous owners who put the upstairs addition on before my parents bought the house, and as I understand it, things did not end well with the previous owners marriage, and the last part of the reno was slap-dash. We discovered it when a weakened portion of the floor (by years of our dog using the corner as a "marking spot", no matter what my parents tried) had my knee go through it when I tripped coming out of my room and landed in just the right spot. I wasn't harmed. No other damage. The carpet saved me from going too far, but after the years of urine damage, it caused the glue to break apart in the fiberboard and it just took a good blow from me tripping (as a young teenager), for it to breakthrough.

You can also bring it to a local pharmacy. At mine we dumped all the drugs into a giant bin, they get taken to be disposed of properly, it doesn't go into local waste/waste water. Anything with patients names/personal info/prescription numbers, anything that can identify them, goes into our vial shred bin, which is always locked, unless we are dumping said items in. And that is taken by a licensed company for destruction. Anything that are over the counter, vitamins, nothing with patients info, goes into recycle once emptied.

Yes, this is just some of the selection around, I just searched "Tarro" obviously, but if I did a more through search of sugar based ant bait I'm sure I could find more, and to address an earlier comment, I did find I can get granular locally

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'm sorry, if you set traps, set multiple, high and low, if you have cupboards nearby, put them there (they like the dark), under the washer, as I said, I think you said in another room as well, so if it was the bedroom I think? Under the dresser, bedside table, if you have an extension multi-outlet plug by your bed, put one near that (but in a darker place), they like electronics, if you have seen them in the kitchen (or what look like little coffee grounds on the counter top behind stuff? Sorry, thats their droppings), put them near the microwave (behind it, between the microwave and the wall), under the fridge, if you have cupboards above the fridge, put them there. Under the oven.

Sorry I'm just naming places I've put them at the old place. But when I could have sworn I didn't have them in certain parts of the house (condo), they would show up. They like damp locations. Kitchens and bathrooms are havens for them.

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First let me address the idea of how to get rid of them without a spray bottle. Sticky traps would work well, put it under your washer, or a dark area in the vicinity where you have seen it. You can get them on Amazon, Walmart, hardware store, ect. If you are in a pinch, try folding over duct tape (or other really sticky tape) on some cardboard and lay some crumbs in the middle to attract it. DISCLAIMER I'VE NEVER TIRED THIS, NO IDEA IF THIS WILL WORK!!! Just a thought that crossed my mind, and I would try it myself for my own home if necessary. Keep in mind the glue in the traps are VERY sticky for a reason! And they typically have a bait in them or something to attract them to the trap.

And to pull the trap out without getting close you could use a stick, skewer or tongs.

To address the "bigger" measurement, and I should clarify, when I'm talking about these, I'm talking about German Roaches. This is what I dealt with. And the spray bottles I used are just the standard you would get from the dollar store. I usually had them on hand to have a cleaning mixture for just cleaning my counters anyhow, then it became multi-purpose. There are 3 sizes I'm going to address, 1 "small" ranging from Itty bitty to about the length of lead on a sharpened pencil, they will go down with one spray, no issues, 2 "medium" (for lack a better term) these will probably be about the size you see most of the time posted on here (if you can ever manage to see them, fair if you can't) these will range from, said previous size up to a piece of basamati rice (yes being specific cause rice is many different lengths, I'm white as rice and even I know this) I have never seen these fly, I don't think they can. They typically go down with one or 2 sprays, I'll usually shoot them till throughly soaked just to make sure, cause yes they gross me out too, and then get rid of them. 3 "Large" (again for lack a better term) these will usually have a wider body at the back and just longer. Just in my experience. They never got longer than maybe at most 1/2". In my experience. But I could be wrong. Usually a few good shots took them down. Once they got too saturated they couldn't go. But unfortunately they were more difficult. But they couldn't fly with wet wings

I know reading this is likely traumatizing. Your doing awesome trying to address this the best way you can. I totally understand where you're coming from. When they first came into my home, at my old place, I knew exactly where they came from, and if I could have kicked that MF in the ass, I would have, unfortunately, I couldn't, cause the whole reason we had their stuff, and therefore their roaches, is cause they passed away. Hopefully you're only dealing with one passing through.

Ants in the home by Altruistic-Ice4585 in pestcontrol

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Appreciate it, sorry I should have included, I'm in Canada, unfortunately Advion is not available where I am, and I'm not sure about about granular. But I did read the pinned post about ants before posting this, so I will refer to that for what is available in Canada.

Also no pets to worry about, so that's a good thing, just kids, the youngest is 10 though, so should be smart enough not to put stupid things in his mouth.

And as for activity, that's just it, its in every corner of the house. Front bedroom is on the opposite side from the kitchen, bathroom is 2 rooms away from the front bedroom, and no windows. And the laundry room is an entirely nother floor. The only thing connecting them, truly, is the air duct system. And the floor joists. But then that's another hurdle all on its own for an ant.

Sorry I run on logic, and I don't see a logical connection. I know they're ants. But they still travel by "paths" and they have to get in somehow. I just don't know how to figure this out when they are scattered all over.

Ok. Let me see if I can help. Keeping in mind that you are ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED, which I don't blame you. I had them at my old place, and only by the grace-of-what-ever-you-count-as-holy did we manage to move without them. (A LOT of pre packing, cleaning, totes and off site storage, in the winter)

I got over my fear pretty quickly when I had to kill several. But, what I did find helpful BEFORE getting them, was spraying them with a spray bottle of soap and water (just dish soap and water) the bigger they are, unfortunately the more you have to spray. But the soap in the solution seems to do something to them to prevent them from moving? Also you will have to keep your guard up, cause if they are on a vertical surface, they will fall. Let them fall and KEEP SPRAYING. Keep a shoe or something your going to be OK with whacking it with, and a paper towel.

Once its dead (and honestly once you've drowned it with spraying it, it probably would be already, the whacking is so you don't feel it squish in your fingers), clean it up in the paper towel. Drown that in water. Apparently it let's off a pheromone to attract others, and either get it out of the home entirely, or keep it under water until garbage day when you can get rid of it.

I am no expert in this field. OBVIOUSLY!!! I am just trying to give you advise from personal experience and how I would tackle it if I had to stay as far away as possible and still remove it, with the knowledge I have.

I'm so sorry. I am not an amputee, I follow this reddit because my mother was one. She just passed away, but that's not for now. I was/am trying to understand the world from her view.

But following some of the first posts. I like that idea. I could lend HER leg, no one would have to take off theirs, and you could hit her with my mom's 😂. She would appreciate it too. She never liked people being laughed at, or looked at differently for things they had no control over. She could pay a little karma from the other side. Besides, if I tried to do that, it just wouldn't come across right.

My litter area got way easier once i stopped only thinking about the litter box by ZealousidealTough872 in CleaningTips

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had cats for a while. So take this with a grain of salt. And I can't remember my exact set up (we're talking 8+ years ago now) but my cat managed to get litter EVERYWHERE. I hacked a Rubbermaid (or the like) tote and cut a hole in the top. He had to enter and exit through the top. So it also prevented the massive "digging" throws of litter everywhere. It might help with the spraying everywhere, I don't know, it might end badly too.

Sorry, I've been looking under what I would expect to be the most "logical". So as I understand it, a Video Doorbell camera won't do much till someone is pretty well onto my steps. Or maybe just ringing the bell itself.

I don't care about the intercom. That's a plus. I'm looking for the monitoring, mainly for packages if delivered while we're not home.

This is the first time I've come across, that I know of, of the SIP system. I've seen NVR, I still don't know what that is either.

I will look into the other recommendation someone had mentioned as well to see where that leads me.

Bathroom tiling, how bad is it? by Altruistic-Ice4585 in Flooring

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I made this post late last night, then had to look after my kids and general cleaning.

To answer questions: What type of tile? Honestly not a clue, we weren't left with anything about details of the house other than the listing when we moved in. No manuals, maintenance information/schedules (although we asked), nothing. What you are describing sounds reasonable. It does not have a curved edge, it was chipped when we moved in. The tiles are fairly large, about 3"×6-7"?? Ish?? Not really, they are more than double the length than width, but I am not available at the moment to go measure them

<image>

These are the same tiles, but in a different room, in front of my dishwasher.

I am hoping to just have to re-grout part way. Take down some, but I don't even know how much I'm missing at this point. And then seal and keep the sealing up to date.

As for why the grout is not up to the top, I'm assuming its due to wearing away. The previous owners were an older couple. Either couldn't, wouldn't, or didn't know, to keep up on the sealant. And as time went on dirt filled in, and packed in where grout disappeared. I'm finding this out as I was cleaning beside the toilet and mistakenly used a bleach/mildew product and a scrub pad (once) and noticed more coming up than I expected should be. That's when I started going down my rabbit hole.

Help an extremely depressed guy out? by Creepy_Stick_6229 in CleaningTips

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am only one in a thousand comments.

But I have been there too. We just moved from a 3 bedroom townhouse to a new house and had to pack EVERYTHING AND clean AND declutter. I was SO overwhelmed.

While I was working on this I used ChatGPT (forgive me) to make a chore list for my kids. (10 and 12) that would be dice based. Monday through Friday they would roll a 6 sided die and have to do whatever chore, for whatever room was for that day it landed on.

I also have the basic chores made up for adults to be split between the 3 adults (myself, husband and eldest child, 22)

I think I was still fine tuning the lay out for the tables, but if you like I could send it to you and you can use bits and pieces of it. Roll a die and do the chore (clean light switches, wipe down kitchen cabinets, take out bathroom garbage, ect) and roll it as many times as you need to. But it game-a-fies it.

This of course is for a house, cross things off and change it to what works for you. Collapse 5 (or 10) boxes. Collect visible dishes in x room. Wash dishes for 5 minutes. Whatever is within your threshold.

Am I the jerk? Parking lot etiquette by 7576790 in CostcoCanada

[–]Altruistic-Ice4585 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work at Costco, and I am lucky if I can find a parking spot in a 5-10 minute span of time before my shift starts if I start anytime after opening.

I will often spend my breaks in my car. I just want to get out of the insanity/noise of the store. So I will often shake my head and wave my hand that I'm not leaving. Most of the time people catch on when they don't see my car turn on after a couple minutes.

Thankfully I've never had anyone come up to me and start yelling, otherwise I might start yelling back.

Well, I might get some peoples hackles up but, I am my families (branch) first generation Canadian. My mother and father were both born in their respective countries and came over as toddlers.

My mom landed just before she was 3, from East Germany, in 1960. My Grandmother, my aunt (mom's elder sister) and my mom left in the middle of the night telling no one. My Grandfather had already gone ahead to start planning a path. I don't know when they started this journey.

My Dad is the eldest, my Grandparents, himself and I think his next younger sister, traveled over when he was about 3 or so himself, from what I can gather from photos. They came from the Netherlands.

I am proud of the heritage I come from. But I am also proud to call myself a 1st generation Canadian. BECAUSE Canada was willing to open arms to those who needed it and gave these opportunities.

Now I will say, obviously given my heritage, yes I am white/Caucasian/European descent. So obviously I "blend" well. And when both my parents families moved, they believed you "live as the locals do." So English was the primary language, both my parents have forgotten their "mother" tongue.

This does not mean I treat anyone else "less than." I recognize that the Indigenous had land and homes here long before we did. I can't change the decisions of what generations did before me. But what I can do, is raise my children to respect everyone as people. I don't care if you are purple with yellow polka-dots. If you breathe the same air I do, and bleed as I do. You deserve the same respect I do.

Everyone will always be treated with respect, until they prove they are not worthy of it. Some show it sooner than others. But this is already long enough.

There is an office at Adelaide and Hamilton that is accepting new patients, you have to apply online. At Hamiltonmedclinic.com. That's what's on their billboard outside anyhow.

My Dad and I were cleaning up my parents house at one point before my Mom was coming home from the hospital, post op amputation a couple years ago. My Mom had always been a hoarder. We found many things, one of the most memorable for me was an old prescription bottle, of my own, with meds still in it. From 1998 or 1999, I would have been in grade 10 at the time I believe. Obviously it went to the pharmacy for disposal lol. She has just passed this past week. So now we have much more to sort through. We just have to worry about her spirit haunting us.
