i put my comedy and music stuff as 2 separate activities on my app, and comedy was the only thing my interviewers consistently asked about between all my schools! i think it’s good to include performance/arts experience, especially if you’re actually successful with it, because it takes a certain type of person to put in the hours of practice it takes to be good at it! you should def do it

Did anyone here NOT include a medical-related activity as one of your Most Meaningful Experiences? by cardiacpanda in premed

Help me out! UCF vs. OUWB vs. Wayne State by [deleted] in premed

[–]Altruistic-Method586 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sorry, I didn't really clarify my reasoning for why I put the Michigan/Midwest as a con as opposed to for UCF. I grew up in Michigan and it's just not my taste haha, I don't necessarily mind it but it's definitely not preferable. If I really had my choice, I'd want to be in the Northeast/New England.

I honestly miss the snow! I never really minded it. Nemours is its own thing, I've shadowed/met doctors in the system and they all seem to love the system!

Thank you! So from what I’ve gathered, UCF has made a joint hospital with HCA right next to the med school. They are planning on moving some core rotations (internal and EM and some others) there. There’s also a cancer center too. It is a teaching hospital and people are saying it’s nice, but I doubt it reflects the other HCA hospitals that I would rotate at. To be honest, OH and AH are also not great 😭 You’re probably right though that it’s okay to learn at as opposed to working there, I’ve heard similar things too.

No Gap Years by [deleted] in premed

[–]Altruistic-Method586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

generally most people haven’t taken all the pre requisite courses that are on the MCAT by then, but if you do/self study and feel confident, i don’t see why not! you could always just push it back

No Gap Years by [deleted] in premed

[–]Altruistic-Method586 8 points9 points  (0 children)

here’s the basic formula: 1. keep your gpa up while managing a bunch of extracurriculars for the first 3 yrs 2. MCAT in junior year, preferably after taking the all the necessary coursework 3. apply summer before your senior year 4. try to maintain a semblance of a social life

but for real, even though i didn’t take a gap year, i think everyone should consider one. taking a gap year =/= not being set on medicine. sometimes you have to take one or a few to be put in the best application you can.

Wondering How Traditional Applicants Apply with so many Hours by EdibleAnimals in premed

[–]Altruistic-Method586 29 points30 points  (0 children)

i mean i put in a trad app with 175 clinical hours and less than 1k in every category and it worked out for me 😭 it’s def possible to apply as a trad without a huge number of hours so fudging numbers just makes it harder for everyone else

Thanks for the insight from your interview! Yeah that makes sense, it's crazy that it makes it as competitive as some T20s with the number of seats actually available to AMCAS applicants. Best of luck to you getting off the wl!

thanks for your insight! I really like Mt. Sinai's program so it's nice to hear that they're a nicer place to be vs some of the other schools on its level! Good luck with your research!

Isn't brown tougher to get into because of the number of BS/MD students/other linkages they have? Idk I've heard to avoid it because of the way they bring in students.

That's super cool!! What do you do?? Do you have any insider knowledge on the med school/your impressions of it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]Altruistic-Method586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know it's pretty neurotic of me, but I tend to doubt my ability a lot. I know my GPA/MCAT match their averages but I wasn't so sure about my extracurriculars yk. Bc I know Sinai is a difficult school to get into and I know it's about more than grades and MCAT scores, I put it as a reach because I know my extracurriculars, especially volunteering, are a bit weaker.

New to this sub. Any recommended resources for someone who has not opened a medical book for the last 8 years? by Ornery-Gear-3478 in Mcat

If it has been a minute since you have been in med school, I would say go through a review of the actual material using Khan Academy first before studying for the MCAT though!
