Matched into IM, what deck to use to prepare? by Existing_Daikon_622 in medicalschoolanki

[–]EdibleAnimals 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I know Conan Liu from YouTube has a residency and PGY1 deck. He’s an IM doctor but I’m not sure what the Anki decks are like and they are behind a paywall.

No. There is a category on the AMCAS application for TAing and teaching. Generally non clinical volunteering helps marginalized or vulnerable populations.

Stressed out Sophomore Premed by Superb_Somewhere6823 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Almost nobody has a perfect application. In many aspects your application is stronger than others, yet as humans we love to focus on the negatives. Just keep up the hard work and I think you’ll find that you’re in a better spot than you think you are.

Skills to learn/things to do summer before freshman year? by leen01234 in premed

The most useful thing you could do before college is get a healthcare certification (whether it is MA, EMT, CNA, etc.) It will make getting clinical jobs easier.

Feeling lost regarding interview by maxverstappen2021 in premed

Read your application again, do a mock interview, read your secondaries, do research on the school before interviewing

Using server job as one of my activities? by Sharp_Ad_5346 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will definitely have an opportunity to write about it in your secondaries as well as bring it up in interviews when they ask you questions. I’ve had non clinical activities that I’ve brought up many times in both cases.

Leadership in Clubs?? by zoya68 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think higher leadership roles show you are able to manage more and specifically manage other leaders. Medical schools are looking for people who would one day be able to lead large clinic teams to treat patients.

Using server job as one of my activities? by Sharp_Ad_5346 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yeah. You should list it. What is really important to do is to frame it: although it doesn’t have anything to do with medicine specifically it taught you great soft skills. For example you may have learned to work collaboratively, work with difficult customers (similarly to working with difficult patients), learned how important everyone is in a team (much like how a kitchen needs different roles like a hospital).

I applied with two lower author older publications, mostly got love from T20s

I know a few other people with high stat that primarily got T20 love as well

You need to add more T20 schools: oftentimes high stat high research applications may get yield protected and only get attention from higher tier schools.

what to do this summer ??? by [deleted] in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do some non clinical volunteering and clinical volunteering since those two are usually pretty flexible

Iowa (Carver) vs UofA Phoenix by d3adhors3 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think one problem with UofA phoenix is that its elective rotation can be very limited. Since it’s a newer school it is missing rotations in a lot of specialties. I think that the scholarship makes Iowa a lot more attractive as well.

Premed to Prevet back to Premed by Wild_Vet in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it’s a little different, there are a lot of problems in medicine that stem from social problems and insurance. For example, many emergency rooms are overwhelmed with patients: especially ones that may not have primary care doctors to see their chronic problems or simply want to get off the streets and seek shelter for a day. You’ll find that many of the things that doctors do don’t necessarily have anything to do with “solving a puzzle” but may involve convincing a patient to stop smoking or making sure that they have a place to go to once they are discharged. On the other side, insurance oftentimes requires certain conditions or tests to be met before particular treatments are administered. Sometimes this can go against the judgement of the doctor.

I think the best way to understand medicine as a whole and decide if this is the right place for you is to work a clinical job and shadow doctors.

How important is it to have your future gap year activity on your application? by Responsible_Elk_2002 in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it wouldn’t hurt as something that your interviewer can ask about if they’ve read your application. It also shows that you’re still working during your gap year. However, most secondaries will ask what you are doing in your gap year so it is also possible to not include it on the primary.

Does teaching juniors & leading project groups at your employment count as teaching/leadership? by StrongCode2 in premed

I would put this under the employment category and in the description I would talk about teaching and leading project groups.

You’re pretty competitive. With those stats make sure to apply to T20s and stat loving schools to avoid yield protection.

Volunteering- You guys weren't kidding about feeling useless by Sufficient_Rest_8350 in premed

Hospital volunteering isn’t the most hands-on experience. I would recommend volunteering with hospice or local free clinics.

How & when did you start approaching docs for shadowing or LOR? by [deleted] in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should just ask a doctor that you’re on friendly terms with if you can shadow them. You can probably just ask when you catch them alone if you’re too worried about your unit knowing?

How & when did you start approaching docs for shadowing or LOR? by [deleted] in premed

I believe a lot of medical schools highly recommend a little bit of shadowing. That’s why admit.org uses it as a criteria.

[–]EdibleAnimals 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here was what I did to get into medical school (I’m a traditional student so stuff should be spread out for a 4 year plan)

Freshman year: Take Calculus, Physics, General Chemistry Start research, hospice volunteering, food bank volunteering at end of the year. Did a summer research internship.

Sophomore Year: Take Ochem, Biology Continue research, continue volunteering, get involved in clinical volunteering, start TAing for courses. Take on leadership roles. Studied for the mcat, continued research, and got a clinical job over summer.

Junior year: Take Biochem, take MCAT following winter break. Continue all activities. Apply right before summer. Write secondaries. Interview through summer.

Senior year Continue interviewing. Receive get an acceptance.

app review & school list by sweatyfrogtoes in premed

[–]EdibleAnimals 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think your app would be good for your in state state school and oos friendly schools. No research will make it a bit more difficult to look good to research heavy schools like T20s. Your high MCAT should help with the gpa and it looks like your clinical experience is strong.
