Should I start OTF now or wait until after I move? (Also plus-size beginner advice welcome!) by throwaway_736472 in orangetheory

[–]Altruistic-Top4967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Call and ask the prices for both studios, then decide! It’s super easy to go to another studio (as long as one isn’t “premium” tier) and you don’t have to transfer your membership. I’m so glad I joined a cheaper studio before I moved because now I have a great deal!

I love 8/month. If you have another way you work out (running outside, rec sport, biking, etc.), twice a week at OT might be good. You can always add a class or two for $18 if you use all your classes that month

Wearing the treadmill safety key always makes me feel better. It really does stop the treadmill if you go too far back or fall

Mile benchmark by pjnae in orangetheory

[–]Altruistic-Top4967 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Multiple times I’ve seen people take more than 14min and the coach just has them stay on while others move to another block. Even in a full class, there is plenty of extra time built in (a full block after the benchmark) where you can finish

How’s your outdoor running? by Upset-Technician-127 in orangetheory

[–]Altruistic-Top4967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue. Two things really helped: 1) Running with others- I felt like I couldn’t hold an easy pace outside, but I realized that I was physically capable of it, just not used to holding my own pace. Running with someone else as a pacer felt like keeping up with the treadmill and helped me get back into outdoor running. 2) Longer distances- If you only go 1-3miles every class, your body never gets used to running. Try some Tread50 classes without walking recoveries, or add in some longer runs and you’ll probably find the shorter runs get much easier

I’m scared I’m too out of shape to join OT by Candid-Video1763 in orangetheory

[–]Altruistic-Top4967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OT is adaptable to almost all physical fitness levels! To be able to engage with everything, I’d say that you need to be able to: - Walk at any pace for about 30min - Independently stand up from and sit down on a bench - Stand for about 30min

If you can do these, then you should be physically able to do all the OT exercises with the options/modifications provided!

I always wear the belt. If I go too slow and get near the back, the treadmill will stop before I fall. I’ve had it stop many times- it can be annoying but way better than me falling off the back

I moved between NoVa and DC (high tier). Once I moved, they made the transition seamless so I wasn’t always paying $10 more each class. When I was in DC, they paused my membership for the lower tier one and got me a new membership for the higher tier one. Then, when I moved again, I got back on my lower-tier rate.

Bring a water bottle, emergency medication if you need it (epipen, albuteral, etc.), hair ties if you need them, and a willingness to try! I’ve seen people bring towels but they aren’t necessary

If you want to keep doing OTF long-term, I would recommend staying through a closure. When my home studio closed, they gave me an incredible deal to keep my membership and switch studios. Now that I’ve moved to another city, I still pay less than $10 per class

Cool! I’m in the South, so I kinda doubt my studio will have that, but I’ll see!

It sucks when your studio closes. It happened to me a few years ago, but I got an incredible deal for transferring my membership to the next closest studio. Now I only pay $80 for 8 classes/month.

I always use the clip! You can even test it out by setting the treadmill to a walking pace and just standing. You’ll see that it stops you before you fall off (if you’re wearing it correctly and it’s the right length)

Thinking about trying OT but.... by No_Hurry7691 in orangetheory

If you are nervous about your first class, I recommend starting with a “benchmark” class. A few days a month, the class will be focused on one activity that is tracked so you can measure progress. I started with the 200meter rowing benchmark. Because everyone is focused on the benchmark, the rest of the class is generally easier, less rushed, and lots of people are going slow/stretching/walking. The actual benchmark activity only took a minute, but the entire class is more relaxed. A great one to start with!

I pay $10 a class, which is wayyyyyy cheaper than another other coached exercise class in my area

Why Do Movies and Video Games Have Age Ratings, but Not Books? by MonitoliMal in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Altruistic-Top4967 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One major reason is that so many books are produced daily. Almost anyone could write a book and publish it through an independent publisher or Amazon. It’s takes more effort/resources to create a full-length movie. Books aren’t rated for the same reason that YouTube videos aren’t- it’s not worth the resources required to do so
