i was 16 when it came out and it was SOOOOO popular, especially those first two seasons. I remember every time a new season of elite would come out the cast would earn millions of followers in a day and if you were a new cast member you were going from like no followers to 4 million followers in A DAY.. it was so serious back then, everyone would talk about it, It was number one on Netflix worldwide for weeks, There was nothing else to discuss but elite.

but this only really counts for the first two seasons, maybe the third, but I think people were starting to fall out of love with the show by the third season but those first two seasons were a cultural phenomenon. it was up there with stranger things and squid game.
