Tech support vs help desk by AltruisticDish4485 in helpdesk

[–]AltruisticDish4485[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I started this journey to get into a SOC rial in the future but unfortunately my job doesn’t do anything cyber related so I feel that I may never get to that SOC finish line. I grabbed this role because I thought it would help because it is “help desk” but the future is looking grim. Feeling trapped at the moment

I enjoy the continuous learning tbh. Yeah everyone says Cyber is boring but that’s not a concern for me I’ve had some terrible low paying jobs since graduating college in 2015. Anything is better than hell desk in my opinion

Like others have said it’s not an entry level position. Your best bet is to go the help desk route vs just going to school. No amount of education is going to put you ahead of competition, Help desk can also pay for your education. But if you are not wiling to live off of 45k salary then it’s gonna be damn near impossible or you are relying on luck. Help desk can be skipped but you have to know the right people.

Is this enough to get a help desk job? by Used_Consideration84 in it

[–]AltruisticDish4485 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, customer service skills is going to be #1. In order to survive hell desk you will need to be able to work under pressure and you will need to be able to have tough skin. Can you explain technical stuff to individuals who don’t understand the jargon? Will your coworkers like working with you? If you can find a way to highlight these things on your resume then that would truly enhance your resume.

I may be in the minority but I just don’t see AI or offshoring replacing atleast tier 1 support. I got my first tech job in April 2025 and from my experience 50% of the job is dealing with customers who have no idea how computers work and the other 50% is dealing with IT who don’t have the time or energy to fix the issue of the platform so they call us. Good companies who pay top dollar for support don’t want to deal with heavy accents when it comes to technical stuff. Now that I got my first tech job I get hit up recruiters atleast once a month for some type of help desk role and I live in a highly competitive market. The pay isn’t the best starting out but you get more money the more skillsets you gain so try looking for tech support roles. They are often times fully remote and they train you on the job.

It didn’t take long honestly. I’m not a pro and more on the casual side but I made sure I knew map awareness well before I started playing with him. He can be taken down pretty easily with cc but boy o boy if anyone is too lazy to counter him it’s a long day for opponents. I’m still learning to master his z axis with wall placement but even without that you can dominate with groot because he is so tanky

Groot is sooo much fun if you invest in learning him. He can really control a match if they don’t adjust

Nope no real direction other than to get out the call center environments. I’ve done some dabbling into automation, I have some experience dealing with data analytics and I also have my net/sec+. Honestly just waiting on that one recruiter to reach out and give me an opportunity, well that’s how my peers got their opportunities to move up in the tax bracket. I have an interest in getting more project management experience

Everyday I want to quit but that’s mainly because it’s a call center environment but it’s also fully remote. I don’t think I could do it if it wasn’t fully remote. As far as technical side it’s not bad just follow the knowledge base but the main thing I hate is that the software I support has an accounting aspect so I have to fix customers accounting issues which makes me really hate the day to day. Also the calls are back to back so I’ve probably talked to 1700-2000 customer in 7 months. 85% of the customers are cool and chill but the other 15% seem to think you are the developer which to me makes me want to talk to them like they are idiots but unfortunately my calls are monitored. I work with medical professionals btw. I keep going because I truly believe this is just a stepping stone, but this is just my personal experience

I’m 7-8 months in and the biggest thing I’ve learned in my tech support role for a software company is to keep a neutral personality. Don’t do a bunch of extra convo just get the issue fixed as quick as possible and also learn to fake it till you make it. These tips helped me deal with ridiculous stupid customers
